Description

State Park

Rocky Ridge campground offers the only electrical sites in the park nestled among rocky outcrops, along with non-electric sites with trees. Loops A, B and D offer 52 electrical hookups (30 amps, no trees). Loops C and E have some shade/trees. B-E Loops are closed in the off season. Eleven Mile Canyon Recreation Area is located below the dam of the Eleven Mile Reservoir near Lake George in the southeast corner of South Park. The narrow, dirt road traversing the canyon used to be the old Colorado Midland Railroad bed before the dam and reservoir were constructed. Unlike the reservoir area, which has an open basin and rangeland type topography, the canyon itself is forested, lush, and rocky. Eleven Mile Canyon cuts through the plain holding the South Platte River in its rocky bottom. As the river is unleashed from the dam above, its twists and crashes against huge boulders lining the canyon floor. A canopy of large trees provides a screen of shade that floats across the canyon with the moving sun. Eleven Mile Canyon is an unexpected paradise. Eleven Mile Canyon is generally accessible year round; however, service are reduced during the winter months. https://cpw.state.co.us/placestogo/parks/ElevenMile/Documents/11Mile-RockyRidge.pdf

Nice state park

Windy place to be in July. Been here before. Nice mellow vibe; weekdays are very empty, weekends are packed.

Nice campground

Stayed at a non-electric site (loop C) but we have a solar and lithium batteries so no electricity at a site makes no difference to us as long as sun can get to the solar panels. Campground fills up during the week but the non-electrical loops seem to be less crowded. Weekdays were nice. Dump station close by to use honey wagon. Water spigot close by to use water bladder. Most sites are spaced out enough for privacy. Have future reservations at same site. Beware: road to access state park is full of potholes, passed signs indicating road work to start on June 1st.

Gorgeous but rudest campers ever

This campground was really gorgeous, not extremely well-maintained but maintained enough.

However, many of the campers had complete disregard for other people and the environment. We had to ask multiple sets of children to stop running through our campsite (we have dogs that hate that), everybody’s dogs were running loose (I saw one go after a pack of deer and several almost-dogfights occurred), and people blatantly disregarded campground rules in place to protect the environment.

We were there on a Thursday and it was incredibly peaceful, then as soon as the weekend came it was full of drunk people yelling and kids and dogs running wild. We switched our site for more privacy, which helped but the front desk is weirdly intense about us verification for it - I couldn’t switch because the site wasn’t in my name so my partner had to walk all the way to the front. I don’t get why they’re so strict at the front desk then let people do whatever they want in the campground.

This place is great midweek, I’d avoid the weekend. Some sites have electric, most are far from water. Pretty pricey for what you get. Also the road up has tons of potholes, but we were able to avoid basically all of them in our 20 foot van by just swerving into the middle as needed. Probably harder if pulling anything behind you but lots of people do it.

Single night stay

We stayed here in August of 2021 before traveling to the Lost Creek Wilderness to backpack, and this park was an easy way to stay close to the trailhead the morning before departure. The park was packed, with most spots full by the time night fell. We were near a primitive toilet and had some more shade and privacy than most other spots. This loop was farther away from the lake but near a trail that led to a large boulder formation. We had trouble finding potable water and just filtered water from the lake, but we also just wanted to test out our filter systems. Plenty of space for our truck and two tents, beautiful view of the lake and although there was noise from others nearby it wasn’t excessive.

Great family camping

We really enjoyed the hike in/boat in camp site.  Great for families with young kids that are not ready for full-on backpacking.

Our site was about a 15 min canoe ride from parking lot.  There isn't a lot of privacy because all the sites are fairly close.  Bathrooms were clean and stocked.  There are plenty of bear boxes for everyone to use.  There are also trash cans so you don't have to pack out trash.

Easy Breezy Beautiful

Plenty of drive up tent sites and a few walk in campsites that feel a little more remote. Campground makes for a great base camp since you are just a quick drive down the street to some scenic hiking along Coyote Ridge & Midland trails and the proximity to the lake. Beautiful views year around here. Bring some extra tent stakes with you because the wind can really blow hard here.

Windy Beauty

This is a very popular State Park Reservoir. In addition to a reservation you will also need a parking pass unless you hold an annual pass. This campsite has a fantastic view and if you have a boat, well then lucky you! If you don't own a boat you could check out the 11 Mile Marina. They have kayaks, canoes and pontoon boats for rent and the store has almost anything you might have forgot and more. No swimming is allowed at this campground.

We camped at Loop E and Rocky Ridge has tons of large boulders throughout the park. The children love to climb and play on these rocks (If you don't want children around then I do not recommend a campsite in the 100s with boulders on a weekend) and so do the gulls (they will wake you up in the morning) .

