Best RV Parks & Resorts near Lake Hopatcong, NJ

Several RV parks near Lake Hopatcong provide full-hookup sites with varying amenities. Mahlon Dickerson Reservation offers level paved sites with 50-amp electric service and water hookups, though no sewer connections are available at individual sites. Mountain Top RV Park features newly upgraded infrastructure including 50-amp wiring, upgraded sewer systems, and newer water lines for RVs. Pleasant Acres Farm RV Resort accommodates big rigs with full hookup sites and remains open from April through October. Many parks in the region have gravel pads rather than concrete, with site spacing varying considerably between locations. "The sites are nicely wooded, very well spaced, fairly level with 50A service and water hookup. Although the water spigots were shared between sites, they provide hose caddies that should reach most RV hookups."

Navigation into some mountain parks requires careful planning due to narrow roads and elevation changes. According to one visitor, "if you are towing or have a motorhome, make sure you follow the directions on the website. Coming in from the wrong road could lead you to a hairpin turn and steep hill." Most RV parks in the area offer dump stations, though Mahlon Dickerson provides only a single station for the entire campground. Cell service varies significantly throughout the region, with AT&T and Verizon coverage spotty in more remote locations. Pull-through sites are limited at many parks, with back-in spots being more common. During peak summer and fall foliage seasons, advance reservations are essential as motorhome sites fill quickly, particularly on weekends. Pet-friendly designated sites are available at most parks, though some maintain specific pet-free zones.

    Mahlon Dickerson Reservation

    Nice, small, spacious campground

We stayed at site 15 for 5 days. The sites are nicely wooded, very well spaced, fairly level with 50A service and water hookup. Although the water spigots were shared between sites, they provide hose caddies that should reach most RV hookups. No sewer hookup, but there is a convenient dump station. There are no fire rings in the RV section, only raised grills. We had the place pretty much to ourselves during the week, but the weekend did get busy. AT&T had ok data connection with 1-2 bars most of the time. There is no satellite coverage due to the heavy tree canopy. OTA TV was very inconsistent using an external omni antenna. There is no WiFi. There is a very nice network of trails in the reservation, most if not all were leashed dog friendly. There is a very nice restaurant, Stone Water, less than 10 miles away and is right on lake Hopatcong.

    Kymers Camping Resort

Fun, friendly & nestled in the woods

We stayed at Kymer's on a whim for a weekend, so we could be close to Mountain Creek for a Spartan Race. It truly exceeded our expectations in all aspects. This is a family friendly, camper-friendly place. Lots of seasonals- everyone waves, everyone stops to chat. This is what a campground should feel like. The sound of laughter and play sitting around the huge, clean pool was refreshing. Our site was Oak 10. It was level, good placement of electric water & sewer connects. Camp store has all the basics you might need. There is a brook that flows adjacent to the property. It's peaceful & magical. Pet friendly, although we didn't have our pup with us. We will be back again. I almost feel like I'm revealing a hidden gem with this post. 💎

    Colonial Woods Family Resort

    Not big rig friendly.

Ok so let me start off by saying. If we still had our smaller travel trailer this review would’ve been at least 4 stars. However this place is not the place for you if you have a fifth wheel. The roads are very narrow, pretty sizable boulders on both sides, trees are very low and need to be trimmed (almost took my ac out with a huge limb). Now if you’re not big rig camping like we do, this place is great for you. Close to the ringing rocks and three other towns. We were able to do so much even though it rained the entire weekend we were there.

Pros Great People beautiful surroundings Nice Bathrooms Quiet and Peaceful Accessible Nice Pool Every store U could Need is in about 15 mins Away Not Alot of Stupid rules just Be respectful Pet friendly

I Been coming Here for years Never Had A Bad Time.

    Mountain Vista Campground

    Mt Vista Campground

Beautiful Campground. Clean. Gravel sites. Fire ring and picnic table. All sites have ample room. Lots of pull through for bigger rigs. Wooded. Large dog park. Love the Campground except our site is near a fairly busy road which takes away from that beautiful tranquility. They have camouflaged it as best they could. Friendly staff. Lots to do. Pool, tennis. Sauna, pond for fishing ( catch & release ). Would definitely recommend.

    Tobyhanna State Park Campground

    Great family campground

This place only gets 4 stars because I thought we were going to have water and electric hook ups. They only have 2 kinds of sites, modern electric (only electric) and primitive. They have a potable water station and dump station and very few sites with electric hook up. They also have specific pet friendly sites. We had a wonderful time here. We went for Father’s Day weekend in June. The lake is gorgeous! Beachfront swimming and boat rentals, great biking and hiking trails. Sites are mostly separated by trees but are still close. Bath houses were very clean and they have a dish washing sink as well. Beach is within walking and biking distance. Two cons- Bath house at the beach is 50 cents for a 2-minute shower, so we just went back to the campground bath house to clean up. The playground near sites 53-56 is a little underwhelming. Otherwise was a great stay! We already booked another stay in September this year!

The Pines Campground — Promised Land State Park

Quiet, just remote enough, a Great Lake, and nice camp hosts

I stayed for three nights in a pull through trailer site with 50 AMP and 30 AMP electric. Easy to get in and out of, nice and shady, big spaces so you were not on top of one another, and nice and quiet. Clean and modern bath house, water close by, and great camp hosts. Definitely recommend it.

