    Maumee Bay State Park Campground

Clean, spacious, fairly private with lots of activity options

We've camped at Maumee Bay State Park twice and enjoyed it both times.  The campground is part of a larger resort complex that includes a hotel, marina, a nice beach on Lake Erie, a second beach on an inland lake, golf course, mowed hiking trails and - our favorite - about 5 miles of beautiful, paved bike paths.  It's all very clean and well maintained.  The whole place has a welcoming, friendly vibe.

We camped on site 47, electric only.  Very level and spacious paved spot with its own shade tree.  Nearby shower house accessible by well-lit paved path.  Our only problem was a bit of water puddling near the camper/fire pit but it went away after the first night.

The campground is spread out so everyone brings bicycles and also saw a few golf carts.  Very nice for family bicycling!  Saw lots of wildlife on our rides.

The surrounding area is kind of industrial.  We toured it the first year we went (very interesting!) but stayed close to camp this year.

    Lighthouse Point at Cedar Point

    Immaculate!

Absolutely beautiful RV park! Gorgeous views of Lake Erie and walking distance to the gate of Cedar Point. Beautiful landscaping and very clean. Staff is incredibly friendly and knowledgeable. Good little camp store with reasonable(ish) prices. Too chilly to swim but the pool looks nice. Bathhouses are updated, clean and very nice, but pretty far from about half of the sites. One section has premium sites with upgraded grills and fire pits and crazy good lake views. The regular sites are still well landscaped and each have a grill and an extra long picnic table, but no fire pit. You can bring your own fire pit if your site doesn't have one. No bikes or golf carts allowed on the grounds, but there are Cedar Point buses available day & night as well as rickshaws during the day. Until now I have held Disney World's Fort Wilderness as the penultimate place for camping but they could learn a few things from Cedar Point! We stayed five nights in a pull through sites, #231. I would love to snag a premium site for our next trip but it may be difficult because they allow you to book up five years in advance!

    East Harbor State Park Campground

    Love this place

A great campground in Ohio. So clean and so many things to do. Campsites are close together but they do honor quiet hours. Great trail around the lake and a fun and challenging disc golf course.

    Kelleys Island State Park Campground

    Best weekend camping

We will definitely be going back! Campground is on the lake and is beautiful! So many things to do! The camp is clean, has a playground, and movie night. Bath house is a typical campground bath house. We had a tent site and it was huge! Sites come with fire pit and picnic table. Beach is within walking distance of campsite.

    Camp Sandusky

    Very nice campgrounds!

There is so much structure and order to this campground! The grounds are laid out so nicely! One big circle with cross roads all along the way. You can camp however you'd like too! They have RV sites, tent sites and cabins. All mixed in together so you can travel with all your favorite campers. They do breakfast every morning in the front pavilion for $4.50 (all you can eat pancakes, 1 sausage and coffee) I haven't tried it yet, but its certainly popular. Laundry is open 24 hours a day and in an open area. Not the biggest fan of that due to needing to do laundry in the rain. Bathrooms are clean and standard. Row of toilet stalls and showers in a separate room. They have a stellar playground area, I don't have kids but even I was drawn to wanting to play on it. Very pet friendly around here. Close to downtown, near Cedar Point and all the other attractions over here. They have 2 pools, one being heated. We haven't had a bad rain storm while we're here but you can tell by the ground of our spot its going to be bad and super muddy. All in all this campground is pretty awesome.

    East Harbor State Park Campground

    Very nice campground

This campground is very large with lots of spots to choose from. The C portion has few trees, but if you choose a spot off one of the south circles, the sites are private. The bathhouse is very clean and well maintained. If you want quiet, it may not be for you because lots of families camp there. Quiet hours were, however, quiet! Trails are wide, grassy, and mowed, great for families who want to walk with children. WiFi is not strong, so don't plan on streaming a movie in the evening. There are plenty of things to do, though. My husband and I had a great time!

    Kelleys Island State Park Campground

    Spoiled Diamond in the Rough

I have been coming up to Kelleys Island for 39yrs and this year really tested my happiness. The campground has gone through quite a bit of changes over the last couple years and it's not entirely for the better. We stayed on the water front site directly next to the trail for the public beach. I do not recommend this site unless you want everyone to walk through the site at any time all day long. People do not respect quiet hours and leave their porch lights on in the cabins that now sit on the water front. There used to be VIPs that cleaned the park everyday and maintained everything. Not anymore and the park seems a little less friendly now. Golf carts are or were prohibited from entering the campground but now drive around the park all day long creating quite the ruckus and disturbing the beauty of nature. The bathrooms did get an upgrade of fixtures and super bright LED lights, but they took out the ADA accessible showers that had detachable shower heads and a bench to sit on in the shower. This beautiful well kept secret feels a lot like it's sister island Put-in-Bay now with all the rules stripped no care for the environment with partying all day. We did however have beautiful weather the entire time we were there. The site was clean but we noticed a lot of trees had been lost over the years and our camper sat in full sun all day long. They have replanted a tree that will cover the parking pad with shade in probably 10 years. The stairs to get to the public beach we decaying railroad ties that need some TLC but work. The dumpstation has moved to back of the campground by the old pet section which is nice and keeps the noise away from the rest of the park. They also stripped the Ranger program and no longer offer education hikes, movie nights, island history hikes, or the nature program. These were all favorites of mine as a child and made me appreciate the island more.

