    SUMMARY PRESENTED BYT-Mobile

Camping options near Wakeman, Ohio concentrate primarily around established campgrounds with a range of accommodations for different outdoor experiences. The area features several developed facilities like Findley State Park Campground in Wellington and Timber Ridge Campgrounds in Amherst, both offering tent sites, RV hookups, and cabin rentals. Most campgrounds in this region provide amenities including electric hookups, water access, showers, and restroom facilities. Seasonal campgrounds such as Indian Trail in New London and Milan Travel Park provide additional options within a 30-minute drive of Wakeman.

Reservations are typically required at developed campgrounds in the area, with many sites accepting bookings well in advance of peak summer months. "This is a great place to camp with family. They have a swimming pool which my grandkids had a blast in and they also have daily activities for kids and adults," noted one visitor about Schaun Acres Campgrounds. The camping season generally runs from April through October, though some facilities like Findley State Park and Timber Ridge remain open year-round. Weather considerations include humid summers and cold winters, making spring and fall particularly pleasant for camping. Most campgrounds provide full hookup options for RVs, including electric, water, and in many cases, sewer connections.

The camping experience near Wakeman emphasizes family-friendly amenities and accessibility rather than remote wilderness. Campgrounds frequently feature swimming pools, fishing ponds, and recreational activities. A visitor to Timber Ridge commented, "It's gorgeous with super large sites. Plenty of space. You're close to your neighbor but doesn't feel like it." Several campgrounds maintain seasonal sites alongside short-term options, creating established camping communities. While primarily designed for vehicle access, many campgrounds offer walk-in tent sites as well. Proximity to attractions like Cedar Point amusement park (approximately 30 minutes from Wakeman) makes these campgrounds popular bases for regional exploration. Cell service is generally reliable throughout the area, with most campgrounds offering WiFi access.

      Money Grubbers

Made a reservation. Canceled since wife had to go into hospital due to an emergency. No flexibility in the 7-day prior window. State parks and others have all been decent to us over this. We paid 3 days for a reservation we never used but canceled 2 days out. The park did not fill up so they took our money over a gotcha clause even after I begged the manager for her understanding. Under the circumstances, I was hoping they would compromise and take only the first night, but they are in it mainly for your money, I'm afraid.

      Kelleys Island State Park Campground

      Island time

Spent a week on a full hook-up site with our Class C! Although it was tough to get a spot, totally worth the $200 ferry ride over. With dogs and kids, the quarter mile walk to the beach (and then East away from the public beach area) was easy peasy and we were able to set up our own little beach area. Even being the second week of July, this area of the beach didn’t have very many people and it was awesome to let the kids and dogs all play. Originally we had planned to rent a golf cart, but when we rode our bike to town, we realized it was such a short ride we didn’t need a golf cart. We utilized bikes to go out to dinner a few times, and even ride around the perimeter of the island. Our full hookup site specifically was not in the shade, but it looked like most full hook ups were. Next time we will consider an electric only down by the beach, as it was easily 10° cooler with a breeze down there. This campground would’ve been five stars, except for the bathhouse was dire need of cleaning. Not sure if this is a result of coming off a holiday weekend, but either way we popped in a few times throughout the week and it was pretty gross.

      East Harbor State Park Campground

      Easy layover

Just staying here one night before moving on. We snagged one of the full hookup sites, B131. It has a nice open grassy area, picnic table, and Firepit with some mature trees, providing plenty of shade for this site. Although lots of campers on top of each other, being an end site gave us more room and privacy. We walked a trail along the water, to the beach. It was a nice well-maintained trail, and only a little over a mile to get to the beach.

      Mohican Wilderness

      Return campers

We return to Mohican wilderness a few times each year and love the sites we choose right on the river.

Most sites here are wide open field sites and would not suite our style of camping.

      Bathrooms are typically clean.

      East Harbor State Park Campground

      Really Nice State Park!

The campground is very nice with clean facilities, activities and nice sites (especially in areas A and B). If you are there in June, expect Mayflies. No big deal, just be prepared. My only negative is the beach could have been a bit cleaner.

      Excellent campground

Friendly staff. Quiet campground sites. Extremely sociable neighbors. Participated in bingo. Has a great lake, fishing catch and release, and can rent a kayak. Nice size pool. Firewood is available. Highly recommend this campground.

