Best Dog-Friendly Camping near Lake George, CO

Mueller State Park Campground's pet-friendly policy allows dogs in specific designated sites, with over 132 campsites accommodating tent, RV, and cabin camping. Pets must remain on leashes no longer than 6 feet throughout the park. Blue Mountain Campground provides spacious sites for pet owners with picnic tables and fire pits at each location. The campsites are far enough apart that campers don't feel overcrowded while accommodating their pets. Eleven Mile State Park's Rocky Ridge and Stoll Mountain campgrounds permit pets with standard leash requirements, though pets must never be left unattended. The campground hosts are friendly and available if campers need assistance with pet-related questions or concerns.

Several hiking trails near Lake George allow pets, including the Hard Rock trailhead located directly in Blue Mountain Campground. A short approximately 3-mile out-and-back trail from Blue Mountain takes hikers and their dogs to a nice overlook of the South Platte River. For dispersed camping options with pets, Matukat Road and Tarryall Creek areas offer free primitive camping where pets are welcome, though these locations lack amenities like drinking water or toilets. Wildlife sightings are common in the area, with campers reporting deer near their sites, so keeping pets leashed is essential for their safety. Cell service varies by location, with Blue Mountain Campground offering consistent LTE data connection via Verizon, which can be helpful for pet owners needing to locate nearby veterinary services in case of emergency.

    Goose Creek Campground

    Perfect creekside camping

Goosecreek campground Access is via CR 211 either from CR 24 via Tarryall Road which turns into Matukat Road from Lake George or alternatively from the north from deckers.

The campground is absolutely beautiful. It sits right on goose Creek and the views are amazing. It sits down in the valley, but a short drive, and you’re absolutely up on top looking out over all of pike national forest.

Each site has its own picnic table and a fire ring. Each fee is $23 per night. There is also a day use fee of $10 if you just want to come in and use their facilities. The area is easily accessible from the main road. Once you are down into the campground, the sites are very spacious. They’re also reasonably far apart so you don’t feel like you’re sitting right on top of your neighbor. The Sites are big enough to pull a sizable rig into. They are not pull through sites. The sites do not appear to have an electric hook up or a water hook up so make sure you come prepared. It’s it feels a little bit more like dispersed camping, but with some Structure to it. So it’s look like they’re on a first come first serve basis, as it is a drop your fee in the envelope type of campground. Restrooms are clean and the whole area looks like it’s incredibly well taken care of by the campsite management team. At $23 a night. It is a good price for a well located campground. We pulled in on a Wednesday afternoon towards the end of August and the entire place was deserted. We literally had our choice of campsites. There was no cell service at the campground. There are no bathrooms on site.

    Chatfield State Park Campground

Popular and large campground near the lake

As it is very close to the city, the temperature stays consistent with Denver temps. So in the summer, it will not be as cool as some mountain spots. That being said, it is very easy to get to and you’ll have the lake right there to cool off!

Entrance into the state park is about $7/day. There is a dog park within the state park that allows off leash and has some ponds the dogs can swim in. Entrance to the dog park is $2.

    Diamond Campground & RV Park

Large Park Near Colorado Springs, Pikes Peak & More

This park is definitely well visited, but for good reason. It is located in Woodland Park, a lovely mountain town about 30-40 min. outside Colorado Springs. Lots of sites, mostly RV but there is a nice tent only section with a good number of spaces. We stayed overnight in early July and actually pitched our tent next to our family RV underneath the awning, safe from the summer showers that seem to pass thru almost daily in the summer months. Lots of amenities, including parks with play equipment for the kiddos, a dog park, nice bathrooms & showers.

    Salida RV Resort

Very nice new RV park. Right on the Arkansas River, great mountain views.

Very clean, large level spots with gravel and plenty of room in between RVs.  Great location, close to Salida and hiking & biking trails.  Directly on the Arkansas River -- river view spots are very nice and all spots have a view of the mountains, there's a bit of road noise from nearby highway.  Friendly staff, nice clubhouse with showers, pool table & fitness center, there's a small dog park and pickleball courts.  Direct access to Arkansas River for kayaks and small boats (walk down to river, can't drive there).  Campground internet was spotty but cell service is great so internet is very good if you have a hot spot.  Highly recommended, my only complaint is there's no pool or hot tub.

    Chatfield State Park Campground

    So much to do!

Chatfield is such a great park; I’ve spent so much time biking, kayaking, paddleboarding, spending time with family; picnics areas are even great to have lunch. The dog park is by far the best. Off leash- so much room; well taken care of and big lake for the dogs to swim. And it’s close to Denver - so we go here weekly!

    Haggards RV Campground

    One of Our Favorites!

We've been staying at this campground for several years as we travel between Arizona and Wyoming. The owners are so helpful, and the park is immaculate. Fantastic views, country feel, and safe. There's a seasonal pool, walking trails and a HUGE fenced dog park. Most spots are pull thru, and it's worth the short, easy drive from I-25.

