Best Cabin Camping near Commerce, TX

Several state parks and private resorts within 30 miles of Commerce, Texas provide furnished cabin rentals with varying amenities. Cooper Lake State Park's Doctors Creek Unit offers cottages with heating and air conditioning, while Lake Bob Sandlin State Park features cabins with bunk beds that are popular with families. Thousand Trails Lake Tawakoni includes cabins with plumbing, though visitors have reported occasional maintenance issues. Dallas-Northeast Campground in Caddo Mills provides "cute cottages" according to one reviewer, with access to fishing opportunities. Most cabins include basic furnishings, electricity, and climate control systems. "We stayed in a cabin with bunk beds last weekend and both sites were great. We have four kids, so space was a little tight in the cabin but we made do," notes Jonathan C. about his stay at Lake Bob Sandlin State Park.

Rustic and deluxe cabin options are available throughout the region, with most requiring advance reservations, especially during summer months. Lake Bonham Recreation Area and Hidden Grove RV Resort maintain pet-friendly cabin accommodations, though specific pet policies vary by location. The cabins at Cooper Lake State Park are described as "smallish" by one reviewer but "do the job" with adequate amenities. Family-sized layouts with multiple sleeping arrangements can be found at several parks, particularly those with bunk bed configurations. According to Jamey W., "We loved fishing and hiking throughout the park but our kids loved the double bunks in our cabin. The campsite was great, right off the water and a well placed fire pit." Most locations operate year-round, though winter visitors should check for seasonal closures or limited services.

Most cabin rentals provide beds and basic furniture but require guests to bring their own linens, pillows, towels, and personal items. Kitchen facilities vary significantly between locations, from basic fire pits with grills to cabins with refrigerators and microwaves. Cooking utensils, pots, pans, and dishware are typically not provided, so visitors should pack accordingly. On-site camp stores at larger parks like Cooper Lake and Lake Bob Sandlin offer limited supplies including firewood, ice, and basic groceries. For more extensive shopping, the towns of Cooper, Bonham, and Caddo Mills have grocery stores within reasonable driving distance. Cabin guests should also consider bringing outdoor chairs, flashlights, and insect repellent, particularly during warmer months when wildlife activity increases.

Lake Bob Sandlin State Park Campground

Fun for the Second Year in a Row

We stayed in a screened shelter at Lake Bob Sandlin SP in Nov 2020 and in a cabin with bunk beds last weekend and both sites were great. We have four kids, so space was a little tight in the cabin but we made do. Clean facilities, friendly staff and beautiful rolling terrain along the lake. Would recommend!

    Beautiful Lake and campground.

We were driving through this part of Texas headed home to Oklahoma and saw the signs and needed to stop for lunch, so we decided to check this place out. This was a really beautiful park with a very nice campground that was really kept up. It had screened shelters, cottages with heat & air, shelters, nice playground, Amphitheatre, volleyball court, boat ramps, picnic areas, hiking & biking trails and a swimming area. The bathrooms and showers were nice and clean. The lake was beautiful and clear. I would absolutely recommend this place and I plan on going to stay there for a week in June.

    Lake Bonham Recreation Area

Such a Beautiful Family Friendly Campground

For our first RV camping trip of 2018 we took a short drive north to Bonham State Park right outside of Bonham, Texas. This great little Texas State Park was constructed by the CCC back in the 30's. There are plenty of things for a family to do while camping at Bonham State Park! Hiking, fishing, boat rental and best of all Smors cooked over a roaring camp fire! At every Texas Stae Park you can check out fishing equipment from the front office and you do not have to have a fishing license! Bonham State Park takes the fishing to a whole new level by providing boats so you can get out to where the fish are hiding! Bonham State Park is a great place to take the family for a long weekend of camping fun as it is just a short 45 min drive north of the DFW metroplex!

