Best Dog-Friendly Camping near Downe, NJ

We stayed here because it was one of the closer campgrounds to a concert we were going to. Honestly, because of that, we weren't focused on doing much in the campground and it was 100 degrees that weekend so we spent most of the time in the trailer with the air conditioner. I will say, the site we were in wasn't very well marked. The dog park was large, but no shade at all which is a big deal in the heat. The bathrooms were horrible. My daughter and I were practically scalded when we tried to shower. Actually had to go down to the office and complain about it. They immediately came back and adjusted the water heater, but that only made a small difference. Overall, I would stay again if I needed to be in that area for some reason, but I wouldn't go for a vacation.

This is unquestionably the best KOA I’ve been to. I usually do not like KOA, except when there are no alternatives. This one is way above average. Typically these places are all gravel and dust. This one has paved roads, grass and trees. There is a pond for fishing, too. The only complaint is that, like all KOAs, the sites are on top of each other. The neighbor’s sewer connection is right next to our picnic table! But, the sites are large enough for large RVs, they have 30/50 amp hookups and water & sewer. There are cabins and large tents you can rent. There is a playground, pavilion, laundry, and several shower/bathrooms. (The one near us didn’t have hot water. The office people said they were working on it.) There us also a large, grassy, fenced dog park which my 2 spaniels appreciated.

I was able to book my site the day before the trip. The site itself was set back some, and felt secluded while still being near the parking area.

Walk to bathrooms and camp store was on the longer side. Firewood was $5 a bundle, but the register wasn't working and they could only take cash.

The hiking in the immediate area was beautiful, lots of fun trails and wildlife. Fishing, kayaking, zip lining, tons of great activities.

The firepits have grates over one half, so campfire cooking is a breeze. Cook up and use the provided picnic table for an easy dinner set up.

The park itself is very dog friendly and most sites had dogs. There is also an off leash dog park at Lum's pond and dog water dishes outside the camp store.

The showers and bathrooms were incredibly well kept with hot water and stocked supplies. If you didn't feel like walking so far, the tents had a spiget with running water near the parking areas.

Reception for Verizon was spotty, t mobile was pretty great. Wish there was an ATM on site though I don't think the cash only situation is a normal one for this campground.

All in all an amazing trip, and I'll be back as soon as possible.

Plenty of room for big rigs. Sites are spacious and roads are wide. Hookups work great and it has the best wifi I've ever seen. Hotspots throughout the park. It is on the Rehobeth Bay. They have sites on the bay or on the shores of the lagoons. Restaurants, bars, pool, beach, dog park and beach, game room, well stocked store, the list goes on and on. We had to cancel this years trip there but just took a day trip and stopped in. They are still adding amenities throughout the park. The staff is excellent. Golf cart, kayak, and bike rentals are available. This is an excellent park to bike ride and kayak in. Just outside the campground is a public boat launch into the bay. It's a neat place to sit on the docks and watch the boats or fish. Crabbing and clamming can be done right at the campground. The offer a shuttle to Rehobeth Beach which is a great idea because the parking at the beach is limited.

It should be noted that this campground is no longer a KOA, it is now a Sun Resort and is called Sun Outdoors Cape May.

Our last stay here was 2 years ago.  

First the good:  The campsites are a good size.  We chose a pull through.  It came with a concrete patio and stone/gravel pad.  The grounds were clean, staff was friendly, and clientele was quiet and pleasant.  The dog park is very large and well shaded.  Our friends stayed in a cottage and it was really nice.  They even extended their stay because of the accommodations.  The pool was enjoyable.  It could definitely be larger to accommodate weekend crowds.  The water is also on the greenish side and slightly cloudy but it didn't feel dirty.  There seems to be a lot of fresh planting going on which looks really nice.  The men at the security gate are very nice.

Now the bad:  It seems there hasn't been any updating to the bathhouses.  I'm hoping that Sun has plans to update the bathhouses in the very near future.  The toilets all have very low water pressure and you often enter the bathhouse to find used toilet paper floating in the toilets.  Also, the toilets aren't very sturdy.  The staff at the front desk was friendly but should be more knowledgeable about the layout of the campground.  We were instructed to enter our site a certain way - this would have put the sewer, electric, etc. on the wrong side of our trailer.  Luckily we did not follow their instructions.
