    SUMMARY PRESENTED BYT-Mobile

The camping landscape in New York's Hudson Valley near Cragsmoor encompasses several established campgrounds with varied accommodation options. Jellystone Park at Birchwood Acres and Thousand Trails Rondout Valley offer tent, RV, and cabin camping within 15 miles of Cragsmoor. Boulder Point Campground and Winding Hills Park provide more natural settings with fewer amenities but larger campsites. Primitive tent-only camping is available at the Samuel F. Pryor III Shawangunk Gateway Campground, which serves as a base for rock climbing and hiking in the Gunks.

Most campgrounds in the region operate seasonally from April or May through October or early November due to the northeastern climate. "Beautiful in the fall," noted one visitor about Winding Hills Park, highlighting the colorful autumn foliage as a prime time to visit. Rainfall impacts accessibility during spring months, while summers are typically warm and humid. Reservations are recommended for holiday weekends, particularly at popular family-oriented campgrounds like Jellystone Park, where strict quiet hours are enforced. Several campgrounds require cash payment for non-residents, with fees ranging from $30-45 per night for developed sites with electrical hookups.

Campers consistently mention the wooded, shaded sites as a significant benefit across multiple campgrounds near Cragsmoor. A recent review described Winding Hills Park as having "large private sites, some with electricity, clean bath house, hot showers in a quiet and wooded campground." Family-friendly amenities distinguish certain properties, with Jellystone Park featuring swimming pools, splash parks, and organized activities. Boulder Point Campground receives praise for its more rustic atmosphere while still providing essential facilities. Cell reception varies significantly across the area, with visitors reporting unreliable service at some locations, particularly with certain carriers. Most established campgrounds offer shower facilities, potable water, and trash disposal, while more primitive sites may have limited amenities beyond vault toilets and fire rings.

      Rip Van Winkle Campgrounds

      Owners are rude

      Rip Van Winkle Campground

      Catskills NY

      The Good:

      1. The location

      2. The actual campground itself. There are roomy sites with trees.

      The Bad:

      1. If you are lucky enough to get an assigned campsite away from the busy road, it is a HALF MILE walk to the only showers in the ENTIRE campground. They have nearly 200 campsites and ONE set of showers.

      2. The speed bumps are beyond ridiculous. Two humpers and high as Bob Marley.

      3. If you call the office for help (our electrical post was out) they record you without your knowledge.

      The Ugly:

      1. The campground lost power on my electrical post and tried to blame ME for it. I own a Bulldog surge protector, yeah, so it wasn't me. How it was handled was unbelievable. I have never been treated so rudely. A simple apology would have gone a long way.

Beaver Pond Campground in Harriman State Park

      Bare bones

No hookups. It was wooded, quiet and dark at night. I used the dump station on my way out. The first time I ever saw a poop fountain. The sewer opening sticks up above ground level. The cover swivels away, so I couldn't put it on top of my hose. And then, when I tried to rinse it, there was nowhere for it to go, because the inlet is elevated.

      Kittatinny Campground

      AWFUL

We reserved for a day. Very bad service. The river is super dirty and they did not even clean the trash cans. Besides, the fire ring has no grill cooking grate, so if you don’t bring your own NO GRILLING. Ryan was the person in front that took care of us, he was rude, my kids felt weird because he was not welcoming at all. Also, we try to ask for a partial refund since we did not felt comfortable since the beginning, and they said NO. We have experience camping, but this one was simply THE WORST. We lost the money but we won’t put our kids in a difficult situation. Thanks.

      Jellystone Park™ Gardiner

      Overall good stay

We stay at a lot of Jellystone parks so have become accustomed to the park layouts and activities. This one was well maintained with clean facilities. Some things like the mini golf and fire pits needed maintenance. The pools were nice but get very busy later in the day. The sites up on the hills are nice but beware, it’s a hill! There is little to no WiFi or cell service or it gets easily bogged down, so be ready for that. Food was basic but good. Some activities like bingo were a bit chaotic and there were a lot of ground hornets around the jumping pillows. Would totally go again.

Deerfield Campground — Promised Land State Park

      Nice for a quick stopover

Stayed for a quick weekday overnight at a primitive site—fine spot overall. Pros: Restrooms and showers clean and in working order. Pet-friendly. Nice surroundings (though nothing extraordinary). Easy access with a sedan. Cons: most sites are very close to one another with little privacy. Fair amount of road noise. Quiet hours didn’t seem to be enforced—some folks playing music until midnight.

      Happy Days Campground

      Excellent campsite

We were looking for a campsite on our way up north and we’re so happy to find this one. While it is a commercial site. It is located in the woods. It has full hook up and portable water at the site. We couldn’t be happier with a warm welcome we received late at night and the cleanliness of the bathrooms and each site. I would highly recommend this campsite.

      Mills Norrie State Park Campground

      4.7 stars

Excellent campground! The forest is beautiful, the Hudson River is super close, there are great trails, and the surrounding area is beautiful. Sites are electric only, so make sure your water pump is working and fresh water tank is full. There are spigots for filling and a nice dump station. The player is excellent. I don't think tetn camping here would be great because the tent sites are closer together and there are trains that pass regularly. We couldn't hear the trains in our camper and our site was large and private with great Forest and hammock trees. The mansion tours at Vanderbilt and Mills were awesome!

      Mahlon Dickerson Reservation

      Primitive

The main issue with the sites was that they were primitive -- no water. The campsites were basically just wooden platforms, with a picnic table and fire pit. There were also a lot of bugs, though this may be due to the rain. The location itself was fairly pretty and there were a number of hiking trails of not-overly-serious difficulty. The particular site we picked left is a little farther from our car than we would have liked, but for other sites you can bring your car closer.