Lower Lake Campground Northwoods Area — Promised Land State Park

    Northwoods Campground

Big sites with 30 amp service available for RVs and trailers. Each site has a large picnic table and a fire ring with an adjustable grate. The pull-through sites don’t offer much in the way of privacy, but that’s the trade off for convenience. There are two potable water spigots in the campground. The bathhouse offers warm showers, 2 dishwashing sinks, and a coin-operated washer and dryer. The facilities are kept very clean. On the weekends it can get pretty crowded, so it tends to be louder at night then, but the camp hosts and the rangers do a good job of enforcing quiet hours. Access points to several trails are very near the campground. As with all PA state parks, alcohol is prohibited. The park doesn’t have a camp store, however, there is a small general store on Route 390 (The Lake Store) just north of the park that would have any essentials you may have forgotten, as well as ice for your cooler.

    Panther Lake Camping Resort

    Stayed all summer

We stayed at Panther Lake as full timers all season. Great during the week but very busy on weekends. Could be noisy with children not very well supervised.
Friendly, helpful staff. Cable TV poor when it rains. Cell service spotty all carriers. No internet at sites. Lake beautiful and pool nice.

Guide to Lake Hopatcong

The Lake Hopatcong region sits at approximately 925 feet above sea level in New Jersey's highlands, creating cooler temperatures than surrounding lowland areas. RV sites near Lake Hopatcong range from densely wooded mountain locations to more open settings with lake views. Cell service quality varies widely between carriers throughout the highlands, with many remote campgrounds experiencing limited connectivity.

What to do

Hiking trails access: Mahlon Dickerson Reservation offers direct trail connections from campsites to the surrounding woods. "There are plenty of trails, water (creeks, pond, lake) views and even if the place is packed there is PLENTY of room," notes one camper who describes it as their favorite campground ever.

Petting farm visits: Pleasant Acres Farm RV Resort maintains a small animal enclosure where children can interact with farm animals. "The farm has goats, a donkey, and a pony within the campground. Very cool," explains a visitor who appreciated this unique feature at a campground that remains open from April through October.

River fishing spots: Tri-State RV Park provides direct access to riverside locations. "They are also located right on a river that you can easily access by foot," reports one camper. This park serves primarily as a convenient overnight stop rather than a destination campground.

What campers like

Spacious wooded sites: Mahlon Dickerson Reservation provides substantial spacing between campsites. "The campsites are paved and mostly level. They are wooded and large," notes a reviewer who appreciates the park's quiet setting. The reservation also features raised wooden platforms at tent sites to keep gear dry.

Convenient NYC access: Liberty Harbor RV Park offers strategic placement for city exploration. "There is a ferry 100-yards away that takes you to Wall Street M-F. There is a great market about 1/4 of a mile away, and the path that can take you to WTC or 33rd Street area is only a mile away," explains a visitor who found the location's convenience outweighed its basic amenities.

Updated park infrastructure: Mountain Top RV Park has invested in significant upgrades to their facilities. "The newly upgraded camp infrastructure elevated the stay, providing amenities for comfort and entertainment. The family-friendly atmosphere was evident through the thoughtfully designed property, including an updated pool, playground, game room, and a brand-new pickleball court," mentions a recent visitor.

What you should know

Off-season limitations: Many rv campgrounds near Lake Hopatcong, New Jersey operate seasonally with reduced services outside peak months. At Thousand Trails Timothy Lake North, visitors noted significant limitations: "ignore the website amenities and pictures, NO laundry, No store, No wifi, No personnel. You have to check in at a completely different campground then drive up here and try to find a site."

Traffic noise considerations: Highway proximity affects several campgrounds. At Tri-State RV Park, reviewers consistently mention noise issues: "Located just off the highway so lots of vehicle noise 24/7. Sites are on a gravel lot," and another notes, "While the staff is very friendly and polite you are basically in an old parking lot right below the freeway. Very easy to get on & off the highway but loud highway noise almost all night."

Varying site quality: Site conditions can differ significantly within the same property. At Timothy Lake North, a camper observed: "Very rocky and I don't mean crushed stone, nope just rocks all over the site. Then come to find out no fire ring was available. So we took all the rocks around our site and made our own."

Tips for camping with families

Animal encounters: Pleasant Acres Farm RV Resort offers animal interaction opportunities that children particularly enjoy. "My daughter loved the horses and goats," mentions one parent. Another visitor notes the farm has "fantastic scenic views and plenty of planned activities to keep you occupied."

Weekend activity planning: Campgrounds near Lake Hopatcong often schedule organized events on weekends. One visitor to Pleasant Acres mentioned, "There were some organized activities which was nice, not as much as a Jellystone Park. The playground, hayride, animals to feed (goats, chickens, donkey and pony) provided good family fun."

Swimming options: Several Lake Hopatcong area rv campgrounds maintain pools as alternatives to lake swimming. At Mountain Top RV Park, families appreciated "the updated pool" as part of the campground's family-friendly features, along with the "playground, game room, and brand-new pickleball court."

Tips from RVers

Route selection caution: When navigating to Thousand Trails Scotrun, experienced RVers emphasize using designated routes. While specific directions weren't provided in reviews, this advice aligns with the mountainous terrain where some roads may have sharp turns or steep grades unsuitable for larger rigs.

Utility hookup quality: RV campers should verify hookup functionality before setup. At Woodland Trails RV and Campground, a visitor discovered: "The site was supposed to have electric and water hookup. Electric worked but the water did not. Most of the sites were empty, so I investigated and found that none of the water hookups in the 5 sites around us worked."

Laundry facilities: Limited laundry access requires planning for extended stays. At Liberty Harbor RV Park, a camper reported, "The laundry was not working properly and ate a good $5 of our quarters. We went to the office where the security guard told us that they cannot do anything and that we would need to come back when the office was open."
