Best Dog-Friendly Camping near Durango, CO

Junction Creek Campground permits leashed pets throughout the developed campsite area with full hookups available for RVs. Located just a few miles from downtown Durango, this pet-friendly option includes clean restrooms and trash service, though showers are not available. United Campground of Durango also welcomes pets while offering more extensive amenities including showers, water and electric hookups, and a swimming pool. Pets must remain on leash at all times, and owners are expected to clean up after their animals. The bathrooms and shower facilities are consistently well-maintained according to multiple visitor reports.

For those seeking more rustic experiences with their dogs, Bayfield/Durango Dispersed Camping on BLM land accommodates pets without leash restrictions in most areas, though keeping dogs under voice control is recommended due to wildlife. No water or facilities are available at these free sites, requiring campers to pack in all pet supplies. Madden Peak Road dispersed camping similarly offers free, pet-friendly camping options with fire rings but no facilities. RV owners should note that La Plata County Fairgrounds provides a central in-town location with electric hookups and water connections that welcomes pets. The convenient bike path access allows for dog walking along the Animas River trail, though the area can be dusty from maintenance vehicle traffic during daytime hours.

    Durango RV Resort

    Will stay here again!

We had to overnight in Durango area for one night, on our way from Colorado to Arizona. The campground is clean, quiet, gorgeous, it is close to the highway though, we had a gorgeous spot with a view (so worth it). It has a pool, laundry, even a breakfast spot that is open on certain hours, times of the day. We did not get to experience it. You’re only 7 miles away (east) from Durango, which is a very amazing, cute small (walkable) city!

Red Mountain Motel & RV Park

    Tight and administrative problems

The campground has a train that comes in from Durango once a day. It’s fun to watch and the mountain with the bridle vail waterfall. There’s a walking area behind the park as well. Just make sure you get a confirmation and it’s what you sign up for or you will be charged. In their mind they don’t make mistakes.

    Bayfield/Durango Dispersed Camping

    Next to highway, 5g connection

Going east from Durango, you make a right turn on silver hills road. You will see the blm sign. Gravel road, fire pits. We stayed in a camper van at one of the first spots and had 5g internet with AT&T. Can hear highway noise

    Lower Hermosa Campground

    Review

The host is very friendly. It's a smaller campsite. It was not very busy when we were there...I liked that. There was plenty of firewood to collect in the area. It was $18 a night. My phone had some service. I liked that it was pretty quick to get to from Durango (about 30min).

    Chicago Basin

    Great back country camping

We spent several nights here as we hiked the multiple 14ers.  We took the train from Durango, which was an easy enough process getting in and out.  The hike up was not bad at all.  Multiple established camping areas with great shade.  Plentiful water.  Zero mobile coverage.  No issues with bears, but the goats were very persistent.

    Bay City Campground

    Great dispersed spot!

This is our second time here. We were here in June and despite it being a small campground we’re able to secure two spots. We are back in October. The river is more shallow and the air more crisp, yet still gives the feel of such a natural feel and sound. Private, cozy, and secluded. Only 25 minutes from Durango. Hate to promote it because more people will seek it out.

    Target Tree Campground

    Great campground in our van

We reserved 6 nites here. Host B is in his 2 nd yr here and is a peach of a guy. All campsites are carefully raked and put in good shape - no ashes left in rings. Host sells .75 sq ft of firewood for $7 / bundle or 3 for $20. Good water hauled in from Durango and available at numerous spigots thruout camp. 2 very clean pit toilet bathroom facilities w/ 2 heads at each.

Guide to Durango

Junction Creek Campground sits at 7,300 feet elevation in a ponderosa pine forest northwest of Durango, Colorado. The campground connects directly to the Colorado Trail with hiking access directly from several camping loops. The area experiences mild summer temperatures averaging 75-85°F during daytime hours, though afternoon thunderstorms are common from July through August.

What to do

Mountain biking access: Several trails within reach of Junction Creek Campground offer options for mountain bikers. "There is great walking and mountain biking right from camp too! Enjoy!" writes Matt H.

River activities: The Animas River runs close to United Campground of Durango, providing water recreation options. One camper noted, "The tent sites have a table with benches. It's really close to the Durango old Town area (like 10 min drive or less) and about 45 minutes to mesa verde."

Fishing opportunities: Alpen Rose RV Park features a trout pond on site. A reviewer mentioned, "There is a very nice dog run and exercise area. They also have a trout pond. The sites are pretty level for the most part, and spaced out nicely."

What campers like

Train watching: The historic Durango-Silverton narrow gauge railway passes through some campgrounds. "The greatest thing about this campground though is that the Durango steam train goes right through the campground. To see the historic train right from your camper or tent window is pretty great," notes Nick S. about United Campground.

Spacious sites: Many campers appreciate the site sizes at Alpen Rose RV Park. A reviewer mentioned, "The sites are super easy to navigate. This park has million dollar views of the Durango mountains and is just far enough out to get away but close enough for the convenience of 'city living' the dog park is MASSIVE."

Free camping options: For budget-conscious campers, dispersed options provide no-cost alternatives. "This spot is a little tough to find but can be worth it if you need a good free camp for the night. Located off Hwy 160, about 14 miles from Durango you will find BLM land," writes a camper about Bayfield/Durango Dispersed Camping.

What you should know

Cell service variations: Coverage differs significantly between campgrounds. At Lower Hermosa, "The internet reception ranges from okay to excellent, depending on the site." Meanwhile, at Junction Creek, a visitor noted, "No cell service at all for AT&T users though."

Reservation challenges: Many popular sites fill quickly, especially during peak season. "Was very lucky to get a FCFS site for Memorial Day weekend. The campground was full by Thursday afternoon," reports a Junction Creek visitor.

Weather considerations: Due to the elevation, temperatures can fluctuate dramatically. A Lower Hermosa Campground visitor shared: "High elevation and lots of shade. Was a little chilly at night in early May."

Tips for camping with families

Affordable in-town option: La Plata County Fairgrounds provides budget camping with good city access. "What a find in the middle of Durango... We had access to the trails by the river. There are only 6 spots with water and 30 or 50 amp electric. It was $28 for a night," notes a visitor.

Swimming pools: Some campgrounds offer swimming options for kids. Regarding Lightner Creek Campground, a camper shared: "We loved Lightner Creek. The creek was great, the pool was welcome relief for the kids and we enjoyed talking to fellow campers."

Dog-friendly recreation: Many dog friendly campgrounds near Durango offer specific pet amenities. At Alpen Rose, "There is a very nice dog run and exercise area... and even dog bathing station!" While the Animas River trail provides "dog walking along the Animas River trail," accessible from several campsites.

Tips from RVers

Downtown accessibility: RV sites with easy downtown access save on parking fees. "If you're planning on riding the Scenic Railroad, this is the place for you... the city free trolley stop is right at the entrance and will take you to within a block and a half of the station downtown."

Hookup options: For RVers seeking full-service options with dog-friendly policies, Madden Peak Road provides free dispersed camping. "Road is easily accessed with a low clearance car (Jetta in my case). Added bonus is good Verizon coverage," notes a camper, making it ideal for working remotely with pets.

Seasonal closures: Be aware of road access limitations during winter months. A Madden Peak visitor noted: "Closed from November to May 31st," which affects many pet-friendly dispersed camping areas around Durango.
