Best Campgrounds near Fremont, OH

Campgrounds near Fremont, Ohio cluster primarily around Lake Erie and its tributaries, with several state parks offering developed camping facilities. East Harbor State Park Campground and White Star Park Campground provide established options within 30 miles of Fremont, featuring a mix of tent sites, RV hookups, and cabin accommodations. The region includes both waterfront camping along Lake Erie's southern shore and inland options with varying levels of amenities. Most established campgrounds maintain electrical hookups, while several parks like Maumee Bay and East Harbor also offer full-service sites with water and sewer connections.

Camping in the Fremont area follows seasonal patterns, with most campgrounds operating from April through October, though several remain open year-round. White Star Park operates from mid-April to mid-November, while South Bass Island State Park maintains a shorter season from April to October. Winter camping options are limited, with only a few facilities like East Harbor State Park and Maumee Bay State Park remaining accessible throughout the year. Reservations are strongly recommended during summer months when Lake Erie destinations experience peak visitation. Many campgrounds require advance booking, particularly for weekend stays and holiday periods. A visitor noted that "even when the campground is full, traffic is very light" due to the cul-de-sac design of camping loops at some parks.

Waterfront camping receives consistently high ratings from visitors, particularly at East Harbor and Maumee Bay State Parks. Campers highlight the spacious sites and natural screening between camping areas that create a sense of privacy despite relatively close spacing. According to one visitor, Maumee Bay offers sites that are "close together which is great for safety, however with the bushes and brush, it feels super private." Island camping on South Bass Island and Kelleys Island provides distinctive experiences with lake views and access to unique geological features. Several reviews mention the quality of bike paths and hiking trails connecting campgrounds to beaches, fishing spots, and other recreational amenities. Families appreciate the playgrounds and organized activities at larger state parks, while those seeking quieter experiences can find more secluded options at smaller facilities like Wooded Acres Campground.

    East Harbor State Park Campground

    Beautiful but Buzzy

I booked one night here for the amenities on a cross-country trip.

The laundry, showers, and water fill stations were convenient/ well-maintained.

    I gave only 4-star however 2 reasons.

    1. for the 5hr lawn mowing caravan that started at 7am in every direction. I’m not even sure what they were mowing since the lawns looked freshly cut. It was obnoxious! And
    2. not enough signage. For example, I had to ask for directions to the laundry rooms and then they are quarter only with no change machine. I had to make a trip back to the office for change.

Overall, a nice spot with all the amenities you could need. Plenty of room and nice multi-use trail to the beach was great!

    Van Buren State Park Campground

    Small and peaceful

We stayed one night on our way to IN. We’ve never been here before and wanted to check it off our list. It’s a small campground with one side as equestrian and the other side not. All sites had electric and water, no full hookup. There were only drop toilets and no showers. They were clean but I don’t think I’d want to do more than a weekend there. It had a nice playground for kids and plenty of trails to hike or go horseback riding. They also had a dog park and small wildflower garden. The check in cabin had ice and wood for sale but no store. Our site was really nice. The pads were recently paved and had a huge bumper at the end. The fire ring was nice and the site had plenty of space for tents.

    Meadow Brook Campground

    Motorcycle Tent Camping

Very friendly staff and clean facilities. Primarily a seasonal camper location but I found many open tent sites on a weekday. Nice grassy spot to pitch the tent, a rare luxury.

    East Harbor State Park Campground

    Nice park

Stayed 2 nights. The bathrooms are decent, laundry facility is good and the sites are a good size. There are trails and beaches in the park. I found a disc golf course in the park, and I really enjoyed the layout’s layout. The main issue is the mosquitoes, on every tee pad I was swarmed by at least 50 mosquitoes. It was by far the most mosquitoes I’ve ever seen in one area. I was warned, so I sprayed before going. It helped, but they still buzzed around your head.

    Findley State Park Campground

    Very nice campground.

Very nice, comfortable campground, kids loved it. Only downfall is trying to find an open spot for reservations. Place is booked most of the time. If you’re planning a holiday weekend you need to book 6 months in advance.

    Meadow Brook Campground

    Meadowbrook Park

Park is clean and tidy. Bathroom was clean. Plenty of hot water. Sites are spacious and level. Manager was extremely helpful. My truck didn't want to start so he grabbed his tractor and put our trailer on site for us. No charge for the dump station. All in all a nice stay. Only draw back is the constant trains right across the street blowing their horns going in and out of town.
