Best Campgrounds near Bonham, TX

Campgrounds near Bonham, Texas range from state parks to national grasslands, offering a mix of amenities and environments for outdoor enthusiasts. Lake Bonham Recreation Area and Bonham State Park provide established camping areas with water access, while the Caddo-LBJ National Grasslands feature more primitive camping options at sites like West Lake Crockett and Coffee Mill Lake Recreation Area. Most campgrounds accommodate tent camping, with select locations offering RV hookups, cabins, or glamping experiences within a 30-minute drive of Bonham.

Camping areas throughout the region maintain varying levels of development, from the well-maintained Bonham State Park with electricity and showers to more rustic options in the national grasslands. Many campgrounds feature lakefront access with boat ramps, fishing piers, and swimming areas, particularly appealing during warmer months. The terrain is generally flat with partial tree coverage, providing some shade at select sites. "Bonham is a small but uncrowded park. Lovely and clean fresh water lake. Tent campsites are well sheltered by trees," notes one visitor about Lake Bonham Recreation Area.

Several campgrounds in the area feature water access as a primary attraction, with fishing being particularly popular at Lake Crockett and Coffee Mill Lake. Mixed-use campgrounds like Hidden Grove RV Resort offer paved sites with amenities for longer stays, while the national grasslands provide more secluded experiences. A camper at West Lake Crockett described it as "perfect for tents, vans, teardrop/pop-up/truck campers" with "each site having a fire ring, grill, and table." Public lands campgrounds typically cost $4-6 per night, while state parks and private RV parks charge more but offer additional amenities. Cell service varies significantly between locations, with some national grasslands sites providing a true disconnect from technology while others maintain surprisingly strong coverage for remote work.

    Eisenhower State Park Campground

Nice park overall. Clean and secure.

I’ve been here several times over the last few years (latest oct 2025). I like the hiking trails and the amazing beauty of the outdoors. The lake is pretty and probably fun to fish or boat on. I didn’t do this while I was there. There is a small onsite store. The roads are maintained and paved and the campsites are very nice sized with long parking spots for campers. Some tent sites have power and some even have large screen shelters. The park is monitored by state police throughout the day and night and that is good to keep the trouble away.

    Dallas-Northeast Campground

    Nice place to stop

Clean facilities and great staff. People were working on new features and cleaning all the time. We had lots of laundry to do, and they have plenty of modern machines. A nice pond to walk around.

Buggy Whip Equestrian Campground — Cooper Lake State Park South Sulphur Unit

    A horse lover's campground

We camped for 2 weeks in this campground, site 111, and with the exception of Labor Day weekend, we had the entire campground mostly to ourselves! Shady, large sites with electric and water. Large area in the middle of the campground with lovely trees and a few picnic tables. Nice equestrian/pedestrian trails. Clean and well-maintained restroom/shower facility as you come into this campground. The rangers made their rounds at least twice a day.

Bright Star Campground — Cooper Lake State Park South Sulphur Unit

Nice, very quiet, heavily wooded CG

We have a 36 ft Class A with a Cherokee Trailhawk tow and stayed in site 25 for 1 night in early September. The CG is clean, well maintained. The CG roads are paved, as are the sites. The site pads themselves are concrete and most looked to be fairly level, but a few had a bit of slope. Most of the sites were fairly well spaced. The CG, at least on Sunday evening, was very quiet and peaceful. There were only 2 other campers while we were there, one of them the Park Host. Our site, 25, was a pull-through, but the center of it had about 4 inches of mud from a recent rain, otherwise it would just be 4 inches of dirt. A few of the back-in sites had similar situations at the junction with the road.

AT&T coverage was pitiful, with only 1 bar of LTE service and speeds up to 0.1 MB/s. We had a clear view to the N from the side of the site, so Starlink was fine with speeds up to 16 MB/s.

    Beautiful quiet oasis

You can tell this is a good place to stay as soon as you pull in the drive. Great roads, very large sites, your choice pull in paved or gravel, back in or lake side. All spots have a paved patio. The owners are so nice and make you feel at home. We stayed an extra night.

    Patriot RV Park

    Comfortable stay

Stayed for two months for my husband's work. Park manager, Becky, was helpful and nice. They have a saltwater pool, dog park, laundry room, shower/bathrooms, trees/landscaping and access to a boat ramp. Some sites are a bit tight. We were in the top part of the campground and had no issues with it being real wet. Have heard that the lower area does have pooling of water with heavy rain. It does go away quickly, but should be aware of this if you have lots of outside things or a pet. Would stay here again.

