The Susquehanna Valley surrounding Silver Spring offers a diverse camping landscape with elevations ranging from 350 to 450 feet above sea level. The area experiences a humid continental climate with four distinct seasons, making spring and fall particularly comfortable for tent camping with average temperatures between 55-75°F. The region's waterways and wooded terrain create natural boundaries between many camping areas.
What to do
Hiking trails near Pinch Pond: Located 20 miles from Silver Spring, this family-oriented campground offers easy access to nearby trails. "From a foodie standpoint, take my word for it, there is VERY little around these parts and what you can find nearby are local joints, which we loved BTW, including: Mount Gretna Hideaway, Gus' Keystone Family Restaurant, Kountry Kitchen Family Restaurant," notes Stuart K. about Pinch Pond Family Campground.
Fishing opportunities: Pequea Creek Campground provides creek access with gentle currents suitable for children and beginners. "Our site was very spacious and the sleeping area and cooking/hanging out area are way spread out so if you have kids you don't have to worry about noise at night. It's tucked back in a corner, you don't even see a neighbor!" shares Cait B. about the group site at Pequea Creek Campground.
Amish country exploration: Old Mill Stream Campground places you directly in Pennsylvania Dutch Country. "Nice campground with a creek that runs along the backside of the campground! Even though the amusement park wasn't open yet, kids still had a good time! The grounds are clean and there's also a small playground and basketball court!" says Ray L., highlighting some of the nearby attractions.
What campers like
Spacious, private sites: Unlike some crowded campgrounds, Pequea Creek offers sites with significant separation. "Lori was great with booking process, the general store has ice, and anything else you could forget. They deliver firewood to your site. We brought our 7 year old and we visited the playgrounds, hiked the trails and explored the creek area," explains Jessica A.
Clean facilities: Elizabethtown-Hershey KOA maintains exceptionally well-kept bathhouses and amenities. "Clean bathrooms, small store. Sites are large and well maintained," says Kathie M. about the Elizabethtown-Hershey KOA. Another camper notes, "Bathrooms are very clean and modern, but a decent walk from tent sites."
Family-oriented activities: Circle M RV and Camping Resort offers scheduled programming that keeps kids entertained. "Lots of events to keep the kids busy. We happened to be there on the weekend a magician came, my kids loved it. They have an indoor and outdoor pool. Nice playground," reports Leanne B. about Circle M RV and Camping Resort.
What you should know
Train noise factors: At some locations like Hershey Highmeadow Campground, passing trains can disrupt sleep. "Nice camp ground but super loud bc of the trains. Bath houses are nice and clean. I would suggest making sure you aren't close to the tracks bc the trains run all night long!" warns Kit.
Shooting range proximity: Several campgrounds near Silver Spring have nearby shooting ranges. "The only thing that is negative is that there is a shooting range right next door. It is pretty consistent from lunch to dinner. If your out and about, it won't be an issue," advises Tara N. about Pinch Pond Family Campground.
Site levelness varies: Thousand Trails PA Dutch Country has challenging terrain for larger rigs. "Unlevel is an understatement we were in E row and every camper there had front end 4 foot off the ground. Many other sites were the same. The walk to pool and all other amenities was not pleasant due to hills," shares Justin B. about Thousand Trails PA Dutch Country.
Tips for camping with families
Water activities planning: Otter Creek Campground offers river access ideal for family water play. "The river is only a short walk from the campground which is directly across the street at Otter Creek Picnic Area where there are private and public boat docks. You could easily fish from anywhere along the riverside and there was even an area where there were a few baby swings," describes Jen R. about Otter Creek Campground.
Budget accommodations: Look for tent sites with water and electric hookups to save money while maintaining convenience. "They have upgraded the tent sites since last year, no more primitive sites, all the tent sites are now mulch pad with water and electric," reports Melissa C. about Elizabethtown-Hershey KOA.
Pet-friendly options: Many campgrounds near Silver Spring accommodate dogs with specific areas. "The campground is very safe at night, no noise disturbances at night and we had no problems having our kids wander around by themselves," notes Yamileth K. about Hershey RV and Camping Resort, which allows pets in designated areas.
Tips from RVers
Site selection strategy: At Circle M RV Resort, site location significantly impacts your experience. "We chose a full hookup site in the wooded area. Depending on your rig size you're only available certain sites. They won't give you a 50 amp site unless your 50 amp or 40', they save them for larger campers," explains Kasey M.
Leveling preparation: Bring extra leveling blocks for many campgrounds in the area. "The sites are gravel and pretty level. Water pressure is pretty low and the sewer pipe is a little high but all around a really solid experience," shares Nick E. about PA Dutch Country.
Dump station access: Plan your arrival and departure times to avoid congestion at single dump stations. "They have a station that offered free air but unfortunately it was broken with no signage indicating that it was broken so we had to drive to a gas station," reports Devin G. about Old Mill Stream Campground.
