Best Dog-Friendly Camping near Bonita, CA

Sweetwater Summit Regional Park accommodates pets at all campsites with a $1 nightly fee per animal. The park provides partial and full hookup sites for both tent and RV camping, with concrete pads and some shaded areas in the south loop. Leashed pets are welcome throughout the camping areas and on designated trails, though owners should be prepared for ants at some sites. San Diego Metro KOA in nearby Chula Vista also welcomes pets with designated walking areas and accepts dogs in their cabin accommodations. Lake Jennings, Santee Lakes Recreation Preserve, and Thousand Trails Pio Pico all offer pet-friendly camping options within 20 minutes of Bonita. Campers report the south loop sites 1-60 offer the most shade for pets during hot weather.

Several hiking trails near the campgrounds accommodate leashed dogs, providing exercise opportunities during your stay. Sweetwater's trail system connects directly to the campground, allowing convenient access for dog walks without driving elsewhere. Dog owners should be aware of coyotes in the area and maintain close supervision of pets, especially at dawn and dusk. Diatomaceous earth helps control ants around tent sites and RV touch points. The campgrounds are conveniently located near urban amenities, with pet supply stores and veterinary services within a 7-minute drive. The continuous breeze at Sweetwater Summit helps moderate temperatures for pets during summer months, but afternoon shade is limited in the north loop sections.

    Circle RV Resort

It’s OK for a couple weeks

Amenities isn’t all that great when they’re not maintained well. Gym has damaged equipment, pool has lose hand rails and heated pool is filthy. Pool furniture is outdated, broken and dirty. They will only play country music at the pool. The shower house looks like it has recently been updated but smells and has mold growing already. They do not allow any kind of camper except big rigs/trailers. They have a “dog park”, which is very small and smell horrendous due to there only being fake plastic grass. Most owners will also not clean up after their pets, so you or your dog may step into feces quite often there. RV park is between highway and main road - no quiet found here. Rules on what you’re allowed to put up for shade will vary depending on how much management likes you there. All in all an Ok place if you aren’t actually spending you time there.

    Admiral Baker RV Park

Beautiful clean RV park within a park

RV spots are arranged in a horseshoe around a park with a playground. Sites on outside of horseshoe have to walk between interior sites to get to the park, bathrooms and laundry. Wi-Fi is good enough to work remotely. We didn’t try streaming.

Adjacent to the RV park are sports fields, picnic areas and a golf course.

The dog park is nice and clean and is reserved for RV park guests. The pool is beautiful and has a two-story tall slide. The pool is closed this summer and next (2022-23) but is normally open Memorial Day to Labor Day.

RV park is open to military and retired military.

    Oceanside RV Resort

For tent campers - pretty solid place for a quick couple stays

First, the campsite has the MOST CLEANEST restroom and shower booths I have ever visited for tent camping. This is no doubt that for those folks who are needed for good built qaulity toiletery, this will be your location.

    For the down sides;

    1. The trains - There is a rail right behind the tent sites so if you are looking for the tent sites with quiet location: PLEASE STAY AWAY from here. the trains do not operate from around 10 pm, back on operating starting from 5 am.

    2. for T1 tent site, BE AWARE that there is a dog park RIGHT next to the tent site: there will be a urine odor all over the place.

    3. If you are planning on cooking, just be aware that there is no proper location to do a dish wash. You would need some sort of wipes to do.

Amazing resort style amenities. Spacious sites

People are complaining about freeway noise, we stayed in site 3 (the closest site to the freeway) and it was quiet as a mouse from inside our (insulated) RV. Amazing amenities. Dog park, pool, clubhouse. We loved site 3 so close to the amenities and restrooms. Overall amazing stay

    Loomerland

    Excellent little getaway with animals!

Our family of 3 just left the campground this morning, and we had a great time during our 1 night stay.  To find it, just plug the GPS coordinates into Google maps and follow the instructions.  It’s fairly primitive (outhouse and water spigot), but the sky is clear and the whole place is very serene with trees and nature. They have several protective, very human-friendly dogs on the property.  They also open the barn around 0800 and allow campers to pet the rabbits, chickens, cats, pigs, turkey, ducks, and even feed the goats.  Sites have campfire rings (bring your own wood), picnic table, and a couple Adirondack style chairs.  The staff is also very friendly and informative.  We will certainly be back.