    The Retreat at Shady Creek

    Awesome RV resort in town

We normally don't do RV resorts, but this one is awesome. The sites are fairly spacious, especially compared to other RV resorts. Big rig friendly with many different style spots to choose from. We always choose the fence line back in sites, and they always come with plenty of grass to walk the dogs. The fence backs up to residential, but that doesn't bother us. Even the back in sites are plenty spacious for a big rig and your tow vehicle and another vehicle. The park is very roomy and easy to navigate and park.

The staff are always so nice and they make late check in a breeze, which we appreciate after a long, tiring day of towing. This RV resort is the only place we've ever stayed in that allows RV washing! For full-time RVers, that's pretty huge. They also have a mail room if you need to receive a package on the road.

The resort is split up into two areas by the road, the Retreat area is more resort like and caters to short term stays, while the other half has long term stays. They both look nice and are clean and beautiful. We will continue to visit every time we pass through the area.

Guide to Bonham

Camping spots near Bonham, Texas exist mainly within state parks and national grasslands where visitors find shaded campsites along lakeshores. This north Texas region sits at approximately 700 feet elevation with typical hot summers and mild winters. Cell service varies throughout the area, with surprising coverage at some remote locations allowing remote work capabilities.

What to do

Fishing opportunities: At Coffee Mill Lake Recreation Area, visitors find productive waters for various species. "Great bass fishing" is highlighted by Janet J., while other lakes in the area offer similar experiences.

Hiking trails: Bonham State Park features hiking paths through wooded areas. "Big grassy group campsite area that looked inviting. Lots of biking/hiking trails," notes David F. The surrounding terrain provides relatively flat routes suitable for most ability levels.

Kayaking and boating: Hidden Grove RV Resort offers water access with "two different trails to walk on." At other area lakes, campers bring watercraft for day use. Most lake-adjacent campgrounds include boat ramps for easy water access.

What campers like

Secluded camping: The West Lake Crockett area provides isolation from urban environments. As Jeff D. describes: "No tv no cell service just us and the stars lol... WE LOVE THIS 10 OR 11 SPOTS TO CAMP."

Affordable rates: Public lands camping costs significantly less than private alternatives. National grassland campgrounds charge nominal fees, as Izzy T. notes about West Lake Crockett: "First come, first serve - easy pay on recreation.gov. Scan the QR code, half off with America the Beautiful pass."

Stargazing: Clear night skies away from city lights create optimal star viewing conditions. Rick G. mentions that Coffee Mill Lake "has decent views of the stars especially looking north," making astronomy activities popular during cloudless nights.

What you should know

Limited services: Most grassland campgrounds have minimal facilities. At Bois D' Arc Trailhead Campground, Izzy T. reports: "Water, tables, and fire pits at every site... Pit toilets on sites, no trash."

Weather considerations: Summer temperatures regularly exceed 90°F with high humidity. Fall through spring offers milder conditions. Micah W. notes about Coffee Mill Lake: "My only concern would be the bugs if it is hot weather. The campground is close to the lake, and I can see mosquitoes being an issue in the summer."

Cell connectivity: Service varies dramatically between locations. At West Lake Crockett, Izzy T. reports "Full bars of 5G on T-Mobile, 300/35 mbps dl/ul," while other nearby sites have limited or no connectivity.

Tips for camping with families

Swimming areas: Bonham State Park Campground offers designated swimming zones with relatively shallow entry points. "A very small park with a small lake, but it is well shaded well maintained," reports Robert H.

Educational activities: Several parks offer ranger-led programs during peak seasons. The grasslands contain diverse wildlife viewing opportunities for children.

Safety considerations: Water safety remains important, particularly at lakes. Natalie S. advises campers to "Watch out for the water moccasins at night" at lake areas, reminding families to use flashlights after dark and check shoes/gear.

Tips from RVers

Site selection: Eisenhower State Park Campground provides well-developed RV accommodations. "Most camp sites are shaded with pull through sites full hook ups, well maintained and quiet," according to Robert H.

Hookup availability: Not all campgrounds offer electric or water connections. Chris P. notes about Bonham State Park: "Beautiful old Texas State Park with all the hookups and things you need for a nice time. Level sites all with great water views close to everything."

Access roads: Some campgrounds have narrow entry roads. At the Bois D' Arc Trailhead, Izzy T. observes: "Plenty of space for big rigs. Pit toilets on sites, no trash," making it suitable for larger vehicles despite the primitive amenities.
