    Sherwood Forest RV Resort

    Megalopolis RV Circus

Allow me to begin by saying I have never been to a large RV campground… ever! This place is so huge that you won’t be surprised if you get lost in this place at least a couple of times before you find your slotted RV destination for the night. Also, I was amazed by how close to the concrete jungle you are at this place, but once you turn on the winding little lane that will bring you to this megalopolis RV circus – fitting given your proximity to all of themed amusement parks! – after crossing through the entry gates, you immediately lose sight of all the traffic, noise and business as you are swallowed up by the lush verdant trees of pines, palms and Ancient oaks.

As for the campground itself, you’ll enter off the very busy 192 and head south on Scott Boulevard, where you’ll pass 3 intersecting lanes before arriving to Sherwood Forest RV Resort. There will be plenty of signage, so you shouldn’t get lost arriving here – it's another story once inside this massive compound. To navigate yourself to the proper location you have been assigned of the 514 potential overnight possibilities that exist, you’ll first want to stop off at the administration building, where they should give you a map – and if they don’t, be sure to ask for you, because you’re going to need it! Basically, this entire place is back-to-back RV’s parked at a diagonal with very little to no privacy whatsoever and given that Sherwood Forest is so heavily populated, you are going to encounter both a decent amount of traffic (the golf cart kind) and noise. And while I would normally encourage folks to get as close to the pool area as possible, I found this main congregating place to be quite jam packed and noisy.

Amenities: Clubhouse / lounge, mini-golf, basketball, dog park, RV storage, restroom / shower facilities, horseshoe pit, WiFi (at a cost away from the main building), shuffleboard, darts, fitness center, in-ground heated swimming pool, nearby Tiki bar, LP gas refill station, laundr-O-mat, ballroom, mail room, library, banquet hall, catch-and-release lake fishing, marketplace store, playground, game room, billiards, whirlpool / spa / hot tub, picnic tables, pavilion areas, fire pits, BBQ grill, designated trash receptacles, trash compactor, cable TV / satellite and back-in / pull-through sites with full hook-ups (30/ 50 amp electric, water and sewage). In addition to all of the amenities, there’s also a ton of activities, including live music concerts, potluck dinners, BBQ cookouts, dance lessons, ice cream socials, craft-making classes, outdoor chess, mini-golf tournaments, church services, aerobic dancing, exercise classes, line dancing (yeehaw!), board game nights, Bingo, card playing as well as formal holiday dinners around Thanksgiving and Christmas.

Insider’s tips? Here’s a few: (1) The best sites, in general, are all of the ones that are completely on the perimeter of Sherwood Forest RV Resort, specifically sites #1– 137 (you will note that there are a handful of cottages and cabins for rent in these slots as well); (2) When you get done staring down the inside of your cooler or mini-fridge and are looking for a place to sit down and eat for a change, then there are no shortage of food joints to have a look at, including: Krispy Kreme (my personal favorite), Cracker Barrel (my personal least favorite restaurant in the universe), Longhorn Steakhouse, Ichiban Buffet, Martin’s BBQ, Olive Garden and 192 Crab & Lobster Juicy Seafood & Bar;(3) If by chance you have forgotten anything, avoid paying double or triple the price at the on-site market by going to either Walmart or Publix, which are both about a mile and half away; and (4) If you would actually like to enjoy a bit of the outdoors while staying at this RV amusement park, go for a day trip to Lake Tohopekaliga, which has some pretty amazing bass fishing as well as a few choice places to drop your boat into, like Twin Oaks or Cherokee Point Conservation Areas (and if you don’t have your own kayak, canoe or boat, contact Wild Willys Airboat Tours and they’ll show you around).

    Happy Camping!

    Plantation Oaks

    Basic mobile home/RV park

We stayed there during the Tampa Show. Last minute decision. Park has a lot of long term RV's and many of them older. Dog friendly and has a decent sized dog run. We had a pull thru spot that was plenty long enough to leave our dolly hooked up to our 33' class A, and still have plenty of room to park in front. Although it was very narrow and I was a little concerned about my leveling jacks sinking in when it rained due to it being all grass. Fortunately it didn't rain much. There were cable hook ups, but I couldn't get a signal. Not sure about wifi, because I just used my hot spot. Most, if not all, of the short term spaces had picknick tables. Overall just a fairly quiet place to park with hookups and not too far off the highway.

