Camping near Commerce, Texas ranges from waterfront tent sites and RV hookups to private secluded sites, centered primarily around Cooper Lake State Park within a 30-minute drive of town. The South Sulphur Unit features several campgrounds including Deer Haven, Bright Star, and Oak Grove with waterfront sites that accommodate tents and RVs, while the Doctors Creek Unit on the northern shore provides Liberty Grove Campground with cabin options and lakeside campsites. Private alternatives like Sleep Under The Pecan Trees offer more intimate settings with 12 secluded sites, while RV-specific parks such as Stinson RV Park in Campbell and East Texas RV Park in Greenville cater to travelers seeking full hookup accommodations.

Campground access throughout the region remains open year-round, though summer temperatures regularly exceed 90°F, making spring and fall the preferred camping seasons. Most lakeside sites require advance reservations through the Texas Parks & Wildlife Department reservation system, especially during weekends. "The sites were level and shaded by a beautiful, mature oak tree. I could walk from the pad to the lake. It would be a great site to put out a kayak," noted one camper about their experience at Cooper Lake State Park. Cell phone coverage varies by carrier throughout the area, with limited service in some campground loops. Many campgrounds offer basic amenities such as restrooms, showers, and picnic tables, while more developed sites provide electric and water hookups.

Lakefront access represents the primary draw for campers visiting the Commerce area, with sites offering direct water views commanding the highest demand. Several campgrounds feature shared fishing piers, boat ramps, and swimming areas that enhance the outdoor experience. As one visitor mentioned, "Each site has unobstructed lake view... Small pier shared by every two campsites." Wildlife observation opportunities abound, with deer commonly spotted throughout Cooper Lake State Park's wooded areas. Noise levels generally remain low during weekdays, though weekend boating activity can create busier conditions on the lake. The proximity to Dallas-Fort Worth (under two hours) makes these campgrounds popular weekend destinations for metropolitan residents seeking short getaways, resulting in higher occupancy from Friday through Sunday during warmer months.

      COE Lavon Lake Lavonia

      Peaceful Waterfront Campground

Like most of our stops, we only spent one night here, but it was a really nice campground. The sites are large, and being right by the water makes the whole place feel peaceful and relaxing. A big plus was the covered picnic tables and benches at each site, which made it much more comfortable to eat outside without sitting in the direct sun. The only small downside was the bathhouse. It was nice to have your own private bathroom with both a toilet and a shower, but the shower only produced a small stream of water with fairly low pressure. Upgrading the showerheads would definitely improve the experience. It's also worth knowing that you can't access the campground after 10 PM, apparently not even with an access code. Other than those minor issues, this is a really beautiful campground and a great place to stay.

      Lake Quitman West Dam

      Lake Views and Pine Trees

PSA: THERE ARE PORTA POTTIES — you do not need to dig a cat hole, I repeat there are bathrooms; not pretty by any means but they are there. The area we were camped at had a lot of trash on the ground. Looks like some of the garbage cans haven’t been changed/cleaned out in weeks. Critters got into the garbage too. Other than that, it’s quiet, plenty of spots to park and a great spot for fishing. Very pretty views. Seems like a semi-busy park for locals.

      South Sulphur Campground

      Wooded, well spaced sites

Staying in site 11, with access to the lake (fun for kids, fishing). The site is HUGE! Woke to the sounds of birds. Lots of shade and privacy. Site 11 is next to overflow parking but its not a big deal. All the sites up against the lake looked great! The bathrooms are fine, 1 shared between two loops-slightly far walk. But that wasn't an issue for us. There are a few short miles worth of trails we plan to walk-they appear to be wooded walking trails. All in all this place is a hidden gem if you want to get into nature with the luxury of electric and water, and showers/flushing toilets. Also, I have 3 bars of service (AT&T)

      Sugar Hill RV Resort

Great North Texas Spot to Explore

About 45minutes north of Dallas which makes easy entry and exit. Very clean amenities, spacious sites, better than average dog park, good amount of grass and walking trails around. Staff was friendly and accommodating. Even had a small fitness room that will work in a pinch.

      Whispering Woods of Texas

      Glamping it in Nature

We are not much into camping but love the outdoors.  We loved the Whispering Woods vibe as it gave us the comforts of home (bathroom, kitchen, shower, comfy bed) yet in an outdoor setting.  Lots of options to stay from a Boho tent, Airstream and other types of tents making it a perfect place for a family reunion or several families to stay.  We appreciated the details of coffee in our Airstream and sitting on the patio early morning listening to the birds chirping.  The air is fresher there and the stars, wow, I forgot how many there actually are.  Fire pit was great for conversation, relaxing and peaceful.  We highly recommend this place to get recharged and only 90 min from our home in Frisco, TX.

      Wind Point Park

      Beautiful

Great environment & friendly staff. My only complaint is rowdy neighbors almost fist fighting drunk a site over. Children were present and foul language was being used and foul music was being played. I am young only 28 and the music was not family friendly. I have no kids but others nearby did. Other than the certain members on that site everything was great.