      Valley Overlook

      Absolutely Wonderful

Absolutely a great spot for large private heavily wooded sites! Only primitive non electric site for roof top campers is C5! Others are park and walk or to small to open up and be comfy. Great cabins and yurts! Clean bathrooms and showers. Everything here is done online from reservation to buying wood and so Ice so prepare for that.

      Mohican Wilderness

      Great Sites

We come back to MW each year and try to get the same sites (323-322) as they are very private with access to the water while still being super close to the store and walkable to the bathrooms:showers.

We love how peaceful it is and the play areas for kids. We’ll bring kayaks for the river which is cool but the last time it was too cold.

    Guide to Wakeman

    What to do

Hiking trails at Findley State Park: Access over 16 miles of marked woodland paths that accommodate various skill levels. At Findley State Park Campground, visitors can explore extensive trail systems. "Findley state park is well maintained large park! We can easily get lost on 3 mile hikes in the woods and still be on marked paths! The roads are paved and excellent for biking and skating," notes Kimberly C.

Water activities on local lakes: Rent kayaks or canoes for paddling excursions from spring through fall. "Took the kayaks out on the lake and had a great time," shares Linda R. about her experience at Findley State Park. Most water equipment rentals operate between May and September.

Disc golf courses: Play through wooded fairways at several area campgrounds. "They have plenty of hiking trails, disc golf, a playground for the kids, a nature center and gift shop, archery and so much more!" explains Jessica S. about recreational options at Findley State Park.

    What campers like

Spacious campsites with privacy: Many locations offer sites with natural separation between neighbors. At Timber Ridge Campgrounds, "It's gorgeous with super large sites. Plenty of space. You're close to your neighbor but doesn't feel like it," according to Sarah A.

Clean, modern bathroom facilities: Several campgrounds maintain updated shower houses and restrooms. "Shower houses are clean. Canoes and kayaks are available for renting. Many musicians set up camp and would jam out for some live evening music! Everyone was so nice at the campground," reports Kimberly C.

Well-maintained camping areas: Campers appreciate the upkeep of grounds and facilities. At American Wilderness Campground, "Beautiful clean serene park with absolutely stunning beach views at sunset. Also the park has older shower and bathrooms however there always clean and well taken care of every few hours staff cleaning!" according to Andrew V.

    What you should know

Reservation timing: Popular campgrounds require advance booking, especially for summer weekends. "Very nice, comfortable campground, kids loved it. Only downfall is trying to find an open spot for reservations. Place is booked most of the time. If you're planning a holiday weekend you need to book 6 months in advance," advises Jeffrey L. about Findley State Park.

Site surface conditions: Campsites vary from concrete pads to packed dirt surfaces. "Dirt in the campsites is packed super tight, it's hard to drive tent stakes. However, it's flat enough where it isn't really an issue," explains Evan D. regarding his experience at Findley State Park.

Payment methods: Some campgrounds have specific payment requirements. Milan Travel Park accepts credit cards, but others like Timber Ridge have different policies: "Hit up the ATM prior to arriving, as this park is cash / check only," warns Sarah A.

    Tips for camping with families

Swimming options: Multiple campgrounds feature pools or swimming areas for children. At Schaun Acres Campgrounds, "They have a swimming pool which my grandkids had a blast in the poop and they also have daily activities for kids and adults very clean. The grandkids keep asking to go back," shares Beverly.

Recreational activities: Look for campgrounds with dedicated play areas and organized events. "This campground was clean and the staff was friendly. We only stayed one night but had a pretty sight by the pond. The park seemed to be mostly seasonal campers," notes Stacy E. about Timber Ridge Campgrounds.

Accessibility to attractions: Many campgrounds provide convenient access to regional points of interest. "Just 15-20 minutes from Cedar Point which is an easy ride," mentions Tracey S. about Milan Travel Park's location.

    Tips from RVers

Hookup availability: Full-service sites with water, electric, and sewer connections are available at multiple campgrounds. "We stayed in a 29ft Travel Trailer, but sites could handle the largest of rigs," reports The Wandering Shores about Indian Trail Campground.

Pull-through convenience: Several parks offer pull-through sites for easier arrival and departure. "Many level pull through sites. We were just passing through so the ability to not have to unhook was important to us," notes Sue B. about Milan Travel Park.

Seasonal considerations: Some RV-friendly campgrounds remain open year-round, while others have limited seasons. "Clean small campground lots of room to walk. No dog run but plenty of area to walk your dog," explains A H. about Milan Travel Park, which operates from May through November.
