Best Dog-Friendly Camping near Boulevard, CA

Lark Canyon Campground permits dogs throughout its primitive sites located within Cleveland National Forest near Boulevard. Several pet-friendly options include Lake Morena County Park, Boulevard KOA Holiday, and Bow Willow Primitive Campground in Anza-Borrego Desert State Park. Boulevard KOA provides full hookups, cabins, and tent sites where pets are welcome, with continual patrols ensuring safety for campers and their animals. Lake Morena offers electric hookups, water access, and designated pet areas on its spacious sites, though campers should watch for fire ants when letting dogs explore. Bow Willow's primitive camping areas allow pets with standard leash requirements and provide picnic tables with shade covers at each site. Blair Valley Primitive Campground offers free dispersed camping with pets allowed, though without amenities like running water.

The Boulevard KOA Holiday stands out with its mini petting zoo and seasonal hayrides, creating a unique environment where pets can camp alongside farm animals. Cleveland National Forest's trail system connects directly to Lark Canyon Campground, providing miles of pet-accessible hiking paths with picnic tables available for rest stops. At Lake Morena, the 5.9-mile lakeside trail offers wildlife viewing opportunities where visitors have spotted bald eagles, wild turkeys, and deer while walking dogs. Anza-Borrego's campgrounds require careful planning as summer temperatures can be dangerous for pets, with limited shade at some sites. The well-maintained facilities at Lake Morena include regular ranger patrols that enforce quiet hours starting at 10 PM, important for preventing dog barking disturbances. Vault toilets and trash service are available at most campgrounds, though pet waste disposal is generally the owner's responsibility.

    Circle RV Resort

It’s OK for a couple weeks

Amenities isn’t all that great when they’re not maintained well. Gym has damaged equipment, pool has lose hand rails and heated pool is filthy. Pool furniture is outdated, broken and dirty. They will only play country music at the pool. The shower house looks like it has recently been updated but smells and has mold growing already. They do not allow any kind of camper except big rigs/trailers. They have a “dog park”, which is very small and smell horrendous due to there only being fake plastic grass. Most owners will also not clean up after their pets, so you or your dog may step into feces quite often there. RV park is between highway and main road - no quiet found here. Rules on what you’re allowed to put up for shade will vary depending on how much management likes you there. All in all an Ok place if you aren’t actually spending you time there.

Current update 12/13/25 The road is being repaved and resealed. They are also doing movie nights in the weekends for kids and have the occasional arts and crafts for them. For that I have added an extra star since there isn’t much for smaller children in general.

    Admiral Baker RV Park

Beautiful clean RV park within a park

RV spots are arranged in a horseshoe around a park with a playground. Sites on outside of horseshoe have to walk between interior sites to get to the park, bathrooms and laundry. Wi-Fi is good enough to work remotely. We didn’t try streaming.

Adjacent to the RV park are sports fields, picnic areas and a golf course.

The dog park is nice and clean and is reserved for RV park guests. The pool is beautiful and has a two-story tall slide. The pool is closed this summer and next (2022-23) but is normally open Memorial Day to Labor Day.

RV park is open to military and retired military.

    Loomerland

    Excellent little getaway with animals!

Our family of 3 just left the campground this morning, and we had a great time during our 1 night stay.  To find it, just plug the GPS coordinates into Google maps and follow the instructions.  It’s fairly primitive (outhouse and water spigot), but the sky is clear and the whole place is very serene with trees and nature. They have several protective, very human-friendly dogs on the property.  They also open the barn around 0800 and allow campers to pet the rabbits, chickens, cats, pigs, turkey, ducks, and even feed the goats.  Sites have campfire rings (bring your own wood), picnic table, and a couple Adirondack style chairs.  The staff is also very friendly and informative.  We will certainly be back.

    Circle RV Resort

    25min from most places

The good things about this place is, relatively cheap compared to most RV places in the area around San Diego; decent bath/shower rooms + no coins; pool/hottub/gym/gameroom/laundry available; you can walk to some restaurants and a dollar tree Cons on this place would be terrible “dog park” there’s a bit of space but nowhere will you find actual grass for any of the many dogs that are here with their campers; every site is covered in gravel (just not my favorite); a lot of sites are fully exposed to sun throughout the hole day; very little to no privacy here

Rio Bend RV & Golf Resort

    Convenient and clean, nice park

We only stayed one night in a pull through but enjoyed the facilities. Park is very clean and has a good restaurant. They do have a lot of mobile homes but most are newer and well kept. Some RV’s look abandoned which is a shame. Nice dog park area with grass, could use water for the pups. Laundry and bathrooms were very clean. Pool area and restaurant, bar area is nice. We had dinner, wing’s were great burger was good but not great. Service was very good. Pull through site was narrow but had all we needed for one night. Looks like the workout facility is nice.

Culp Valley Primitive Campground — Anza-Borrego Desert State Park

    Nice camp, Very desert

The campsite itself is very well maintained. Metal fire pits are available and bathrooms. The last place I camped was $30 and had neither.

