Best Dog-Friendly Camping near Eldorado Springs, CO

Winiger Ridge at Gross Reservoir features multiple pet-friendly campsites spread across designated camping areas near the water. Dogs must be kept on leash throughout the campground, with each site accommodating up to two pets per reservation. Both tent and RV campers will find suitable spots, though many sites require high-clearance 4WD vehicles to access. Golden Gate Canyon State Park's two established campgrounds—Reverend's Ridge and Deer Creek—also welcome pets with standard leash requirements. These sites include amenities like picnic tables and fire rings, with electric hookups available for RVs. Several dispersed camping areas including Gordon Gulch and Dream Canyon provide more primitive options for camping with dogs. Most visitors note the campsites fill quickly, especially during summer weekends.

Dog-friendly hiking trails surround many of these campgrounds, with Forsythe Canyon Trail offering a moderate one-mile loop accessible from Winiger Ridge that leads to scenic reservoir views. No swimming is permitted in Gross Reservoir for humans or pets, though paddleboarding and kayaking are popular activities. The rough access roads to Winiger Ridge make prior planning essential when bringing pets—high clearance vehicles are strongly recommended, as multiple reviewers report challenging driving conditions. Pack in all water for pets as drinking water is unavailable at most sites. The construction noise from reservoir work can disturb pets at certain campsites, particularly at night when sound carries across the water. No official pet waste stations exist at the dispersed sites, so campers must pack out all pet waste following Leave No Trace principles.

    Spruce Lake RV Park

    Great location for RMNL

The selling point of this campground is location. It’s as close to Rocky Mountain National Park as you can get without actually camping on NPS property. You are completely surrounded by the mountains and the views are amazing. There’s a beautiful river flowing nearby. Easy access to Estes Park. I biked into downtown and back easily. Close to a great little market and several restaurants. Sites are very tight with no privacy unless you are along the edges of the park. Nice laundry facilities, mini golf, and a small pond. There’s a small dog park but I’d recommend taking your dog to the city’s dog park about 10 minutes away. It’s worth the drive and your dog can go swimming on a beach.

    Chatfield State Park Campground

Popular and large campground near the lake

As it is very close to the city, the temperature stays consistent with Denver temps. So in the summer, it will not be as cool as some mountain spots. That being said, it is very easy to get to and you’ll have the lake right there to cool off!

Entrance into the state park is about $7/day. There is a dog park within the state park that allows off leash and has some ponds the dogs can swim in. Entrance to the dog park is $2.

We had a great time at this campground. We spent 4 days in a spot right next to the river. Close to Rocky Mountain National Park. Really enjoyed the river, dog park, live music on sat. night and laundry.

    Cherry Creek State Park Campground

A piece of nature tucked into the city.

Located in the city, but once you’re in the park you don’t feel like you’re in the city at all!!! The RV spots have full hookups and are nice and spacious, as are the neighbors. We were able to set up a tent too! Great place to stroll and relax. Beautiful sunsets. Clean bathrooms and laundry facilities with a little vending machine.

A great place for camping (RV and tent spots), fishing, wildlife/nature viewing, hiking, boating (all water activities), has a swim beach, marina, off leash dog park, shooting range, horse stables that you can do a beautiful hour horseback ride.

FEES: Campsites $41 full hookup, basic campsite $28, daily park pass is $11, annual park pass $83, daily dog park pass $3, annual dog park pass $25, and group camping is available too.

    Cherry Creek State Park Campground

    City Camping at it's Best

Great campground here at this state park. We have always stayed in the Arapahoe Group Loop for holiday weekends. Arapahoe Group Loop has a great pavillion with outdoor kitchen and bathroom. Overall Camper amenities are great and very clean. Many well shaded individual sites are available. Campsites are far from other park amenities like Dog Park, Shooting Range, Marina. Swim beach is a 10 minute walk-able distance from campground. Recommend driving to get around the park.

    Cherry Creek State Park Campground

Super busy but great for dogs

This is a location that you only camp if you literally don't have any worries about being around people. It is ALWAYS packed due to the tons of hiking trails, huge dog park, and water access.

I taught kayaking to little ones here and it was always a fight to get into the park, get to the water, and not get run over by boats and unexperienced (or entitled) people.

The campground is well maintained but it sit really worth being able to be basically in a metropolitan city? For me I'll go somewhere more nature friendly and less crowded.

BUT it is excellent for dogs. We love taking out dogs here because they can play in water, run their hearts out, and hang out with other dogs. It is pricey to get into the park though. $80 for a year pass to the state parks and another $25 for the dog park fees.

Guide to Eldorado Springs

Camping areas near Eldorado Springs sit at elevations between 5,600 and 8,500 feet, creating varied camping conditions throughout the year. The region features ponderosa pine forests intersected by creek drainages and rocky outcroppings. Winter temperatures often drop below freezing at night, while summer days typically reach 75-90°F with afternoon thunderstorms common from July through September.

