Best Cabin Camping near John D. Rockefeller Jr. Memorial Parkway

CAMPER SUMMARY PRESENTED BYFord

Rustic cabins provide overnight shelter between Grand Teton and Yellowstone National Parks at several locations within John D. Rockefeller Jr. Memorial Parkway. Headwaters Campground at Flagg Ranch offers basic non-electric cabins with full-sized bunk beds, a desk, dresser, and outside picnic tables with fire rings. Grand Teton Climbers' Ranch provides simple cabin accommodations with shared toilet facilities. Colter Bay Tent Village features cabin rentals with water access but no electric hookups. "Cutest little non-electric cabin. Included full size bunk bed, desk. Plenty of space for your things. Bathrooms were clean, showers available, outlets available in bathrooms for blow dryers," notes one visitor.

Reservations are essential for all cabin accommodations, particularly during peak summer months from May through October. Headwaters Campground cabins must be booked months in advance, with availability limited between June 1 and October 1. Most cabins accommodate 2-4 people with bunk-style sleeping arrangements. Pets are permitted at Headwaters and several other cabin locations, though policies vary by property. According to a camper, "We arrived after a long day of traveling and it was wet and cold outside, so we were very happy to have a cabin waiting for us. We reserved it in May for a July trip." KOA-style cabins can be found at Yellowstone Park West Gate KOA Holiday with more amenities than wilderness cabins.

Cabin guests should bring their own bedding, towels, and toiletries as these items are typically not provided. Cooking facilities vary significantly between properties - some have no cooking equipment while others provide fire rings outside cabins. On-site convenience stores at locations like Headwaters Lodge offer basic groceries, though prices run higher than in surrounding towns. "Pricing at the grocery store and convenience store a bit high, $16 total for s'mores, so shop before," advises one review. Most cabins lack electricity, refrigeration, and running water, requiring guests to use nearby bathroom facilities. Bear-resistant storage lockers are provided at many sites for food storage due to active wildlife in the area.

Headwaters Campground at Flagg Ranch — John D. Rockefeller, Jr., Memorial Parkway

    Cutest little cabins

We booked a cute little cabin, even though we had a van and tents because is looked like a good experience. We had bunk beds, with a desk and chairs. Outside we had a picnic table with a fire ring. Clean sites and cabin, showers, and restroom. There are washing machines on site. I would camp her again and stay in another cabin.

Yellowstone Park / West Gate KOA Holiday

    My Home away from Home

Several years (10) ago I booked this KOA to travel with friends and visit Yellowstone.  They all backed out, and it ended up being an incredible trip with my Mom.  So much so that we are having our 11th trip this year.  I am also bringing my husband separately for his first time.

This KOA is well kept, clean, spacious, plenty of fun things to do, the staff is courteous.  And I love the different options that you have for staying there.  Tents, RV's, and Cabins.  The general store is great if you forget anything.  And the BBQ is wonderful for breakfast or dinner!

The accommodations are perfect.  We have stayed in tents and cabins.  I love that each site has a picnic table, and fire pit.  If you choose a cabin, it consists of beds, a porch swing, and a space heater.  Unless you choose to upgrade (which we have done in the past as well).  Then you have a kitchenette and bathroom/shower.

    Yellowstone Cabins and RV Park

Fine stay, more geared toward the cabins

Nothing wrong with this stay, although I wouldn’t call this a “campground.” It’s a small and tight rental cabin property that has a few slots for RV hook up.

It’s tight but as long as your just looking for a place to drop or unhitch this one is fine.

There is some shade with trees and each spot has a picnic table. It’s basic but it will do!

They are definitely more focused on the cabin rentals here. They looked really nice too, newly built and rustic.

Yellowstone Park / West Gate KOA Holiday

    TERRIBLE MANAGEMENT, DON'T STAY!!

Reserved a cabin at KOA in West Yellowstone; it had been raining, the area in front of our cabin was a lake!!    Our fire pit and picnic table were completely underwater.   We went to office & they assured us they would send someone over to take a look.   They threw down some boards to walk on, but fire pit was still underwater & we would have to navigate those boards to go to the restroom in the middle of the night!

We went to the office again & asked if there was another cabin for us to move to; the manager said there was but it would be $100 upgrade!!   We asked if he would be negotiable as our cabin wasn't safe.   The manager kicked our family of 5 out, with the words.....good luck finding another place to stay in West Yellowstone this time of year!!    Luckily, we found, Hibernation Station in town - lovely place, fully furnished cabins with bathrooms.   Why anyone would stay at the crappy KOA cabins 7 miles out of town when you can stay at nicely furnish Hibernation Station cabins with bedding, private bathroom, fully equiped ktichen, walking distance to restaurants & wonderful management.    Shame on KOA for not ensuring better management.

