Best Campgrounds near Erie, MI

Campgrounds around Erie, Michigan provide a range of accommodation options, with most facilities offering amenities for tent, RV, and cabin camping. Sterling State Park Campground, located on Lake Erie's western shore, features electrical hookups and shower facilities approximately 5 miles from downtown Monroe. Other notable options include Harbortown RV Resort and Monroe-Toledo North KOA, both offering a mix of developed sites with concrete pads and full hookups. Most campgrounds in the area cater to family-oriented camping with playgrounds, swimming areas, and organized activities, particularly during summer weekends.

Seasonal camping availability spans primarily from April through October, with some facilities like Camp Lord Willing RV Park remaining open year-round. Many campgrounds require advance reservations, particularly during summer weekends and Halloween-themed events that are popular in the region. "Very clean, nice sites with a friendly staff. We have a 21' camper and the sites feel small. Another big issue is how close it is to the expressway which is noisy and there are trains that go by during the night," noted one camper about Harbortown RV Resort. Road access is generally good throughout the region with paved entrances accommodating large RVs, though proximity to highways means some campgrounds experience traffic noise.

Waterfront access represents a significant draw at several campgrounds, with Sterling State Park providing Lake Erie shoreline and others featuring swimming ponds or river access. River Raisin Canoe Livery & Campground offers boat-in camping options from May through October. Family activities are frequently mentioned in camper reviews, with Monroe-Toledo North KOA receiving praise for its water slide, beach area, and organized events. As one visitor noted, "Friends and family for a Halloween themed event weekend resulted in lots of fun and good times. The kids stayed busy and made new friends while the adults hung out." Sites at most campgrounds tend to be relatively close together, with minimal privacy compared to more rustic options. Proximity to Toledo, Ohio and Detroit makes these campgrounds convenient weekend destinations for urban residents seeking outdoor recreation without traveling far from metropolitan areas.

    Great place to camp!

I had a great time at this location. It was clean, had everything that was needed and was a perfect location near the lake. I'll be sure to stay here again in the future!

    East Harbor State Park Campground

    Beautiful but Buzzy

I booked one night here for the amenities on a cross-country trip.

The laundry, showers, and water fill stations were convenient/ well-maintained.

    I gave only 4-star however 2 reasons.

    1. for the 5hr lawn mowing caravan that started at 7am in every direction. I’m not even sure what they were mowing since the lawns looked freshly cut. It was obnoxious! And
    2. not enough signage. For example, I had to ask for directions to the laundry rooms and then they are quarter only with no change machine. I had to make a trip back to the office for change.

Overall, a nice spot with all the amenities you could need. Plenty of room and nice multi-use trail to the beach was great!

    Van Buren State Park Campground

    Small and peaceful

We stayed one night on our way to IN. We’ve never been here before and wanted to check it off our list. It’s a small campground with one side as equestrian and the other side not. All sites had electric and water, no full hookup. There were only drop toilets and no showers. They were clean but I don’t think I’d want to do more than a weekend there. It had a nice playground for kids and plenty of trails to hike or go horseback riding. They also had a dog park and small wildflower garden. The check in cabin had ice and wood for sale but no store. Our site was really nice. The pads were recently paved and had a huge bumper at the end. The fire ring was nice and the site had plenty of space for tents.

    Meadow Brook Campground

    Motorcycle Tent Camping

Very friendly staff and clean facilities. Primarily a seasonal camper location but I found many open tent sites on a weekday. Nice grassy spot to pitch the tent, a rare luxury.

    East Harbor State Park Campground

    Nice park

Stayed 2 nights. The bathrooms are decent, laundry facility is good and the sites are a good size. There are trails and beaches in the park. I found a disc golf course in the park, and I really enjoyed the layout’s layout. The main issue is the mosquitoes, on every tee pad I was swarmed by at least 50 mosquitoes. It was by far the most mosquitoes I’ve ever seen in one area. I was warned, so I sprayed before going. It helped, but they still buzzed around your head.

    Bayfront Resort

    Very high-end almost hotel feel

The bad, lots are small the good very nice well kept place. Has really good views of the lake and cider point. The staff were nice. The only problem was I don’t have a boat or jet ski to take advantage of there private boat ramp. Overall the fam had a good time.

    Meadow Brook Campground

    Meadowbrook Park

Park is clean and tidy. Bathroom was clean. Plenty of hot water. Sites are spacious and level. Manager was extremely helpful. My truck didn't want to start so he grabbed his tractor and put our trailer on site for us. No charge for the dump station. All in all a nice stay. Only draw back is the constant trains right across the street blowing their horns going in and out of town.