The scenery is beautiful but very desert. Cholla cacti are everywhere so watch your pets paws (my poor dog kept getting them in between her paw pads). Also didn’t get very cool in the evening, but had a beautiful night sky.

There are trails; no dogs allowed.

    Did see a tarantula.

Guide to Boulevard

Boulevard is a small community at around 3,400 feet elevation in eastern San Diego County where desert meets mountain terrain. The area experiences dramatic temperature swings typical of high desert regions, with summer temperatures often exceeding 95°F and winter nights dropping below freezing. Camping options near Boulevard range from primitive sites in Cleveland National Forest to full-service campgrounds with various pet accommodations.

What to do

Desert exploration hikes: Near Blair Valley Primitive Campground, visitors can discover ancient history alongside natural beauty. "Ochre petroglyphs, fantastic night sky views, a variety of flora and fauna, hiking, and some challenging 4x4 lines await you here," notes Jeremy A. The area contains evidence of indigenous cultures who inhabited the region for thousands of years.

Astronomical viewing: The region's dark skies provide exceptional stargazing opportunities. At Blair Valley, campers report remarkable celestial experiences: "We were able to see so many stars and constellations. We saw shooting stars nearly every minute and we were also able to find Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune all with the naked eye," shares E.

Trail connections: The El Prado Campground (also known as Laguna) offers access to multiple trail systems. Luis N. mentions, "Lots of trails to hike or bike for people of all skill levels!" The Big Laguna Trail and access to the Pacific Crest Trail provide options for both casual and serious hikers with pets.

What campers like

Night sky viewing: The region's limited light pollution creates ideal conditions for stargazing. At Bow Willow Primitive Campground, Taylor notes the special sunset experience: "We were there before sunset and everything was so pink, it was gorgeous!!" The campground's remote location enhances astronomical viewing conditions.

Wildlife encounters: Many campers appreciate the natural animal sightings in the area. At Lake Morena County Park, Glamper G. reports: "Lots of wildlife to see. Bobcats, deer, quail, rabbits and wild turkeys." These wildlife viewing opportunities add to the pet-friendly camping experience near Boulevard.

Temperature variation: The high desert elevation provides relief from coastal heat in summer months. Regarding Burnt Rancheria Campground, Harry C. notes: "Only open March to October. Very quiet during week. Busy during weekends." This seasonal availability coincides with optimal temperature conditions for desert camping with pets.

What you should know

Water limitations: Most primitive sites lack running water. E. warns about Blair Valley: "Watch out for cactus and needles that are buried in the sand. It is not recommended to bring dogs or walk barefoot for this reason." Always bring adequate water for both people and pets when camping at primitive sites.

Fire regulations: Fire rules vary by location and season. For Blair Valley, Brittany K. advises: "Fires are ok as long as they're in a metal pit. You'll have to bring your own in as there aren't any pits there." During high fire danger periods, complete bans may be implemented across all sites.

Seasonal considerations: Desert temperatures affect camping comfort significantly. About El Prado Campground, Ryan W. cautions: "Whatever the temperature is listed at on the weather sites subtract 10-15 degrees at night. The temperatures are based on the minor town at a lower elevation." This temperature differential is important when planning pet-friendly camping near Boulevard, especially for pets sensitive to temperature extremes.

Tips for camping with families

Facilities assessment: Choose campgrounds based on needed amenities. At KOA Boulevard (formerly Boulevard/Cleveland National Forest KOA), Aaron A. notes: "Has a pool, park for the kids, and a little shop to get any of your necessities." These features provide backup options when outdoor activities are limited.

Site selection: Research specific site characteristics before arrival. Regarding Lake Morena, Brenda K. advises: "Always clean, plenty of shade at most sites," which is particularly important when camping with children and pets in hot weather.

Activity planning: Prepare alternate activities for varying weather conditions. Jonathan M. observed at Lake Morena: "Watch your children that like to play on the ground. There are fire ants everywhere and the yellow jackets would swarm every time there was food." Such wildlife challenges require advance planning, especially with pets present.

Tips from RVers

Road access awareness: Some campgrounds have challenging approach roads. For Blair Valley, E. cautions: "The road in was a bit rough in some areas. Wash out and silty sand could pose problems for smaller vehicles or campers so use your best judgment. Single track roads in/out so you will need to yield off the main road when encountering larger oncoming vehicles."

Hookup variations: Electric service reliability varies between campgrounds. One Lake Morena visitor noted: "The electric also would surge causing my LED lights to flicker." Bringing a surge protector is advisable for RVs using electric hookups at the area campgrounds.

Quiet time expectations: For those seeking peace away from urban areas, Jessica M. suggests about Lake Morena: "We spent a weekend here, and so did many families and dogs and hikers and bikers. The park was not full when we arrived, and did fill up on Friday evening... We found the spaces to be not private enough, and would avoid coming back on a weekend." Weekday visits often provide a quieter experience for RVers traveling with pets.
