Highlands Ranch campers have convenient access to dispersed camping options within an hour's drive. Located at 5,920 feet elevation just south of Denver, the area serves as a gateway to Pike National Forest where temperatures can drop 20-30 degrees at night even during summer months. Free camping sites typically allow 14-day stays but fill quickly during weekends.
What to do
Mountain biking trails: Buffalo Creek Recreation Area offers excellent terrain for cyclists of all levels. "Great place to spend a day to a few weeks depending on lifestyle... Fire pits and hiking near," reports atea J. The area connects to the Colorado Trail with "many walking/biking trails" according to Ken H.
Water activities: At Chatfield State Park Campground, the reservoir provides multiple recreation options. "Fishing, biking, hiking, and even a dog park!" notes Hayley K., who found it "a great way to get away from the city but aren't quite able to make it to the mountains." The reservoir attracts many boaters, especially on weekends.
Riverside walking paths: Clear Creek RV Park offers streamside recreation in Golden. "There is so much to do at this location; aside from the sectioned off RV area, there are lots of paths and locals parks to adventure around. Tubing & swimming in the creek is wonderful especially in summertime," writes Dea D., who added that "fishing, so much fun fishing in all the different spots along the creek."
What campers like
Easy mountain access: Rampart Range Recreation Area provides dispersed camping with mountain views. "We went up for a quick weekend trip and it was perfect, lots of campsites along the road and not too close together," reports Emma H. Taylor V. advises: "I would recommend stopping at host site to see what sites are open as they stay up to date on all of them regularly and can point you to the best views."
Spacious sites: Most pet-friendly campgrounds near Highlands Ranch offer adequate spacing. At Rampart Range, "The sites are spacious and pretty isolated from other campers but the main road is surprisingly busy and you are close to the OHV trail system," notes Megan C. For Buffalo Creek, Matt T. explains it has "about 30 or so sites. First come first serve but are free. Nice large sites many have room for RV's. Good distance between sites for privacy as well."
Clean facilities: For those wanting amenities, several campgrounds maintain high standards. Janine R. appreciated Cherry Creek State Park's "extremely clean bath houses cleaned daily and coin-op laundry." At Chief Hosa Campground, Danielle V. found "the bathrooms were VERY clean and seemed to be pretty new - plenty of bathroom stalls, sinks, and large showers."
What you should know
Weekend crowds: Almost all camping areas fill quickly Friday-Sunday. "It is very difficult to find a spot on a weekend. We got up there around 6:30pm on Friday night and after driving around for a couple hours ended up bailing and going home," warns Keiko F. about Buffalo Creek Recreation Area.
Highway noise: Some campgrounds experience traffic sounds. Clear Creek RV Park backs up to major roads in Golden, while Chief Hosa Campground has "close to the highway and even with the fans on at night in the pop-up we could still hear some of the highway noise, but it wasn't a big deal," according to Danielle V.
