      Sandusky-Bayshore KOA

      Nice campground

We have stayed here twice and will definitely be back. Both times at the end of September. Nice campground, friendly staff, store is well stocked for anything you may have forgotten. The playground and jump mat for kids is awesome. They usually have some kind of activity for kids on weekends. We travel with 2 large Labrador retrievers and love being able to let them play off leash in the kamp k9 dog park. The sites are a little close together and the train is loud but other than that, it’s a wonderful place to stay. Very close to Cedar Point.

We stayed at this campground in the group camp area. The sites are tight but do provide water and 30 amp electric.

The campground offers a pond for fishing , swimming pool , bounce pad , inflatable lake fun, dog park and mini golf.

Since we were there as a group event we didn’t use any of the extras but it all looked nice and clean plus lots of fun.

Cell coverage was spotty but you could usually get some kind of signal.

The campground has a lot of seasonal sites as well as primitive tent camping and standard rv sites.

Nice Campground for a Group Event

This is our second time camping here and both times were for a group camping event. For this type of event it’s a great park. We had a whole sector the event with water and electric sites.

If we were going to camp here on our own I am not sure I would like it since it’s mostly set up for seasonal campers. So there are no hiking trail and there is also a lot of golf cart traffic.

They do offer a swimming pool , pond with inflatable slides , dog park , bound pad and miniature golf.

      Harrison Lake State Park Campground

      Quiet place to get away

We have been here a few times. Really enjoy the secluded sites and the lake. It’s a small campground but it’s clean and quiet. Most sites don’t have water hookups but they do have electric. There isn’t much to do outside of the campground but there is a nice lake with canoe and kayak rentals. Very pet friendly and even has a dog beach.

      Van Buren State Park Campground

      Small and peaceful

We stayed one night on our way to IN. We’ve never been here before and wanted to check it off our list. It’s a small campground with one side as equestrian and the other side not. All sites had electric and water, no full hookup. There were only drop toilets and no showers. They were clean but I don’t think I’d want to do more than a weekend there. It had a nice playground for kids and plenty of trails to hike or go horseback riding. They also had a dog park and small wildflower garden. The check in cabin had ice and wood for sale but no store. Our site was really nice. The pads were recently paved and had a huge bumper at the end. The fire ring was nice and the site had plenty of space for tents.

    Guide to Erie

Sterling State Park Campground offers waterfront camping with sites ranging from tents to full hookup RVs. Located on Lake Erie's western shore, the park features paved pads for RVs and campers, with most trees still growing and providing limited shade. Summer temperatures often reach 80-85°F, though winds off Lake Erie can make evenings cooler than inland areas.

    What to do

Biking and hiking trails: Sterling State Park Campground maintains several paved paths ideal for cyclists and walkers. "Bike and walking trails. Also has a smaller lake good for kayaking and fishing. It has a boat ramp to put into Lake Erie," notes Debra B. The park connects to trails leading to historical sites, with Frances V. mentioning, "There is a bike path that will take you all the way to the Historic Rasin River Battlefield and then to downtown Monroe."

Fishing opportunities: Multiple fishing spots exist throughout the area's dog friendly campgrounds near Erie. At Sterling State Park Campground, "the bass and walleye fishing can't be beat. No boat, no problem. The park has several fishing piers as well as a kayak launch into a small inlet which is navigatable all the way to the beach, approximately two miles." Wilderness Campground features a "cute catch and release pond" according to Shawn C.

Water recreation: Beyond swimming beaches, many campgrounds offer multiple water activities. "There is a camp store that has literally everything you can think of needing for camping, and more plus regular food. It's nice the swimming hole and fishing pond are separated," explains Miranda D. about Wilderness Campground. At Monroe-Toledo North KOA, "There is a sandy beach, small lake, water slide, and plenty of family activities," according to Cheryl H.