Guide to Bonita

Camping options for pet owners near Bonita, California range from urban parks with full hookups to more rustic settings in the surrounding areas. Located at about 180 feet above sea level in San Diego County, Bonita experiences a mild Mediterranean climate with average temperatures between 58°F in winter and 78°F in summer. The region's low rainfall makes it suitable for camping year-round, though summer camping requires preparation for occasional heat waves.

What to do

Fishing at small ponds: Lake Jennings provides fishing opportunities for campers with pets. "My moms company has a party here every year, we take my nephews fishing here almost twice a month. It's a great place to forget about reality," notes one visitor to Lake Jennings.

Hiking accessible trails: Dos Picos County Park offers hiking trails suitable for pet owners. A camper mentions, "There's a tranquil pond, nice hiking trails, places for kids to play…. Just a fantastic option close to home for locals and well worth consideration for visitors to the area." Dos Picos County Park combines natural settings with convenient access.

Water activities with pets: Campland on the Bay allows pets near water recreation areas. "We've tent camped and brought our 5th wheel. It's a beautiful location with lots of amenities. Many people don't know about the dog park, which is quite large!" The park offers both land and water activities for pet owners.

What campers like

Clean facilities and layouts: Santee Lakes Recreation Preserve maintains clean shower and bathroom facilities. "This is such a nice place to camp. Lots of birds and great fishing. Although you can see housing and it's not in a remote area, it is still quiet and peaceful," reports a visitor to Santee Lakes Recreation Preserve.

Urban accessibility: San Diego Metro KOA offers pet-friendly camping with city convenience. "This is plopped right in the middle of a busy suburban area but you could never tell once you're inside! It feels like you're miles and miles away from anything!" One camper at San Diego Metro KOA appreciates this balance.

Space between sites: Silver Strand State Beach provides adequate separation in some areas. "The spaces are big I generally stay for 2 to 5 days bring supplies no stores near by and they lock the gate so if you go for a evening in town you will be walking back from the gate," explains a camper about site layouts at the beach location.

What you should know

Cell service varies: Thousand Trails Pio Pico has limited connectivity. "I didn't get any TV reception, but others did. I didn't have a powered antenna, but I do now. The internet was slow and iffy. They said they were working on it. I got to see a few shows on Netflix, Hulu, YouTube... No cell service at all," notes a camper at Thousand Trails Pio Pico.

Seasonal pest management: Several campgrounds report ant issues during warmer months. At Santee Lakes, one camper mentions: "Only problem was the ants we encountered (first time ever) and had to run over to the local Lowe's to purchase some DE to spread around the anchor points and connections."

Site reservation timing: Popular pet-friendly sites book quickly. "Something this nice you have to reserve at least 6 months ahead for nicest tree sites. Many sites (200+) but very popular," advises a visitor about planning ahead for pet-friendly camping near Bonita.

Tips for camping with families

Plan for water activities: Fiddlers Cove RV Park offers water recreation for families with pets. "Kayak, boat, SUP available for rental. Easy access to all of San Diego," notes a visitor to Fiddlers Cove RV Park, highlighting equipment rental options.

Choose shaded sites: For summer camping with pets, seek tree-covered areas. "We stay there in the off season. Love being there the spaces are big," mentions a camper about strategic timing and site selection for comfort.

Check pet restrictions: Some campgrounds limit pet access to certain areas or trails. "Leashed pets are welcome throughout the camping areas and on designated trails," confirms a regular camper familiar with pet policies in the region.

Tips from RVers

Level sites matter: Look for concrete pads for easier setup. "Great pull thru sites on level concrete pads. Full hookups. Many hiking trails and bicycle trails," reports an RVer at Sweetwater Summit Regional Park.

Utility connections: Check hookup types before booking. "This gets yo one motor vehicle. Additional vehicles are $4 per night. There is a $1 pet fee, per pet," notes a camper about the specific costs associated with pets and additional vehicles.

Noise considerations: Some campgrounds experience traffic or airport noise. "It's really just a parking lot with electric and water. But it's on the beach so you really can't complain too much," explains a realistic reviewer about balancing location benefits against noise at waterfront camping areas.
