What to do
Hiking along the Kettle River: Trails in Banning State Park Campground range from easy family paths to more challenging routes. "The hiking here is amazing! The Quarry Loop along the Kettle River has a ton of history, allowing you to explore the remains of the 130+ year old sandstone quarry. Seeing the drill holes in the cliffs was really cool and the remains of the old buildings were a highlight even to our small children," notes Jennifer H.
Rock climbing at local quarries: Climbing opportunities can be found at Robinson Park Camping, particularly popular among experienced climbers. "This campground is really great... There are both group campsites and individual campsites here. Things to do around the park include rock climbing including the state's best 12a/b!!! Sigma lives up to the hype," writes Les R.
Winter activities in the off-season: For campers seeking year-round outdoor experiences, some campgrounds remain accessible through winter. "This is a great place for winter camping! The campsites are large enough (despite the snow) to set up suitable winter tents, and each site has a picnic table and fire pit. In the park, there's a lot of ice climbing and cross country skiing," reports Alexa S. about Banning State Park.
What campers like
Historical features throughout parks: The Old Logging Trail — St. Croix State Park offers unique historical elements. "Clean, fairly private sites. Easy to get in and out. Walk in sites available. Canoe outfitters in park during most of the summer. A great way to spend a weekend," shares Tony J. The park features CCC-era buildings and a 100-foot fire tower with panoramic views.
Dog-friendly amenities: Many campgrounds accommodate pets with specialized areas. A standout feature at Banning RV Park and Campground is the dog park. "We absolutely loved the dog park. It was not just some small dog area it was top of the line dog park, we are going back again for our 2nd visit," says Matt P.
Private, wooded camping sites: Pathfinder Village-St Croix offers sites with natural separation. "Lots of tall evergreen trees here that you are nestled in. Have to know a seasonal site holder to camp here. Sites can be a little tricky backing into because of the trees, but ultimately they have enough space even for large rigs," notes Tori K.
What you should know
Variable water pressure and hookup distances: At some campgrounds, site utility placement requires planning. "Our water source ended up being 75' plus from our RV. Thankfully I just happened to be carrying the extra hose for several years but never had to use it before," reports Sam C. about Banning RV Park and Campground.
Seasonally intense insects: Mosquito activity peaks during certain months. "We had a terrible experience last year trying to camp here, BUT it's not the campgrounds fault! Unfortunately we chose the peak of mosquitos season and camping next to slow moving water is a recipe for disaster," shares Lili R. about St. Croix State Park.
Varying cellular connectivity: Most campgrounds in the region have limited service. At Paint Rock Springs Campground — St. Croix State Park, "Felt nice to spend a weekend without cell service about an hour away from home... Nice campground. Each site has a picnic table and fire ring. There are flush toilets and showers and the office has a store for any last minute needs," writes Tori K.
Tips for camping with families
Explore historical sites with kids: The quarry ruins provide educational opportunities for children. "We decided to try an extend the camping season by staying here in the first weekend of October, and we were rewarded greatly! The colors were near peak and the water was really high, so there were many kayakers going down the river as we hiked along the parallel trails," explains Bryan S. about Banning State Park.
Consider timing for swimming activities: Water features may not be ideal year-round. "Typically my family likes to camp where we can swim, and there is not a great option for that here, but this late in the season, hiking was on the agenda and this park is amazing for that," notes Bryan S.
Plan for weather variability: Temperatures fluctuate significantly by season. "Spent two nights at the campground. Night one was extreme heat and humidity and night two was extreme storms. Because of a large wind storm several years ago, there is very limited tree coverage in the campground," reports ERolf P. about Riverview Campground.
Tips from RVers
Check site angles and backing requirements: At Grand Casino RV Resort, site layout presents challenges. "The designers of this park have clearly never spent a night in an RV. This place pushes all of my buttons for things not to do when building an RV park. Virtually every site in the park is a blind back in from the driver seat. You're trying to back your trailer into a site on the right side without being able to see anything over there," explains Adrian G.
Bring extra hoses and water connections: Water hookups at some campgrounds require additional equipment. "We were quick to learn that water hookups were shared with other sites and required 'y' connections at the spigots. Our host(s) were prepared with the connectors in hand but seemed a bit surprised that we might need them," shares Sam C.
Verify sewer connections before setup: Drainage considerations affect comfort at some sites. "Finally, one of my all-time favorites, all of the sewer connections are cut off about 12 inches above the ground. This means that even in a relatively tall fifth wheel, you are going to be trying to make shit filled water flow uphill," warns Adrian G. about Grand Casino RV Resort.
