    SUMMARY PRESENTED BYT-Mobile

Several RV parks surround McKinney, Texas, with full hookup campgrounds suited to everything from weekend stays to longer-term monthly parking. Shady Creek RV Park and Storage in nearby Aubrey features 261 spacious sites with full hookups including 30/50 amp electrical service, water, and sewer connections. The sites are designed to accommodate big rigs with level gravel pads and adequate room for slide-outs. Waggin Tail Ranch RV Park in Pilot Point provides 98 full hookup sites, many with unique fenced yards for RVers traveling with pets. "The sites are fairly spacious, especially compared to other RV resorts. Big rig friendly with many different style spots to choose from," noted one guest about Shady Creek. Patriot RV Park, located east of McKinney, offers 68 sites with 30/50 amp service and is rated highly for its level concrete pads and easy access for larger motorhomes.

Cell service varies throughout the region, with most parks reporting good Verizon coverage but sometimes limited T-Mobile reception. Most RV campgrounds in the area remain open year-round, though summer temperatures can make spring and fall more comfortable seasons for RV camping. Sanitary dump stations are available at most parks, with Shady Creek, Good Shepherd RV Park, and Texas Star Resort all providing on-site dumping facilities. Pet policies are generally accommodating, with designated dog areas at several parks including a notable dog park with a pond at Waggin Tail Ranch. Propane service is limited at the parks themselves, but readily available in nearby towns. For RVers seeking monthly stays, options vary significantly - some parks like Lafon's RV Park accommodate longer-term guests, while others maintain primarily short-term availability.

      The Retreat at Shady Creek

      Awesome RV resort in town

We normally don't do RV resorts, but this one is awesome. The sites are fairly spacious, especially compared to other RV resorts. Big rig friendly with many different style spots to choose from. We always choose the fence line back in sites, and they always come with plenty of grass to walk the dogs. The fence backs up to residential, but that doesn't bother us. Even the back in sites are plenty spacious for a big rig and your tow vehicle and another vehicle. The park is very roomy and easy to navigate and park.

The staff are always so nice and they make late check in a breeze, which we appreciate after a long, tiring day of towing. This RV resort is the only place we've ever stayed in that allows RV washing! For full-time RVers, that's pretty huge. They also have a mail room if you need to receive a package on the road.

The resort is split up into two areas by the road, the Retreat area is more resort like and caters to short term stays, while the other half has long term stays. They both look nice and are clean and beautiful. We will continue to visit every time we pass through the area.

      Lake Park Campground

      Nice Place

This place is well-maintained and a fairly nice park. Family friendly and there is a lake and playground within walking distance. The staff is courteous. We did not use any of the facilities, except dump station.

There are specific sites for 30 and 50. The middle spaces for 30 amp have no shade. For 50 amp avoid sites 59-63, 0 shade. There are no sewer hookups at the site. Only dumping station.

Reservations is done by calling the park, no online.

      Traders Village RV Park

      Clean and big

We stayed 4 nights in site 24, PT FHU on a level concrete pad with a picnic table and plot of grass. $40/ni after Good Sam. The park is split into two sections; the side we are in is next to an airfield and the other side is by a small dog run (next time, I'll request this section bc I'm traveling with my dogs). They have a store and the laundry is clean and well priced ($1.25/wash, $0.25/12 min dry). The wifi is strong and the park is quiet. There are some long term, possibly permanent, tenants, but their sites are well kept.

      Lake Tawakoni State Park Campground

      Nice state park

We don't stay at too many TX State Parks because of the added day use fee. We decided on this park due to its proximity to family in this area. The site was level and on a concrete pad with a parking spot right next to it. We did have a neighbor, so the space between us was fair. Our cell signal with Verizon was poor, so it made work difficult. Our site had W/E and there is a dump station. We did have a picnic table and fire ring. There are some sites that back up to a part of the lake. Noise level was pretty low. Unfortunately, we only spent 1 full day here, so we didn't really get to enjoy any of the hiking trails or do any fishing. We will definitely have to stay again in the future.