    Horseshoe Cove RV Resort

    Great short or long stay

I live local and have been staying here in the pull through area a month until I transition to 100% travel trailer life. I have 2 50 lb+ dogs and there are many other people with dogs, plus a dog park. Park is very well kept, beautiful gym, pool, hot tub, and private island on backside to fish and other games like horseshoes. Love this place! Maintenance is A M A Z I N G!!!!!!!! I will be staying here again for short and extended periods and feel more than comfortable to recommend to friends and family. Laundry facilities and bathrooms are fine too. Dryers dry a full load of towels in one cycle, was pretty impressive! Also plenty of area to ride a bike a couple times around the park. It is also close to gas, grocery store and really good restaurants. Two thumbs up!!!

    Hickory Point RV Park

Nice, quiet, well maintained, friendly, wooded CG on the water

We have a 36 ft Class A with a Cherokee Trailhawk tow and stayed in site 132 for 3 days in mid April. The CG is very clean, well maintained, but relatively expensive. The CG is a mixture of long-term and transient folks. The roads are paved, but the sites are sandy, shelly gravel. The staff is friendly and very helpful. They have beach chairs near the water and a fire pit that they lit every evening near sunset. In addition to the Bark Park area, there is a nice wooded area where you can walk your dog as well.

AT&T coverage was pretty good, with 3-4 bars of 5G service and speeds up to 11 MB/s. The CG has a lot of trees, but the sites in the front of the park are pretty open. We had no line-of-site to the DISH satellites, but did have an open view north, so Starlink usable, but the CG had WiFi and we were right across from the antenna, so we didn’t use Starlink. The CG WiFi achieved speeds up to 8 MB/s.

    Colt Creek State Park Campground

    Very Nice Campground

This campground is obviously quite new.  Spacious and open sites that are very big rig friendly.  Pads are L-shaped to accommodate the picnic table, yet because of the spacioiusness there's room to pitch a screen tent in the grass.

The demerits for us were (1) laundry is coin op only (no credit card), surprising for such a new park; and (2) no plastic bag dispenseries for dog clean up.  Such amenities are nice for extended stays.

    Edward Medard Park

    Gem of the County

What a beautiful well kept facility near suburbia. Just a short drive from Tampa and Lakeland areas this first come first served facility is a favorite of locals. Full service for RV's (even a dump station. Clean, monitored bathroom facilities close to lots of additional activities! Kayaking and fishing on the lake is a blast! Frisbee Golf (this is an advanced course) equestrian and hiking trails, picnic and playground areas. Pet friendly but there were more than a few stray cats when we were there (a problem the rangers are trying to address). Midweek is best time to visit as weekends fill fast (usually by Thursday night)

    Plantation Oaks

    Nice peaceful place

It’s a great basic park. It does have a nice size dog run and very pet friendly as long as you pick up afterwards. The office manager Christina along with Melisa the maintenance manager has been nothing but fantastic since day one. After spending a few months here it seems to be a safe friendly environment.. I highly recommend it, it’s close to shopping and some good restaurants yet it’s not in the middle of the hustle.

Encore Clover Leaf Forest RV Resort

Nice spot, nice people, nice amenities

We recently stayed at Clover Forest RV Park in our 40ft Class A Motorhome, and overall, it was a pleasant experience. The park is clean and well-maintained, with nice amenities that made our stay comfortable. The pool was sparkling clean and provided a great spot to relax during the hot afternoons. The laundry facilities were convenient and well-kept, which is always a plus when on the road.

One thing to note is that the spaces are a bit small, especially for a larger RV like ours. It felt a little tight maneuvering into the spot, but we managed fine. The proximity to other campers wasn’t an issue, though it’s something to keep in mind if you’re used to more space.

Overall, Clover Forest RV Park offered a good balance of comfort and convenience. The small spaces didn’t detract too much from the experience, and the clean facilities and amenities made it a solid choice for a short or long stay.

    MacDill AFB FamCamp

    Utilitarian

No surprise on a military base but felt like a campground equivalent of base housing. Tight spots with full hook ups. Lots of snow birds, so getting in was a challenge. We had to show up without a reservation and take advantage of first come, first serve spots.

Full hook up (electric/water/sewer) and cable. No wifi (so weak it didn't work) and cell coverage almost non-existent (AT&T).

Close to a small beach and marina with a restaurant walking distance. Several dog parks but muddy/dirt. Laundry available for fee. Bath houses clean and large.

Good amenities on base. Gym not too far and massive.

Make sure you arrive at the base through the gate at the end of Dale Mabry, as it's the only gate campers can come thru. And be sure to go to the far right lane, even if it's got a red X showing the lane is closed. They will open the wider lane for you. You don't want to know why I know that or how close our Airstream was to the guard shacks if you don't go in the far lane!

