Missionary Road

Awesome spot definitely recommend getting there early. There are spots along the way in the corners there will be private land. Keep going nestled in the corners of the road are the spots this spot is easy to miss on the way up

Pull-Offs for a quick night or go higher up for more space

I just drove up in June of 2025 and it was a really nice dirt road and my two-wheel drive ProMaster had no trouble so not sure why the four-wheel drive ideas in the other comments

If I'm like four or five pull off the road flat spots and at least half a dozen just on the road pull-offs for a quick night in the van and then quite high up. There's a very big area where many many vehicles could park but you'd have neighbors

And found a really sweet spot a mile or two past the cattle guard, but there wasn't so many spots past the cattle guard until I hit this one

I imagine there's more because this road goes forever

Beautiful remote camping

4x4 required, but there's tons of camping along missionary ridge road. Beautiful alpine creek-side sites galore.

Not much to choose from

There are pull off on a dirt access road with only 3 or so camp spots. Not good for vans. Great for backpackers .

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the rules for dispersed camping along Missionary Ridge Road?

Dispersed camping along Missionary Ridge Road follows standard National Forest Service guidelines. Camp only in established sites, usually identified by fire rings or cleared areas. Pack out all trash and waste. Be aware of private property boundaries—some areas along the road are privately owned, so respect posted signs. Camping is typically limited to 14 days. Fire restrictions may apply during dry seasons, so check with the local Forest Service office before your trip for current regulations and permit requirements.

How do I get to Missionary Ridge Road for dispersed camping near Durango?

Missionary Ridge Road is located near Durango, Colorado. To access it, head northeast from Durango and look for the dirt access road that climbs into the mountains. The road is well-marked but can be easy to miss, so watch carefully for signs. Once on the road, you'll find several pull-offs and camping spots as you ascend. The road winds through forested areas with occasional views, so drive carefully and watch for other vehicles on the narrow sections.

Do I need a 4WD vehicle to access Missionary Ridge Road for camping?

Vehicle requirements for Missionary Ridge Road are mixed. While some campers report that 4WD is necessary, others have successfully navigated the road in 2WD vehicles like a ProMaster van. The road is dirt and can have rough patches or become more challenging after rain or during spring melt. If you have a low-clearance vehicle or are visiting during wet conditions, 4WD might be advisable. For the most reliable access and to reach more remote camping spots further up the road, a vehicle with higher clearance is recommended.

What dispersed camping areas are available along Missionary Ridge Road near Durango?

Missionary Ridge Road offers several types of dispersed camping areas. There are approximately 4-5 flat pull-off spots suitable for vehicles, plus at least half a dozen roadside pull-outs good for quick overnight stays. More secluded sites can be found nestled in the corners of the road, though these can be easy to miss when driving up. Some beautiful alpine creek-side sites are available for those who venture further along the road. Sites are limited in number, with only about 3 spots on some sections of the road, so arriving early is recommended, especially during peak seasons. Most sites are better suited for tents or smaller rigs than for vans.
