You need good brakes!!

It is not the easiest to get to, and the road is a test for your engine and brakes, but once you arrive it is a quiet peaceful park with great water access. We originally had a reservation for a view site with no hook ups, but upon arrival they had a hookup site(#104) available, and the temps were nearly 100 degrees, so we took it! The park is large and thus the areas seem nicely spaced apart, never felt crowded, even though there are over 100 sites. There is lots of shoreline and plenty of water for everyone. We launched the kayaks and enjoyed the water ourselves- paddled to the opposite shore and found a remote unoccupied camp.

Wild and scenic

The Selway is one of the most beautiful places in Idaho, and this campground is a good place to stay on your visit! There are plenty of sites (32) to stay at, however it can tend to get crowded, so I recommend reserving a spot ahead of time. The crowds are really the only downside to this site (if you prefer more quiet and privacy) but fortunately there are other sites along the river that are also great spots to camp. This campsites has plenty of amenities and many of the sites are pretty accessible. This is a great place for families, people with limited mobility, and the elderly to visit. There are vault toilets, potable water, and bear-proof dumpsters that serve the whole camp. Individual sites should all have tent spots, picnic tables, and a fire ring. The loop around the campsite is paved. Kids and families often ride their bikes around the loop. Like much of central Idaho, the wildlife includes black bears and rattlesnakes, so remember to be cautious and aware of our wilder friends! The area offers a great variety of recreation opportunities. Slower areas of the river offer great swimming, and the Lower Selway makes a great day trip on kayaks or rafts. There is lots of biking, hiking, and horseback riding along the river and through the mountains. Selway Falls are beautiful and a really fun stop.

Wow!

An incredibly beautiful area. It is rugged and feels so wild. Plan to take your time driving up 17 Mile road (takes about an hour to get here from Riggins!). The views are spectacular and easy to find. There are some areas that can be pretty dry and hot, so make sure to plan ahead and bring lots of water. There are several hikes that can be done in a single day or stretched out to multi day trips that go along mountaintops and alpine lakes. I have never seen more than a handful of other groups out here. This is one of my favorite places to go stay. After hiking, camping, and enjoying the mountains, head down to the Salmon for a swim! Watch out for black bears, rattlesnakes, mountain goats in the area.

Accessible

Very family friendly place and the trail is wheelchair accessible. Great trek along the river. Watch for rattlesnakes in the area!

Amazing view of the snake river

This was our first experience with a full service resort glamping. We just got a pop up trailer and got some free nights.. the park was beautiful the bathrooms were just remodeled. You were not super close to your neighbors. It as very quiet and there was a walking/ biking path along the river. Hells canyon is right up the road for tours going thru the rapids. We had a really good time.

Decent base camp area

Camp is decent with a few spots for smaller RV or campers - pit toilet - trees surround - high clearance vehicle recommended - steep in places

You can explore a few miles on the roads by UTV or by pickup while exploring the Salmon River drainage or the Snake River drainage. Traveling to Pittsburgh Landing and Kirkwood from here is considered a short day ride.

Steep terrain surrounds the area

Unit 18

A lot of cattle ranching in the summer and mostly hunters In the fall.

Forest service maps are recommended for travel since a lot just circle back to start, mostly on road, little access for off road travel.

Great view, Needs a keyed outhouse

I spent a night at the guard station in Aug 2019, and it was great. The guard station itself is nothing too special, but the view is incredible. I'm not a huge fan of the Umatilla area, but I like the isolation of staying at the forest service stations. This place would be better if it had a locking outhouse. Even though the guard station and outhouse are off the main road, several people stopped to look at the guard station and use the outhouse. Apparently it's a popular area for atvs, cuz some jagoff on a quad or dirt bike was using the outhouse every hour. FYI, if you want to view a forest service cabin or lookout and it's occupied, don't disturb the people, take a quick photo and be on your way. And definitely don't use their outhouse.

What heaven on earth truly is

Arrived late on a Saturday night originally intending to camp at the 7 devils campground but there were no available sites so decided to go back to windy saddle. We were the only campers at windy saddle and were able to get a perfect site at the head of the trail over looking hell’s canyon and Heaven’s gate. Had an absolutely gorgeous view of the devils peaks easy access to trails, devils lake, Heaven’s gate trail. One of the best camping trips I have ever had. There is a vault toilet but no other amenities which was ok for our stay. I am definitely going to be coming back to camp at windy saddle again.

Rustic camping right on the river

Lover camping on the river here! You can sleep right on the beach or up in the trees. Bring your own water but there are vault toilets. Need a pan or something for fires, but some of the best camping! Wake up to amazing views of the river, you can put your boat in upstream and float down to your site. There cliffs for jumping off and hikes can be found along the way. Lots of wildlife to see. One of my favorite spots.

Great stay!

This is our second visit to this park! Susan is so flexible and has wonderful customer service! We also love Ruby who runs the office as well and she is always helpful, and has great customer service as well! We love fishing from the docks and the breathtaking views of the river are really something! A stay here is always wonderful!