Headwaters Campground at Flagg Ranch — John D. Rockefeller, Jr., Memorial Parkway

    Perfect Location

Great spot on the outskirts of both Grand Teton and Yellowstone Parks. we stayed in a cabin which was very cozy and clean. A double bunk beds with a mattress, a desk and chairs and dresser. warm showers and bathrooms within walking distance. A hiking trail that follows snake river is not that far from ranch. Pricing at the grocery store and convenience store a bit high, $16 total for s’mores, so shop before. Activities available for youth and adults.

Headwaters Campground at Flagg Ranch — John D. Rockefeller, Jr., Memorial Parkway

Peaceful and close to Snake River

HeadWaters Rv campground is located in the perfect place right between Yellowstone and The Tetons. Perfect for exploring both Parks. The cell service is pretty spotty, but it’s great to just put down your phone and enjoy your surroundings. It is only 5 minutes walk from the campground to Snake River access. Fires are allowed at this campground. There are Rv, tent, and cabins to stay at. The cabins in the camp area are small but have full sized bunk beds and a desk and dresser. These cabins do not have water or electricity, but there are other cabins with power up the road. The tent and Rv spots are on gravel with lots of shade, a picnic table, and fire ring. Rv sites are Electric and water. There are so many activities to do. Along with the activities they have every day there is horse riding, guided fly fishing, hiking trails for everyone, bus tours, jr. rancher classes and so much more Also on site at the campground is a dish washing area next to the clean bathrooms and showers. There is a propane fill, fresh water fill, restaurant, gift shop, ATM machine, gas station, and bear boxes. I would definitely recommend this campground for any duration of trip.

Mary Mountain Backcountry Patrol Cabin — Yellowstone National Park

    Stunning

I camped here twice last summer when I worked in the park as a wildlife research technician studying bats (This cabin may only be available for park staff). The hike in is best done as a through hike with a planned pick up on the other side. The trail is hard to follow in some areas. Starts out flat then you go up Mary Mountain where the cabin is located. The Mary mountain cabin is small but has enough bedding for up to 5 or 6 people. It has bunk beds, cots, tons of sleeping bags and pads. There is a cute porch, pic nic table, fire pit, and a double seated outhouse. Locks up nicely as there are definitely bears in the area. The small lake in front of the cabin is cold and clear. One of my favorite places in the park!

Headwaters Campground at Flagg Ranch — John D. Rockefeller, Jr., Memorial Parkway

Close quarters but lots of amenities

We only stayed here for one night but enjoyed it. We were in one of the rustic little cabins which consisted of a double bunk bed, table with 2 chairs, small garbage can, and lantern. All the sites were close together but if you’re in the Tetons, you probably won’t be spending much time just hanging out at camp. There is coin operated laundry, a beautiful lodge with a bistro and full restaurant, plus a little gas station/grocery. Would recommend if you’re not looking for peace and quiet!

Colter Bay Tent Village at Colter Bay Village — Grand Teton National Park

    Just Fantastic

After almost 10 back to back individual nights at campgrounds, it was nice to be able to have two back to back nights in a tent cabin.  The cabins are great with two wood walls, two canvas tent walls and roof, four drop down bunks and a nice potbelly stove.  The outside area is very nice with a table, fire ring and bear box.  Parking for the tent was directly next to the cabin and outdoor pad.

The only drawback is that the tent cabins are quite close to each other.  The family in the tent next to mine was very nice, but also quite loud.  The area luckily was quiet after 10pm.

The campground village itself was very nice, with all sorts of shopping and food options.  Since I arrived at the campground around 4pm I quickly unloaded my gear into the cabin. Instead of cooking I grabbed a bite to eat and a six pack of local beer, and headed over to a spot on Jackson Lake to have a sunset dinner.  The campground location is perfect to get out and explore.

The cabin bunks are comfortable, if not a bit loud when sleeping and moving around.  I woke myself several times with chains making noise.  After the third time, I grabbed a bottle of bike chain lubricant and did some work to make them quiet.  it worked and the rest of the night was quite peaceful.

Mornings are definitely busy in the village.  I was up around 7am and rode my bike to the General Store to grab a coffee.  I took a little ride down to the lake and drank my coffee in a quiet spot that was perfect for meditation.  I then rode back to my site and grabbed my toiletries and rode back to the Launderette/Shower.  They had a little line to get a shower stall, but it moved quickly.  The cost was $5 and it was well worth it for the ability to take a nice long uninterrupted shower.