What to do

Mountain biking on extensive trail networks: West Magnolia Campground offers direct access to numerous mountain biking trails. "This spot is pretty and is close to the highway, the road seemed a little sketchy in the snow but my RAV4 AWD made it just fine to most of the sites," notes Catalina H. about the Gordon Gulch Dispersed Area.

Explore Nederland: Located just 10 miles from several dispersed camping areas, Nederland offers coffee shops, restaurants, and local stores for supplies. "Nederland is close enough to run into town if needed," reports Nicci M. about camping in the area.

Fishing at Gross Reservoir: The reservoir holds rainbow and lake trout but requires appropriate fishing licenses. "The best part is exploring Gross Reservoir. There are a lot of inlets to paddle into and trails to explore," writes Karl G. from Winiger Ridge at Gross Reservoir.

Visit Central City's historic district: Just 20 minutes from camping areas like Denver West-Central City KOA. "The park is beautiful the views are truly amazing! The staff is fantastic and always willing to help," says Brian W.

What campers like

Mountain views from elevated sites: Many campsites provide panoramic views of the Continental Divide. "Golden Gate Canyon SP is absolutely gorgeous! We loved the experience at the park, the trails are great and the views are wonderful," reports Minette and Ron G. about Golden Gate Canyon State Park.

Well-spaced campsites: Reverend's Ridge offers good separation between sites. "Plenty of space between sites, electricity. Wooded and scenic," describes Henry K. about the campground.

Wildlife viewing opportunities: Early mornings provide chances to spot moose, deer, and various bird species. "Get up early and drive mountain base road...we caught a great view of a moose," recommends Diana M.

Year-round camping options: Many dispersed areas remain accessible during winter months. "It snowed on me overnight and the road was still very passable," reports Catalina H. about Gordon Gulch in January.

What you should know

High clearance vehicles recommended: Many dispersed sites require navigating rough roads. "Camp sites are nice, but except for a few (~5) the rest require a serious climb (drive) up a gnarly hill with deep ruts," warns Graham S. about Winiger Ridge.

Fire restrictions change frequently: Check current fire restrictions before your trip. Some areas prohibit fires year-round, while others permit them seasonally. "Do not violate the fire bans. The ticket is a million dollars($510)," cautions Justin B.

Limited cell service: Many camping areas have spotty or no coverage. "Cell Service is patchy at best. On verizon I had 2 bars of gen 1 service, and could only get patchy data with my multi directional cell booster," notes Justin B. about West Magnolia.

Construction noise at Gross Reservoir: Ongoing dam expansion creates noise that carries across the water. "There is a Mine or Quarry on the other side of the 'lake' and they worked non stop for 24 hours, which means non stop noise," reports melissa M.

Tips for camping with families

Golden Gate Canyon offers family-friendly amenities: The established campgrounds have reliable facilities. "The campground is in a beautiful area near Golden. There are plenty of hiking trails in the park some easy some difficult," writes Rich M. about Reverend's Ridge Campground.

Consider campgrounds with activities: Some locations offer more than just camping. "This spot is just a quick ride outside of Golden. The scenery is gorgeous with several trails to hike or mountain bike. The campsites are clean and easy to get to. Great for families with little ones," shares Meghan H.

Pack layers for all weather: Mountain temperatures fluctuate significantly between day and night. "Be sure to watch the weather and at 8,500 ft above sea level no bugs!" advises Brian W. about camping at higher elevations.

Bring entertainment options: Some sites have limited natural shade. "Not a lot of shade, ground kinda pebbly. If you're looking for a quick post up near Denver or Boulder, sure. If you're looking for peaceful camping, you could do far better," warns Bojangles R. about Standley Lake Regional Park.

Tips for RVers

Reserve early for hookup sites: Electric sites at established campgrounds fill quickly. "Loop E (electric hookups) is very spacious and well laid out. Every campsite is a pull thru allowing you situate anywhere along the paved area to best suit your needs," shares Dennis G. about Reverend's Ridge.

Scout sites before committing: Many dispersed areas have challenging access. "I wouldn't try this with a camper/RV, or anything that doesn't have high clearance and power," cautions Graham S. about Winiger Ridge.

Consider proximity to amenities: Some RV parks offer additional services. "This small, but clean, campground is located perfectly a walk, or bike ride, away from the town of Golden. Not too far from hwy 70 it a great overnight stop or a destination," says Rebeca H. about Clear Creek RV Park.

Bring leveling blocks: Many sites require significant adjustment. "The sites are not necessarily level & certainly aren't spacious," notes Michele A. about Dakota Ridge RV Park.