Guide to Lake George

The Pike National Forest region surrounding Lake George offers expansive camping opportunities at 8,500 feet elevation. Summer daytime temperatures typically range from 65-85°F, dropping to 35-45°F at night. Most campgrounds in this area sit along the South Platte River corridor, creating a microclimate that supports diverse wildlife and vegetation compared to surrounding high desert terrain.

What to do

Hiking at Eleven Mile Canyon: Spillway Campground offers access to nearby trails with varying difficulty levels. "There is a trail above the camp that will take you up to some beautiful views through a meadow," notes Christina G., who also mentions "over 5 established bouldering routes and even more in the hill above camp."

Fishing opportunities: The South Platte River provides excellent fishing access. "This is a popular area, but the reservation system does not allow over crowding. Humming birds were every where," reports Ruth L. from Spillway Campground. Morning fishing tends to be most productive during summer months.

Rock climbing: Several formations around the area provide climbing opportunities. At Spillway Campground, "Right in the camp are over 5 established bouldering routes and even more in the hill above camp... Plus, it is right next to Pine Cone Dome for some awesome sport routes!" according to Christina G.

Wildlife viewing: The open meadows provide wildlife spotting opportunities. At Matukat Road Dispersed Camping, "Cattle roam freely throughout the property and you can hear coyotes at dusk and dawn," reports Chelsie B., who adds there's "Plenty of exploring and climbing around."

What campers like

Secluded sites: Round Mountain offers spacious sites away from crowds. "The location is great for having that Colorado forest feeling for sure with towering pines and great spacing around the campground itself," notes Crystal C., who adds that "sites which are both deep and wide" provide privacy even when the campground fills.

River access: Campers appreciate easy water access for recreation. At Spillway Campground, "views of the river can be seen from the campground," writes Rea M., while Stephen K. mentions "Easy access to the river for fly fishing. The Overlook trail is a short 0.5 mike hike up that has a great view."

Pet-friendly options: Dog friendly campgrounds near Lake George include Spruce Grove Campground where pets can enjoy the riverside setting. "This is a very popular spot for families with easy access to the South Platte for tubing and swimming," notes Amanda M., who cautions that sites "on the north end come up to a fence bordering private property."

Clean facilities: Many campgrounds maintain well-kept amenities. At Colorado Campground, "The campground is clean and well-maintained, the sites are good-sized and it's a short hike to decent fishing at Manitou Lake," according to Cody R.

What you should know

Reservation requirements: Many campgrounds fill quickly during peak season. At Spruce Grove, "Make reservations early for weekends, and expect this campground to be busy all summer long," advises Amanda M.

Road conditions: Access to some sites requires careful navigation. For Tarryall Creek Dispersed Camping, "The road in is a bit bumpy. I would not trade in a low clearance vehicle. Four-wheel-drive is needed if it should get wet or slippery," warns Chris P.

Wind exposure: Open areas can experience significant wind. At Tarryall, "Be aware the wind can get wild up here! Don't leave an awning out- ever and be prepared. But if you can take a gusty afternoon I think it's a great place!" shares Sarah F.

Fire restrictions: Seasonal fire bans are common. Crystal C. advises campers at Round Mountain to "Prepare for your stay ahead of time by bringing everything you could need to camp this includes firewood and water."

Tips for camping with families

Best sites for kids: Blue Mountain Campground provides good family accommodations. "Great location within Colorado's Mueller State Park. Easy access to trails, visitor center, and scenic drives. Nice large site with level gravel tent pad, large table, and nice fire pit," reports one visitor. Another camper notes, "A short approximately 3 mile out and back trail starting at the camp site takes you to a nice overlook of the South Platte River."

Water activities: Several locations offer water recreation for children. At Spruce Grove Campground, "The gorgeous Tarryall Creek runs along the Eastern edge and past the walk-in sites. All ages enjoy tubing on the creek for a 1/4 mile stretch. There are calm, protected shallows along the creek for supervised play as well," shares Jennie R.

Educational opportunities: Many campgrounds offer learning experiences. At Colorado Campground, families appreciate "ranger talks at the amphitheater," though these may be subject to seasonal availability.

Cell service considerations: Connectivity varies by location. At Blue Mountain Campground, Christopher B. notes, "In the campground I had consistent LTE data connection via Verizon and not far up the trail was getting 5G," which can be important for families needing emergency contact options.

Tips from RVers

Site selection for larger vehicles: Choose appropriate campgrounds for your RV size. At Colorado Campground, "Site 56 fit our 23' camper and truck with room to spare and provided wide expanse of campsite for the kids and dogs to play away from other campsites," reports Amanda M., who adds that "The campground road is easy to access and drive as it is paved and well maintained."

Power availability: Few campgrounds offer hookups. Amanda M. notes at Colorado Campground, "Some of the sites have electric but no sewer or water, and there is an extra $3 a night for electric."

Seasonal considerations: Weather impacts RV camping comfort. "Get below freezing so be ready for the cold," advises Bruce K. about Mueller State Park Campground, suggesting RVers bring adequate heating sources during spring and fall.

Dump station locations: Plan for waste management. At Blue Mountain Campground, facilities include a sanitary dump station on site, though some nearby campgrounds require driving to public dump stations in Woodland Park or Lake George.