Guide to Fremont

Fremont, Ohio campsites offer access to Lake Erie's southern shore where limestone bedrock creates unique camping terrain. The area experiences warm summers with average highs of 82°F in July and cooler spring and fall seasons that extend the camping season from April through October. Many campgrounds maintain sandy paths through wooded areas that provide natural shade during summer months.

What to do

Birding at wildlife preserves: East Harbor State Park Campground provides excellent birdwatching opportunities throughout its grounds. "I enjoy walking to the pond at night and flashlight frogs... It is a great place for birding, fishing, boating and close to marblehead lighthouse and the ferries," notes Jaclyn B.

Boating and water access: Kelleys Island State Park Campground features multiple water access points for boats and paddlers. "The campground has a little bay which works out great for having a small boat, jet-ski, and also a small swimming area," explains Rebecca F. The park offers direct shoreline access with boat-in campsites.

Biking island roads: Maumee Bay State Park Campground offers extensive riding options. "It is also an amazing place to ride bikes, everything is flat and there are also plenty of bike paths," notes Kayla H. The campground rents bicycles on-site for visitors who arrive without their own.

Winter sports: Some parks remain open year-round with seasonal activities. "I came cross country skiing here in early January and it was absolutely amazing. It is cold but the terrain is simple for first time skiers," writes Kevin T. about Van Buren State Park's winter trails.

What campers like

Spacious sites with privacy: East Harbor State Park Campground offers varying site sizes with good separation. "Site D10 was massive, had a creek running alongside of it. And was hidden behind lots of trees," reports Brendan B. The campground's mature trees provide natural buffers between sites.

Structured amenities: Crystal Rock Campground maintains organized facilities. "Everyone in the office is so polite and courteous, the grounds, office, bathrooms, and showers are spotless, tons of amenities and close to the highway but far enough away for a little hideaway of awesomeness," writes Matt W.

Quiet off-season camping: South Bass Island State Park Campground offers a different experience outside peak times. "Beautiful place, well kept, lots of sites overlooking the lake and a lot of shade. The island is pretty well known as a party island so we generally only camp here off-season now," advises Daniel U.

Island camping atmosphere: Kelleys Island State Park provides a remote island experience. "No city lights and being in the middle of the lake means lots of stars, the sounds of water and being so dark you can barely see. Awesome place to explore," shares Daniel U.

What you should know

Ferry planning required: For island campgrounds, transportation timing matters. "The slow ferry to the island (Miller) is the car ferry and it has free parking if you can leave your vehicle behind on the mainland... If you do take your vehicle over note that the wait time to bring it back on a Sunday while usually 2 to 3 hours can also be up to 6 hours," warns Stephen S. at South Bass Island.

Weekend vs. weekday experience: Island campgrounds have different atmospheres depending on timing. "Mid week during the summer season is the best time for those who aren't into 24 hour partying and weren't able to snag a cliff side camp site," advises Stephen S.

Site selection impacts stay: Crystal Rock Campground requires careful planning. "We were packed in like sardines! Their were tent sites right next to RV sites which From what I've seen isn't usually the norm. There are about 120 or so sites in the lower section of the camp all sharing one bathroom," reports Austin R.

Weather considerations: Lake Erie creates unique camping conditions. "Even in the summer it can get pretty cool in the evening. Also make sure you bring jackets and blankets," advises Kayla H.

Tips for camping with families

Playground facilities: Lighthouse Point at Cedar Point offers family-friendly amenities. "Walk right into the park or swim park! Literally the best way to stay at Cedar Point!!! Very clean campground!" explains Malinda B. The location provides direct access to amusement parks.

Kid-friendly activities: Crystal Rock Campground provides numerous options for children. "Our daughter really loved the sandbox, and the playground was great! We even did a little gem mining! The display for the bag contents were really neat too. Our daughter wanted to stay forever!" shares Crystal J.

Beach access options: Maumee Bay State Park offers multiple swimming areas. "Several lakes are good for fishing or boating... a beautiful and extensive boardwalk constructed by the Ohio Civilian Conservation Corps is available only for foot traffic. Bike rentals are available," notes Lee D.

Yurt camping for families: East Harbor State Park offers alternative accommodations for families seeking yurt camping near Fremont, Ohio. "The key is site selection at East Harbor...we happened to be in section C which was a newer section of the park. Section C was nice, though in hot sunny days there is very little shade to protect you," advises Mark S.

Tips from RVers

Extended-stay benefits: Van Buren State Park Campground offers simple but effective amenities. "All sites are very generous in size and appear to be spaced with a decent amount of space apart with foliage providing varying levels of privacy. Some have beautiful trees that in peak fall color would be stunning. All camper pads are paved and long enough to accommodate large RVs," reports Lee D.

Hookup availability: Lighthouse Point provides premium services. "Concrete pads. Level! Full hookups were simple to use. The pool area was super clean. One of the thinks I liked best was there was a garbage can on every site! If you can, get a super patio site," recommends Chuck E.

RV site positioning: When considering yurt camping or RVing near Fremont, Ohio, South Bass Island offers specific site information. "There are no electric RV sites with a cliff-edge view. We stayed in Site 46, which was next to the restroom and just fair. The flattest RV sites with fair to good locations are Sites 57 and 44 (although even these will require a little leveling)," advises T S.

Dump station access: Kelleys Island State Park provides important services. "They have dumping stations that are easy to use and also running water at the station. The island is beautiful and we hope that you can enjoy it!" shares Rebecca F.