    What campers like

Clean facilities: Many pet-friendly campgrounds near Erie maintain well-kept amenities. Edward C. appreciates that at Sterling State Park "the bathroom facilities are clean and we'll maintained." At White Oak Campground, campers enjoy "Very clean facilities (bathroom, wash station, pavilion)" and Abby B. notes they have "Extremely clean bathrooms, dish washing station, and free firewood."

Spacious sites: Campers appreciate adequately sized camping areas. At Harbortown RV Resort, Bill B. found "All concrete roads and pads" and noted it was "Very Nice Big Rig Friendly." Sterling State Park impresses with "large level sites" according to Matthew F., who adds "Everything from back ins with only electrical to pull throughs with full hook-ups."

Swimming options: Most campgrounds offer water access beyond Lake Erie. Wilderness Campground features a "beautiful beach and camp sites right on the water" that Kaitlyn loves. At Monroe-Toledo North KOA, Beth G. mentions a "Nice size pool with enough lounge chairs" and that despite being "Busy on the weekends... it doesn't feel overcrowded."

    What you should know

Seasonal considerations: May flies can impact camping experiences. Kourtney D. mentions at Sterling State Park "First two nights were perfect but then the may flies hatched (in mid june) and covered everything." Edward C. advises: "Some time in June you can expect May Flies aka Fish Flies. Plan accordingly."

Site privacy varies: Some campgrounds offer more separation between sites than others. At Camp Lord Willing RV Park & Campground, Korinne K. notes "Lots are gravel" and "Shower House is at the front and not in a centralized location." Monroe-Toledo North KOA has limitations as Isaac R. explains: "The only down side was they pack in the campers super tight. I would guess 22 feet wide and I only had 5 feet behind my 30 foot camper until you reach the next camper."

Environmental factors: Weather patterns and location specifics affect camping experiences. White Oak Campground offers mostly good experiences though Megan T. notes "You can hear distant cars and some not so distant planes." At Sterling State Park, Edward C. observes "I've never been to this park when it wasn't very windy."

    Tips for camping with families

Kid-focused amenities: Many campgrounds offer dedicated children's activities. At Monroe-Toledo North KOA, Ryan M. notes, "The campground puts on a lot of activities for the kids" especially during Halloween when "Most sites decorate and some site go all out with haunted houses." The family-friendly atmosphere continues at Wilderness Campground where Daniel describes it as a "great place for camping with kids, plenty to do from swim, fish, bike the whole park, play at the park, watch movies at night in the community pavilion."

Water activities for children: Swimming areas provide family entertainment. Harbortown RV Resort includes "Basketball court, sand volleyball, playground, dog run, batting cages and go karts within walking distance" according to Bill B. Kevin K. enjoyed White Oak Campground with children: "We loved the hiking, bike trails, playground at Mallard lake area, and the kids liked exploring the sand dune area."

Halloween weekends: Special seasonal events create memorable family experiences. At Monroe-Toledo North KOA, Mary W. enjoyed "Friends and family for a Halloween themed event weekend resulted in lots of fun and good times. The kids stayed busy and made new friends while the adults hung out and had a good time!" Felix K. agrees: "Good for kids. We camp Halloween and is great with trick or treat."

    Tips from RVers

Site selection: RV campers should consider specific site features when booking. At Sterling State Park, Nicole A. found "Sites are nice and large paved slabs, most trees are immature offering little shade." For big rigs, Mano P. confirms the park "will accommodate any size travel trailer, fifth wheel camper of any kind, the pull throughs are huge."

Hookup placement: The location of utilities matters for RV setup. At Toledo East-Stony Ridge KOA, Julia H. experienced varied hookup positioning: "We had Full hook-up with a gravel pull-through... The site was easy to level." She also noted that "The site comes with a concrete patio with picnic table and fire ring. They sell wood for $6 a bundle."

Dump station considerations: Plan for potential end-of-weekend congestion. At Maumee Bay State Park Campground, Chris A. warns "Sunday morning's line at the dump station can get very backed up!" The timing of departure may significantly affect convenience at busier campgrounds.
