    Seven Lakes State Park Campground

    Late fall almost empty campground

We spent 4 days in the sparsely-populated campground. Very quiet. Great for walking the dogs around Sand Lake and other park trails. Cool weather, vas expected. Clea restrooms, older showers with sulphurous hot water. Resident Sandhill crane family was an added bonus. It is our go-to local campground

    Pontiac Lake Recreation Area

    Great Spot!

Because it’s a state park, they have fresh drinking water, would for bonfires in private spots. This is one of the best areas for hiking and biking and kayaking and swimming.

    Seven Lakes State Park Campground

    Beautiful park

Very pretty park. Sites and facilities are well maintained.

Sites tend to slope towards Sand Lake so have leveling blocks if that's important to you.

    Proud Lake Recreation Area

    Amazing

You need to know that this place is so so clean! The grounds, the sites, the bathrooms and the showers are all impeccable. It is true we were there in the middle of the week, but I’ve stayed at plenty of places during the week where things have been less than desirable. Everyone was most pleasant and helpful and the view of the lake was beautiful. If the campground had been full we probably would not have been able to see the lake from our site.

Guide to Taylor

Seasonal camping destinations near Taylor, Michigan span from April through October with many sites offering varying amenities within a 30-mile radius. Fall foliage viewing peaks in mid-October while summer temperatures average 75-85°F during peak camping season. Most campgrounds in the region sit on flat terrain with elevations under 800 feet above sea level.

What to do

Kayaking at Bishop Lake: The lake at Bishop Lake Campground provides excellent paddling opportunities. "Our favorite was the lake for kayaking," notes a camper who appreciated the water access despite mentioning "our campsite had a view of the lake, but no shade."

Wildlife viewing at Proud Lake: Proud Lake Recreation Area offers excellent nature observation opportunities along its trail system. "The trails available here are where I learned to mountain bike, they're not the easiest but they are not so challenging that you won't have fun," explains one visitor. Another adds that the area has "the feel of 'up north' as it is wooded and tucked away in an oasis of water, greens, and wildlife galore."

Fishing access: Multiple lakes provide fishing opportunities throughout the region. At Wilderness Campground, visitors enjoy "a catch and release pond" and sites "right on the water." The campground is conveniently "close to a lot of restaurants and shopping" while still offering outdoor recreation.

What campers like

Private sites: Many campers appreciate when sites offer separation from neighbors. At Maumee Bay State Park Campground, visitors note that "all sites are very generous in size and appear to be spaced with a decent amount of space apart with foliage providing varying levels of privacy." Another camper elaborates: "One of my favorite things about this campground is that your spots are close together which is great for safety, however with the bushes and brush, it feels super private."

Clean facilities: Bathroom cleanliness frequently appears in positive reviews. A visitor to Sterling State Park Campground mentioned "the shower house is clean and in good condition" while noting the "sandy beach on Lake Erie is very nice." Another camper observed that sites are "nice large paved slabs" though "most trees are immature offering little shade."

Seasonal activities: Many campgrounds offer special events during peak season. At Wilderness Campground, families appreciate the "jumping pad for kids, playground and more for kids to do." The campgrounds near Taylor typically host special Halloween weekends in October before closing for winter.

What you should know

Weather considerations: Summer storms can impact camping conditions. At Detroit/Ann Arbor KOA, visitors have noted drainage problems after rain: "After only a few hours of moderate rainfall, we arrived to a completely flooded park." Another camper confirms this observation, noting that "when it rains several campsites get very wet."

Site selection strategies: Careful site selection improves the camping experience. A camper at Wayne County Fairgrounds RV Park observed that "a number of the campsites are 'buddy' sites meaning your patio opens to your neighbors so be careful which one you pick. This is pretty undesirable when the neighbor is a total stranger so we chose a site where we didn't have anyone next to us."

Noise levels: Proximity to urban areas impacts sound levels at campsites. Some campgrounds, like Wayne County Fairgrounds RV Park, are located "just off I-94 which makes for easy entrance and exit to the campground, but means there is lots of road noise." Train noise can also be an issue at some locations.

Tips for camping with families

Beach access importance: Haas Lake Park RV Campground provides swimming opportunities that families appreciate. "The views of the lake are so pretty, waterfront, fire rings, clean water," writes one visitor. The park features "4 lakes" with "plenty of nature" including "cranes and ducks in the water."

Kid-friendly amenities: Campgrounds with dedicated children's facilities receive positive reviews. At Harbortown RV Resort, families mention it's "pricey but fun" with "putt putt, go karts, batting cages and arcade" located next door. Another camper notes that special event weekends include "Mother's day activities [that] were great and were free!"

Playground access: Many regional campgrounds feature playgrounds for children. Wilderness Campground is described as "a great campground for a little getaway" with "plenty to do from swim, fish, bike the whole park, play at the park, watch movies at night in the community pavilion."

Tips from RVers

Site surfaces: RV campers should note the surface types at different campgrounds. At Maumee Bay State Park Campground, "all camper pads are paved and long enough to accommodate large RVs." Another visitor notes that "long, level sites that will fit any RV" are available, with "no trees for shade or privacy."

Hookup availability: Full-service sites are limited at some campgrounds. Sterling State Park Campground offers "everything from back ins with only electrical to pull throughs with full hook-ups." One camper notes that the park has "large level sites" with "full hook-ups" available at select sites.

Seasonal operation: Most campgrounds in the area operate seasonally. Wayne County Fairgrounds RV Park closes from "November 1 through April 1" according to visitors, while Sterling State Park operates from "April 1 to November 6." Advance planning is essential for spring and fall camping.
