Best Dispersed Camping near John D. Rockefeller Jr. Memorial Parkway
Grassy Lake Road off John D. Rockefeller Jr. Memorial Parkway provides free dispersed camping options between Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks. The road offers eight designated camping areas along the Snake River, with each area containing between one and four individual sites. These primitive campsites include amenities uncommon for dispersed camping: vault toilets, trash cans, bear boxes, picnic tables, and fire rings. The gravel road is generally well-maintained but washboarded in sections.
Campsites 1-5 are more open with river access, while sites 6-8 are located in denser forest approximately seven miles down the road. According to one visitor, "If you keep driving past camp #8 you enter the National Forest and you can pretty much camp at any turnout you like." Competition for these sites is intense during summer months, with many filling by early afternoon. One camper noted, "Ranking down because we couldn't actually stay here. Arrived at 3pm on a July Tuesday and there were no spots left." The road is typically closed during winter and spring months, often reopening in mid-June. Mosquitoes can be problematic, particularly at forested sites.
