Breathtaking but NO

This was such a magically beautiful location. The aspens were amazing, the surrounding forest, flowing river and waterfalls, and sweeping mountain scapes were breathtaking. Why only two stars? Well, first off, our campsite seemed too perfect to still be open, and it was. Unbeknownst to us, we were the only place for miles that you can get cell service, so we had 20-30 “visitors” a day drive up to our little round about spot to get a phone call or text out. That’s more people I see a day than even my own neighborhood and far more than I want to see on my outdoor exhursion.

Ok, so we picked a bad spot.... but every place we hiked and drove was overrun with cattle. Within an hour of our arrival and set up, cows began to wander over, pooping all over the place. Cows were EVERYWHERE- all the way up to Silver Jack reservoir and further. That made the flies worse than normal. They were the only “wildlife” we saw in four days... 15-20 at a time... hundreds overall. In all of my years camping in Colorado, I’ve never experienced this. Every camper we encountered complained about it. I loved the views, but I’ll never be back to camp.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the dispersed camping rules at Owl Creek Pass?

Owl Creek Pass offers dispersed camping on National Forest land, following standard USFS regulations. Campers must practice Leave No Trace principles, camp at least 100 feet from water sources, and use existing fire rings when having campfires. There's typically a 14-day stay limit within a 30-day period. No facilities are provided, so come prepared with water and waste disposal solutions. Always check with the local Forest Service office for current fire restrictions and specific regulations before your trip.

What is the best time of year to go dispersed camping at Owl Creek Pass?

Summer and early fall (July through September) offer the most reliable weather and access conditions for camping at Owl Creek Pass. Early fall is particularly spectacular when the aspen groves transform into brilliant gold. The area features breathtaking mountain landscapes, flowing rivers, and waterfalls during these months. Weather can change quickly at higher elevations, so always prepare for cooler nighttime temperatures and sudden storms, even in summer. Winter camping is possible for experienced adventurers but requires specialized gear and possibly snow vehicles.

Where is Owl Creek Pass dispersed camping located in Colorado?

Owl Creek Pass is located in the Uncompahgre National Forest in southwestern Colorado, nestled in the San Juan Mountains. The pass connects Ridgway and Cimarron, crossing through stunning mountain terrain. This scenic area features aspen groves, forests, flowing rivers, and panoramic mountain vistas. It's accessible via Owl Creek Road (Forest Road 858), which connects County Road 8 near Ridgway with Highway 50 near Cimarron.

Is 4WD required to access Owl Creek Pass camping areas?

While the main Owl Creek Pass road is generally passable for most vehicles in good conditions, a high-clearance vehicle is strongly recommended, and 4WD is beneficial for accessing many of the dispersed camping spots. During or after rain, the dirt roads can become slick and rutted. Some of the side roads and camping areas definitely require 4WD and high clearance. Road conditions can deteriorate quickly with weather changes, so always check current conditions before heading out.

How far is Owl Creek Pass camping from Ridgway, Colorado?

Owl Creek Pass is approximately 20 miles east of Ridgway, Colorado. The drive from Ridgway takes about 45-60 minutes depending on road conditions and how far into the pass you plan to camp. The route follows County Road 8 and then Forest Road 858. The journey itself is part of the experience, offering stunning views of the San Juan Mountains and scenic forest landscapes. Allow extra travel time if you're pulling a trailer or driving a larger vehicle, as some sections of the road can be narrow and winding.
