The Rio Grande River flows directly through several campgrounds near City of Creede, allowing campers to fish within steps of their tents. At 8,700 feet elevation, summer temperatures typically range from 36°F mornings to 70°F afternoons, making layered clothing essential. Fall colors peak in late September when aspens turn golden throughout the surrounding San Juan Mountains.
What to do
Fishing access points: North Clear Creek offers excellent fishing opportunities beyond the campground. "Down the road are the beautiful North Clear Creek Falls. A few more miles down the road is Browns Lake. During late May and very early June you catch a lot of trout on the bridge that crosses the dam," notes Jennifer C.
Waterfall hiking: Families staying at Big Meadows Reservoir Campground can enjoy short hikes to scenic water features. "There's a short hike to a waterfall that's easily accessible to the base. If you're feeling adventurous, it's fairly easy to climb up to the top. So fun! My 8 year old LOVED this and begged to go back," shares Steph C.
Off-road adventures: The area around South Fork features extensive trail networks. "Only come here if you plan of off-roading. Everybody has a side by side or rent one. Great views but can't explore without it," explains Jared T. about the terrain near Mountain Views RV Park.
What campers like
River sounds for privacy: The proximity to flowing water at Rio Grande Campground creates natural white noise. "Every site was nice and had easy access to the river for fishing or a swim. Vault toilets were very clean. Come prepared since no trash or water available," explains Karin S.
Star viewing opportunities: The remote location creates exceptional night sky visibility. "As well, on a clear night, you can see so many stars. It was cold at night, but well worth bundling up to watch the sunset and check out the night sky. Star gazers, this will be right up your alley," says Steph C. about Big Meadows.
Wildlife encounters: Many dog friendly campgrounds near City of Creede offer wildlife viewing. "We have had bears around the campground and even woke up to mama and baby moose walking through the campsite," reports Jennifer C. about North Clear Creek. Campers should maintain food storage protocols to avoid attracting wildlife.
What you should know
Temperature variations: Pack for significant temperature swings, especially at higher elevations. "36 degree mornings, 70 degree days" are common at Cathedral Campground, according to Robert E., who also mentions "well spaced campsites, clean vault toilets, water for filling containers only."
Road access considerations: Several campgrounds require driving on unpaved roads. "The road there was sketch for my friends pulling a 30 plus foot trailer, but for us the road was bumpy but worth it," explains Kareem E. about Cathedral Campground. For dog friendly camping options near Creede, plan drive times accordingly.
Water availability limitations: Many campgrounds lack drinking water. "Great location, easy drive on a road, would maybe have a hard time turning into campsite with large camper. Only negative is no water. It's a really awesome free campground," notes Kacy S. about Cathedral Campground. Bring containers to fill at the Creede Visitor Center.
Tips for camping with families
Best sites for children: Some campgrounds have more family-friendly layouts than others. "Site 4 is FCFS, it is super private," notes Robert E. about Marshall Park Campground, though he cautions "some sites are too small and close together and no privacy."
Wildlife education opportunities: The abundant small wildlife creates learning moments. Cathedral Campground has a "chipmunk army" according to Robert E., while Christina mentions "the creek was too low to fish, but there were great fishing spots in South Fork that we drove to."
Altitude considerations: The high elevation affects children differently. "Oxygen is a bit thin so get acclimated first," advises Bob M. about Big Meadows Reservoir Campground. Allow 1-2 days for children to adjust before planning strenuous activities.
Tips from RVers
Limited large rig sites: RVers with bigger units should research site specifics. "Our 5th wheel is a short one and there we only a couple of sites we could fit. I would think a 30' trailer would be about it," notes Doug W. about Cathedral Campground. Many dog-friendly camping options near City of Creede have size restrictions.
Hookup availability: Antlers Rio Grande Lodge and RV Park offers more amenities than most area campgrounds. "The sites are closer than prefer but it has concrete pads with a table. Full hookups. There's a restaurant on site and back porch live music from Thursday through Saturday night overlooking the Rio Grande River," shares Brenda.
GPS routing problems: Be cautious with navigation systems when approaching the area. "I only have one complaint....this was our first time here and our GPS took us down a washboard dirt road called Deep Creek Road...wish they had warned us to stay on 149 through Creede!" advises Dana S.