      Lake Quitman West Dam

      Beautiful on water camp spots

Easy to find. Lots of people out here camping. Several car / tent combos, class B rigs, and vans. Was serenaded by cows. There are porta poties and trash barrels around the campsite. Beautiful views of the water. Couldn't hear nearby road. Could fit a small (<20 ft) travel trailer in here. Has a main loop road you can drive around or walk. I saw a couple doing the walk. Pretty clean spot. Could do several days here easily. Att 5G, 1-2 bars. Could surf the Web.

    Guide to Commerce

Cooper Lake dominates the camping landscape near Commerce, Texas, with its 19,300-acre reservoir offering water-based recreation opportunities about 30 minutes from town. The lake extends across both Hopkins and Delta counties with elevation ranging between 420-440 feet. Winter temperatures typically stay above freezing with occasional cold snaps, while summer camping requires preparation for heat and humidity.

    What to do

Kayak fishing opportunities: Access the waters at Liberty Grove Campground at Cooper Lake State Park Doctors Creek Unit where the concrete pads provide a convenient base for water activities. "We stayed at spot 18, it was a quick walk to the lake and had the most beautiful wooded view from the campsite," notes Christina H., highlighting the ease of water access.

Hiking trail exploration: Several trails wind through the park system with varying difficulty levels. "There are a lot of great hiking trails with wildlife including deer, coyotes, armadillos, and butterflies," mentions David R. about Deer Haven Campground. The trails are well-maintained and range from short half-mile loops to longer routes through wooded areas.

Wildlife encounters: Feed horses by hand at Sleep Under The Pecan Trees, a private 100-acre camping area. "Wild, yet docile horses will approach you. You can pet them and feed them by hand. Tall trees and gorgeous campsites. Donkeys hee-hawing, birds singing, and fire flies glowing," describes Aaron W. The property features scattered ponds throughout, offering additional wildlife viewing areas.

    What campers like

Lake visibility: Many sites throughout the Cooper Lake system provide direct water views. At Bright Star Campground, campers appreciate the well-designed sites. "We stayed at campsite 8 in the bright star loop and it was one of the best campsites I've stayed in. It was spacious and felt very private even though we knew there were other campsites close by," shares Donna D.

Well-spaced campsites: The camping areas feature concrete pads with good separation between sites in most areas. "The sites are large and fairly private. The restrooms could use some work but they do keep them clean," mentions David R. about Deer Haven Campground. This spacing creates privacy even during busier periods.

Clean facilities: Campground bathrooms and shower facilities receive regular maintenance. According to Melanie W., "The bathrooms and showers were nice and clean" at Liberty Grove Campground. Most developed campgrounds provide showers, restrooms, and access to potable water.

    What you should know

Seasonal considerations: Summer heat affects camping comfort from June through September. "We spent three hot days exploring the DR Creek Unit of Cooper Lake State Park. This is a great campground! Most of the sites are in deep shade and are very level concrete pads," explains Dude R. The shade becomes essential during summer months when temperatures regularly exceed 90°F.

Campground closures: Flooding can affect access to certain areas. Barbara T. reported in her review of Liberty Grove Campground, "Currently closed due to flooding." Always check park status before planning a trip, especially after heavy rains.

Wildlife awareness: Local wildlife requires proper food storage and awareness. "My camp site was accosted by a family of raccoons. They were not friendly and not scared of people at all. Be careful if you have young children," warns Anna S. about Oak Grove Campground. Multiple reviewers also mentioned wild hogs appearing near campsites after dark.

    Tips for camping with families

Kid-friendly activities: Several campgrounds offer designated play areas and swimming beaches. "Clean bathrooms, good playground and beach area. Cabins, RV, equestrian and tent sites," notes Danelle I. about Oak Grove Campground. The swimming areas typically include designated zones with boundary markers.

Cabin options: For families wanting more structure, cabins provide a comfortable alternative to tents. "The cabins are always clean and tidy. They have spacious bathrooms, an open living/dining area, a small kitchen and bedroom. most also have a nice back porch with picnic table," shares Tori M. about Pecan Ridge Cabins.

Animal encounters: Several campers mention wildlife viewing opportunities perfect for children. "Took my 6 year old daughter for her first camping trip and she loved it. The horses came into our camp and she was mesmerized by their size and beauty. Most amazing experience. She caught her 1st bass in the pond as well," describes Mike J. about Sleep Under The Pecan Trees.

    Tips from RVers

RV site leveling: Most RV pads throughout the region are concrete and generally level. "The CG roads are paved, as are the sites. The site pads themselves are concrete and most looked to be fairly level, but a few had a bit of slope," notes Ray & Terri F. about their stay at Bright Star Campground in a 36-foot Class A with tow vehicle.

Cell service considerations: Connectivity varies significantly between campgrounds. "AT&T coverage was pitiful, with only 1 bar of LTE service and speeds up to 0.1 MB/s," reports Ray & Terri F. Those requiring reliable internet should bring alternative connectivity solutions.

Overnight transit options: For RVers passing through the area, Stinson RV Park in Campbell provides convenient pull-through sites about 15 minutes south of Commerce. "Right off I-30, usually has spots available, very friendly people. All sites are pull-through," mentions Sharon, making this a practical option for overnight stays when passing through the region.