I spent the day exploring Jackson and over into the Teton Valley and Driggs/Victor.  I returned later in the afternoon and grabbed a bite from John Colter's Ranch House .  The second night was much more quiet and peaceful with the stars shining bright.

My only qualms about the site were about how close you are to other cabins and the noise.  I would still love to stay here again.

Guide to John D. Rockefeller Jr. Memorial Parkway

Camping cabins near John D. Rockefeller Jr. Memorial Parkway sit at elevations between 6,500-7,800 feet, creating cool summer nights even during peak season. The parkway's position between Grand Teton and Yellowstone National Parks means cabin accommodations face high demand year-round, with winter temperatures frequently dropping below freezing. Most cabins in this region remain open from late May through early October due to seasonal snowfall patterns.

What to do

Boat rentals at Jackson Lake: The shoreline near Colter Bay Tent Village offers water activities with mountain views. "Great Hiking, Great Scenery," notes one visitor to Colter Bay, while another mentions "Jackson Lake Lodge has some fabulous views out the back on its balcony."

Wildlife viewing from cabins: The area between the parks serves as a wildlife corridor for bears, moose, and other animals. At Henrys Lake State Park Campground, one guest reports, "We also saw a moose swim across the lake, get up on shore and run through the campground. So awesome!"

Stargazing after dark: The limited light pollution creates ideal night sky viewing. "It is away from everything so you can see lots of stars at night," according to a visitor at Headwaters Lodge, while Henrys Lake State Park cabins offer similar dark sky access.

What campers like

Location between parks: The proximity to both national parks creates a strategic base camp. "We really enjoyed the location — smack between Grand Teton and Yellowstone. Campground is quiet, beautiful, and with good amenities," says one reviewer of Headwaters Campground at Flagg Ranch.

Clean facilities: The maintained bathrooms and showers receive consistent praise. According to a Canyon Campground visitor, "We have a nice 20 ft RV site for our RTT and we enjoyed the bear boxes and campfire rings at our spot. This was well centrally located and had some great showers."

Escape from weather: Cabins provide shelter during unpredictable mountain conditions. "This campground worked as it was the busy season but was not ideal. The sites were not on even ground but we made it work. It was in a good location for exploring the park," notes one Canyon Campground user about the importance of proper shelter.

What you should know

Advanced planning required: Reservation windows open months before peak season. One Yellowstone Park / West Gate KOA Holiday visitor advises, "Staff is always friendly and helpful. Lots of activities for the kids. Lots of trees, clean, relaxing. We have been there 3 times twice as tent campers and once as RV camper."

Bear-safe practices: All food must be stored properly in provided lockers. A camper from Headwaters notes, "They ask to clean up your site each evening and put grill and coolers away so as to not attract the bears."

Limited connectivity: Cell service ranges from spotty to nonexistent at most cabin locations. One guest mentions, "Very limited Wi-fi that had to be accessed at the lodge reception area. No cell phone service. A courtesy phone is available at the lodge reception desk."

Tips for camping with families

Indoor pool options: Some nearby lodges offer indoor swimming for rainy days. A Yellowstone Park KOA reviewer reports, "This KOA is very well kept. Staff are extremely helpful. Camp sites are clean and well kept. Having this campground nearby Yellowstone is a perfect location for a place with all the amenities."

Kid-friendly amenities: Look for cabins with playgrounds or activity centers. At Fireside Resort at Jackson Hole, visitors appreciate the balance of comfort and access: "We stayed here 4 nights and it has been great! Not all the sites have water and sewer, but everything has electric. It's clean and the service is amazing."

Educational programs: Ranger-led activities offer learning opportunities for children. "The location was great for exploring the park," notes a family at Canyon, highlighting the educational value of staying close to park activities.

Tips from RVers

Limited hookups: Many cabin areas have restricted RV access or services. According to one reviewer at Henrys Lake State Park, "Make reservations if possible. Fills up fast. GREAT fishing from shore or boat. There is one grassy area for tents and smaller rv's and a new section that will accommodate all sizes."

Dump station locations: Plan your waste management schedule accordingly. "It's FHU which was nice. The bath houses were nice and centrally located. There is a sink outside the bathhouse for dishes for tenters," notes a Headwaters Campground visitor.

Weather preparations: High elevation means wide temperature swings between day and night. "We took a nice ride out Grassy Lake Road from the ranch. The area near the ranch was burned in the 2016 wildfires so you will see lots of burned trees," explains a visitor, highlighting the need to prepare for changing conditions.