Guide to Clearwater

RV parks in Clearwater, Florida sit along Florida's central Gulf Coast where humid subtropical conditions keep overnight lows rarely dropping below 50°F. Clearwater's campgrounds attract winter visitors with average January high temperatures around 70°F, making it a comfortable destination for year-round RV camping. Most RV resorts near Clearwater are located within a 10-mile radius of beaches, with sites generally offering limited shade from the Florida sun.

What to do

Beach access from campgrounds: Caladesi RV Park provides a convenient base for exploring the area's coastline. "The beach is a 5 minute drive and pet friendly! The Pinellas bike trail is also located right behind the park and easy to get on," reports Diana M. Many campers appreciate the proximity to water activities.

Explore local trails: The Pinellas Trail runs behind several campgrounds, offering miles of paved paths for cycling and walking. A reviewer at Caladesi mentioned, "The bike trail is right behind the park and has beautiful scenery," making it easy to explore without driving.

Visit Honeymoon Island State Park: Located just minutes from several RV parks, this natural area features four miles of beaches and a 2.5-mile hiking trail. Lloyd G. notes that Caladesi RV Park is "close to the beach and is within walking distance to some really nice restaurants," making it convenient to combine outdoor activities with dining options.

What campers like

Clean facilities: Many RV parks maintain their amenities well despite their age. At Encore Winter Quarters Manatee, one visitor noted, "The staff was very friendly and helpful. The grounds were ok overall and internet worked fine," highlighting the maintained facilities at this established campground.

Socialization opportunities: Several parks organize community activities. According to Jean M., "Winter Quarters Manatee is a beautiful resort with a lot of activities and amenities (which include 2 heated pools and a spa)." This creates opportunities for winter visitors to connect with others during extended stays.

Convenient shopping access: Campers appreciate how close most RV parks are to essential services. One reviewer at Winter Quarters Manatee mentioned, "Very convenient location and close to Walmart and Costco," highlighting the practical advantage for provisioning during longer stays.

What you should know

Park layouts and privacy: Most RV sites in the Clearwater area feature close quarters with minimal natural barriers between sites. At Avalon RV Resort, a camper observed, "The sites are a little tight but that's normal for most of Florida, specially in a heavy populated area like Clearwater."

Permanent residents: Many parks have a mix of travelers and long-term residents. Derick B. noted about Avalon RV Resort: "It's unbelievably quiet although it's right off of US 19," which may appeal to those seeking a settled atmosphere rather than a tourist-heavy environment.

Seasonal pricing fluctuations: Winter months (December-March) typically see the highest rates and lowest availability. A reviewer at Avalon RV Resort commented that it was "Expensive considering location and amenities," which reflects the premium winter pricing common throughout the area.

Noise considerations: Highway proximity affects some parks. At Encore Winter Quarters Pasco, Ryan D. cautioned, "Crossing the highway to get in the park was a nightmare as well. (Not the resorts fault, but be aware of it)," highlighting traffic challenges at certain locations.

Tips for camping with families

Pool facilities for children: Swimming pools provide recreation when beaches aren't convenient. At Encore Terra Ceia, Keith F. shared, "This place is 20 minutes away from several beaches and the TB Rays stadium, the Trop. The facilities were clean and we have a view of the pond with ducks," offering multiple entertainment options.

Pet accommodations: Many parks welcome pets with designated areas. Danna D. mentioned that at Terra Ceia, "They also have a nice size, fenced-in dog park with a dog walking path, so bring your furry friends!" This allows families traveling with pets to find appropriate facilities.

Age demographics: Families should consider the predominantly older resident population at most parks. According to one camper at Winter Quarters Pasco, "The rules are extremely strict, as this is mainly a retirement community. No fires, no noise, and no fun," suggesting families with active children might feel out of place at certain locations.

Tips from RVers

Site navigation challenges: Larger RVs face difficulties at several parks due to tight turns and narrow roads. At Sherwood Forest RV Resort, Bebo A. warned, "The sites are VERY close to one another, the slabs have a crazy arc to them, and the water hook ups are smack in the middle between yourself and the other sites."

Hookup positions: The placement of utilities varies between parks and can present challenges. Karen at Winter Quarters Manatee noted, "The electrical (30 amp and 50 amp) was farther back than the water, which wasn't a huge deal but might be inconvenient for some."

Surface conditions: Site surfaces range from concrete pads to dirt areas that can become problematic in wet weather. According to Millie D., "In my case, I have a small lot with a mobile home, literally about 8 feet along side of me," highlighting the tight quarters that can complicate setup and living arrangements during your stay.