      The Vineyards Campground & Cabins

      Very nice

Our site had a concrete pad for our rv. Full hookups are very nice. While we were here nightly thunderstorms came in. The staff were on top of it as they drove around alerting everyone about the wind approaching. Clean laundry room and restrooms. We didn’t use the store due to corona fears and didn’t need to. Pet friendly. Quiet at night. I would absolutely stay here and recommend it to anyone. The only spring time issue is lake flooding will close it.

    Guide to McKinney

Many RV parks serving the McKinney area are situated across adjacent communities like Aubrey, Princeton, and Pilot Point, creating a network of camping options within 20-30 minutes of the city. The region features mostly level terrain with elevations ranging from 500-700 feet, making access straightforward for most camping vehicles. Temperatures typically range from 35-95°F throughout the year, with summer highs regularly exceeding 100°F in July and August.

    What to do

Explore Lake Lavon: Only 15 minutes east of McKinney, this 21,400-acre reservoir offers fishing, boating, and shoreline hiking opportunities. "This place is close to anywhere you need to go. The price is the best in the area and they give free high speed internet," notes a visitor of Patriot RV Park, which provides convenient access to the lake.

Visit local CrossFit centers: Active campers can maintain their fitness routines while traveling. "CrossFit is walking distance (separate business). The pool is nice. You're right next to Frisco, Prosper, Little Elm, Savannah, and Denton," says a camper at Shady Creek RV Park and Storage.

Try nearby barbecue restaurants: The area features several well-regarded BBQ spots within short driving distance of most campgrounds. One camper at Lafon's RV Park mentions, "There's a good little barbecue place not far, will be back when we need to go back and visit family in the Garland area."

    What campers like

Spacious layouts: Many parks offer roomier sites than typical urban RV parks. "The sites are fairly spacious... Big rig friendly with many different style spots to choose from," mentions a camper about Shady Creek.

Dog-friendly environments with dedicated facilities: Pet owners particularly appreciate the special amenities for four-legged companions. A visitor to Waggin Tail Ranch RV Park shares: "Nice sites most are fenced in with big yards. Nice big dog park with a pond, also a grooming and dog wash area."

Modern laundry facilities: Several parks offer updated laundry rooms with digital payment options. "The laundry room is nice, I really like the app that lets you pay so you don't need coins but also tells you how much time you have remaining or if there are machines available," notes a Shady Creek camper.

    What you should know

Cell service variations: While most parks report adequate Verizon coverage, other carriers can be spotty. One camper at Lafon's RV Park mentions, "The Wi-Fi was not good that would be my only complaint."

Reservation responsiveness differs significantly: Some parks are difficult to reach. A frustrated visitor to Sugar Hill RV Resort reports: "Tried calling several times (during business hours) and wrote several times, never got back to me. Finally just drove there (through the rain)... No online booking at all."

Drainage issues at some locations: Heavy rains can create temporary flooding. A camper at Patriot RV Park notes: "We were in the top part of the campground and had no issues with it being real wet. Have heard that the lower area does have pooling of water with heavy rain. It does go away quickly."

    Tips for camping with families

Look for parks with swimming pools: During hot Texas summers, pools provide essential cooling options. "They have a nice laundry room and mailboxes on site. They offer short or long term living," mentions a visitor to Patriot RV Park.

Consider parks with playgrounds: Some properties offer dedicated areas for children. "Has a pool with hot tub, and a small playground for the kids," notes a visitor at Waggin Tail Ranch.

Book in spring or fall for optimal conditions: The Texas heat can be intense for family activities. "We stayed for 10 days in June. The campground is well taken care of and all sites are clean," shares a camper at Good Shepherd RV Park & Storage.

    Tips from RVers

Select concrete pads when available: Level concrete sites simplify setup and stay stable during rain. "Wide gravel sites, wide enough to put out the mat and still park the truck next to that," reports a camper at Good Shepherd RV Park.

Watch for tight spacing at some parks: Site dimensions vary significantly between properties. "Some sites are a bit tight," notes a visitor to Patriot RV Park who stayed for two months.

Consider monthly rates for extended stays: Many parks offer significant discounts for longer bookings. "Great experience for long-term camping," mentions a visitor to Shady Creek, while another camper notes the park is "definitely off the beaten path" but "a nice, clean place for monthly rentals."