    Thousand Trails Lake Tawakoni

    Typical +

Park location is ideal Lake is beautiful many big trees! But roads are terrible, spaces are unlevel, with no uniform length! As usual for Thousand Trails never enough 50amp hookups. There was suppose to be a laundry, no laundry.! There is a propane station, but no one is licensed to operate it! That turned out to be a huge problem. Biggest ice and snow storm in 70yrs temperatures down to -2degrees below freezing for several days several inches of snow. All park water lines froze, rolling blackouts by the state, no propane available anywhere!!! Good thing my unit has a generator or I would have had to stay in my truck! I like to use Thousand Trails but they are not keeping their parks up. Park employees were helpful as they could be with very little resources. They gave me a bottle of propane from one of the cabins which was nice, and I appreciated that. They gave some to other campers, but there werent enough to go around. The park employee felt bad for not being able to help everyone! I will come back again in the summer.

    Wind Point Park

Good Camping in a Controlled Environment

If you’re looking for somewhere off the grid that is truly primitive, then this is not the place for you. If you don’t mind other people nearby, then you may enjoy your time here. Great docks for fishing. Beautiful water views, if you camp next to the water. Tent camping sites with electrical hookups are piled next to each other pretty close, so if you’re getting a tent electrical site you had better not mind getting friendly with your neighbors. Also, when it rains some of the tent electrical camp sites fill with water. However, if this happens the front office is more than willing to work with you and give you a refund or switch your site. There is a lot of wildlife roaming around - lots of deer! The primitive camp sites by the docks that overlook the water are beautiful. There is a concrete slab, picnic table, and fire pit at each primitive site. If you want to throw up a hammock, some of the primitive sites have trees that are the perfect distance apart for that - but be aware some of these trees are covered in poison ivy! The primitive sites are all close by to other types of campers, so it is never quiet and you can hear people at all hours of the day/night for the most part. Where we stayed by the water, we were next to an RV site. The other primitive camping sites also seem to be near RV sites and electrical tent sites, according to the map. If you camp near the water, it is very windy, especially at night, so make sure to bring plenty of blankets! Are you ever really on your own here: no. Are there beautiful views: yes. Is it truly primitive: no. Will you be taken care of: yes. All sites are open, with no big trees or shrubs to give privacy. You can see your neighbors and they can see you, even at the primitive sites. It would be a good place to bring a family or children for sure. I will say, the customer service at the main office is outstanding. They have anything you could think of for sale there, which is a huge plus. It is highly likely that you won’t need to drive into town for anything. Workers drive around with trash bags every day to ensure everyone is disposing of trash properly, and will give you free trash bags if you don’t have any, which is nice. All in all it depends on what you’re looking for, whether you choose to come to this camping location or not. We enjoy going here just to get away from the house and enjoy the beauty of the lake/nature for a bit. Although, I do wish there was more privacy. Everything is too close together, in my opinion.

    Thousand Trails Lake Tawakoni

    Like a COE campground

We have really enjoyed our stay here. The campground in late November is about 2/3 full with plenty of space between sites. There are some seasonal campers but there’s still many more available sites and all are great. The non RV area is not occupied and feels abandoned. The activity/community building in that area is closed indefinitely. That could be why no one is there to tent camp because there are no bathrooms nearby. But it’s an area you can retreat to for quiet solitude. We have a view of the water and wildlife across the road with no sites to impede our view. This campground has several loops that follows the little branches of the lake. There are trails that accommodate bikes, and lots of activities for families and adults in separate areas. It has all the qualities of a COE with proximity to water, trails, bathroom and laundry facilities with the additional bonus of two separate pool areas and indoor facilities for events, games, TV, or community activities that they have regularly. There are playgrounds, mini golf, ping pong, corn hole, etc. This place is really huge and spread out. Oh, also a driving range in the center. Dallas is over an hour away. So for other things to do beyond the campground you will have to drive a bit. But there’s good places to eat in Wills Point and Terrell.
