French Creek State Park Campground sits approximately 20 miles northwest of Hatfield, Pennsylvania at an elevation of 600 feet above sea level. The park encompasses 7,526 acres across Chester and Berks Counties with two lakes totaling 68 acres. Winter camping is available year-round with temperatures often dropping below freezing between November and March.
What to do
Disc golf course exploration: Boulder Woods Campground features a challenging 18-hole disc golf course that weaves through wooded terrain. "They also have a disc golf course and they rent and sell discs. That's where we fell in love with disc golf," reports Erik W. The course attracts tournaments and dedicated players.
Fishing in multiple waterways: French Creek State Park Campground maintains two lakes stocked with diverse fish species. "There are several warm water fish in the lakes including northern pike, chain pickerel, bass, walleye, muskellunge and several types of panfish. Ice fishing is also allowed at both lakes and the ice thickness is monitored," notes Jen R.
Horseback riding trails: Bring your own horses to explore designated equestrian paths at Evansburg State Park. Note that horse rentals aren't available on-site. "Great park to do everything outdoorsy including, hiking, horseback riding, hunting and fishing," writes J K., highlighting the multi-use trail system.
What campers like
Private tent sites: Tohickon Valley County Park offers secluded tent camping with natural separation between sites. "All the sites have a ton of room to stretch out! (Room for fire/grill pits)," says Anna N., who appreciated the spaciousness compared to more crowded options nearby.
Family-friendly layout: Deep Creek Campground at Green Lane Park provides camping within walking distance of playgrounds and picnic areas. "Large sites, clean bathrooms, lots of hiking trails," mentions Joe B., although other reviewers note the sites lack privacy between neighbors.
Year-round accessibility: Some campgrounds near Hatfield remain open throughout winter. "Stayed over for one night in early December. Showers and bathrooms were great! If you're traveling through, there are many places to eat nearby," writes Galit P. about French Creek State Park, making it ideal for off-season glamping near Hatfield.
What you should know
Elevation and drainage concerns: After rainfall, some campgrounds experience significant mud issues. "Don't come if you're in a tent and it has been or will rain. It becomes flooded or turns into a mudpit," warns LU D. about Tohickon Family Campground.
Bathroom facility variation: Quality and proximity of facilities varies significantly between campgrounds. "The bathroom at the campground is very nice and new however it is a little on the dirty side. I don't know if they have anyone who goes around to clean the bath houses but it certainly was in need of cleaning," observes Jen R.
Site privacy differences: Quakerwoods Campground offers differing experiences depending on location. "The tent spots are pretty much on top of each other, not much privacy. It's next to a farm so the sunrise is pretty nice," notes Addam C., suggesting site selection matters greatly.
Tips for camping with families
Playground proximity: Select sites near recreation areas for convenience with young children. At French Creek, "There is a very nice playground situated conveniently between the loops of the campground. It had some slides, a bridge, lots of monkey bars, ladders to climb on and the best feature was the zip line," shares Jen R.
Kid-friendly glamping options: Tohickon Family Campground provides activities specifically designed for children. "We went with friends for a weekend. Both families have little kids and it was a great spot with a playground, construction digging area, and a bunch of activities for the kids to do," reports Jessica V.
Pool access timing: Swimming facilities typically operate seasonally. "The pool is open from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend. Children under the age of 14 must be accompanied by an adult. There is also a separate kiddie pool," notes Lee D. about Little Red Barn Campground.
Tips for RVers
Site leveling challenges: Prepare for potentially uneven terrain at some glamping locations close to Hatfield. "All sites have a paved level area which made set up a breeze. Sites were not on top of each other," reports Jen R. about French Creek, though experiences vary by specific loop and site.
Staff assistance with parking: Boulder Woods Campground offers help with difficult sites. "The spots are tight to get into but the staff will offer to park your camper using your vehicle. I let them park mine and I'm really glad I did. It was super tight," advises Erik W.
Hookup availability: Lake Towhee County Park offers basic sites without electrical connections. "I do not advise large rigs," warns Roger W., who rates the campground highly for smaller trailers and tents but cautions about limitations for bigger vehicles.
