Schuylkill Haven sits within Pennsylvania's Appalachian Mountain range at approximately 615 feet above sea level, where temperatures can drop to the mid-30s during spring and fall nights even when days reach the 70s. The region's mixed hardwood forests create distinctive seasonal camping experiences, with crisp autumn colors typically peaking in mid-October. Local campgrounds often feature rocky terrain typical of eastern Pennsylvania's ridge-and-valley geography.
What to do
Explore boulder fields: Blue Rocks Family Campground offers access to a unique glacier rock field that's perfect for exploration. "Blue Rocks family campground is close to I78 however it is still off the beaten path. It is very peaceful to camp here as you have different types of environments. You can be down near the creek and in the open more, in the wooded areas, or you can be near the corn field and glacier rock field," shares Jen R.
Visit Knoebels Amusement Resort: Lake Glory Campground provides a convenient basecamp with shuttle service to this popular attraction. "10 minutes to Knoebels with the mighty Phoenix. The best wooden coaster on the planet. Always a great time at Lake Glory. We've been camping here for 16 years or so... Also, don't miss The Old Mill Ice Cream. The best Ice Cream on the planet! Did I mention that there's no parking or admission fees at Knoebels?" notes Vince L.
Fish local lakes: French Creek State Park Campground maintains two lakes stocked with multiple fish species. "There are two lakes in French Creek, Hopewell and Scott's Run and each contain many species of fish. We spent Saturday afternoon fishing but not catching anything at Scott's Run. It's a beautiful location and it was still a fun way to spend the day with the kids away from the site," explains Ellen C.
What campers like
Private, spacious sites: Blue Rocks Family Campground offers camping areas with natural buffers. "Our campsite had a great view of the glacier rock field and the corn field. The sites were super spacious and private. There was enough room for a full overlanding setup, three vehicles, a hammock, two dogs and a two person tent with plenty of room to spare," notes Jen R.
Direct trail access: Several campgrounds connect to hiking routes without requiring additional travel. "It's right at the base of one of the most popular hiking trail, The Pinnacle. It's nestled in the woods and is very rustic. Really gives you that camping feel! Wonderful camp store with everything you need and an awesome pool!" says Darrien K.
Clean facilities: Hickory Run State Park maintains updated shower houses. "The bathroom at the campground is very nice and new however it is a little on the dirty side. I don't know if they have anyone who goes around to clean the bath houses but it certainly was in need of cleaning. There are two large showers as well with very warm water," explains Jen R.
What you should know
Noise considerations: Several campgrounds near Schuylkill Haven sit close to highways. "Right off the highway with lots of loud trucks and bikes. The campground is very busy with loud activity from other campers at all hours," warns Tiani P. about Camp A While.
Leveling challenges: Mountain Springs Camping Resort requires careful setup. "Roads are very narrow and spots are tight. Be prepared to do a LOT of leveling. I do not recommend this campground for a novice," cautions Alysia H.