The campsite was nearly full which means the vault toilet was not as clean as I would have hoped and there was almost always a wait during the dinner to bedtime period to use it. There were other vaults nearby, but not ideal walking distance in the middle of the night. The rangers were pretty strict on the noise levels as soon as "after hours" hits as they patrolled the loop knocking on campers to turn the radios off....but also kudos to them for checking on campfires to prevent forest fires!

The beauty of the water at sunset and the family friendly car camping experience makes this campground enjoyable. Spinney State Park is also just down the road if you want another fishing location.

Nice Views

Camped here for the first time we ever took the RV out. Visited in mid/end of September. It got cold at night and we were thankful to have brought an extra space heater. Views were nice. There was little vegetation in the area which made high winds even stronger. There wasn't a fire ban at the time but a campfire was impractical due to the winds.

RV spots were about average distance from neighbors. Spots were big enough and easy enough to park a travel trailer in. Spots didn't have water hookups, which is normally one of the big reasons for going to an RV site and dealing with neighbors. Using the dump station was easy in the off-season, staff let you schedule a dump time days ahead of time.

The campground was definitely intended for use by visitors on fishing trips at the nearby lake. Multiple individuals parked boats within their RV spots.

Peaceful and nice view

Stayed for 3 nights at this campsite. Plenty of space between neighbors, vault toilets, water and electric hookups (no sewer). Seemed like the dump was closed when I was there. You still have to pay the 9 bucks for day use even if you have a reservation. The sites had sand so RV can get messy.

Family stay

I stayed here with my family to include ages 65 to 6. We reserved two neighboring sites with a large rock inbetween that the 6 year old loved exploring.

The scenery was beautiful with a view of the sunset a short paved road walk away. We had no shade or wind blockers at our sites, both were an issue during our summer, thunderstorm season stay. Our closest bathroom wasn't the cleanest, but the next closest was better.  The rangers were awesome and the 6 year old completed the ranger program with their help.  The marina store was busy with long lines, but great for forgotten items and ice cream.

Great hiking and kayaking

We camped in D Loop, space 89 and had a nice view of the lake. It was 1.5 mile drive to the parking lot for the hiking trailhead and kayak launching site. At this site you have to carry the kayaks to the lake, about 100 yards.

There was a clean toilet at the campground but no water or showers. The trash bin was locked most of the time and we had to take trash to the visitor center bin.

On calm days the kayaking along the southeast shore was amazing with lots of rock formations and islands. That part of the lake has lots of shallow hazards which keeps motor boats away.

The hiking trails wind along the rocky shore and provide lots of vistas of the lake and the mountains.

The electrical hook up did not work at our first camp site however by calling the reservation phone number we were able to be redirected at another available site. Because we had printed out our reservation number and had it available, the process was completed by phone pretty efficiently even though the visitor center was closed.

Amazing views / secluded!

This place was incredibly beautiful!! The views were insane. The lake was beautiful but don’t plan on getting in the water. At least currently, there’s some toxic algae. Don’t let your furry friends drink it either. We decided upon E-112 in the Rocky Ridge Campground near the marina. There were trees and boulders which proved to be very helpful with the intense wind that rolls through the area. There are no bear boxes so clean up well and lock up your supplies in your vehicle accordingly. There was a pack of animals (we think coyotes) that came through in the night and woke us up because they were so loud and seemed so close. We were in a roof top tent (RTT) mounted to the back of our Tacoma. We did need leveling blocks for our truck for the site we chose but it was worth it because of the views and privacy of E112. We came during the week before Labor Day so that was awesome because it was nearly empty. I’m not sure if it’s usually full, but it was so empty when we were there.

If this campground had been full, then it would’ve been a different experience. But we were one of the only 2 tent campers on the entire E loop of the Rocky Ridge Campground. This lake/reservoir is secluded and has several campgrounds around it. The one we chose is by the Recreation Area. I did not see any showers or info on showers so I think that amenity is incorrect on Dyrt...or perhaps I could’ve researched the grounds a little more? :)

The toilets are vault toilets and not serviced frequently given that when we opened the door to the one close to us about 75 flies burst forth into the light and the TP roll was stained looking. So if you prefer plumbing, don’t tent camp here. Reservations were required but we have Verizon and had service/were able to do our reservation onsite last minute.

We loved this campground!

Great park and reservoir in the high mountain plains

Eleven mile is a large reservoir by Colorado standards and has tons of campsites, all around the lake from great walk-in tent sites, lake shore and small to large loops.  One section of the park has great trails in the trees, but the majority is in open plains which can sometimes get windy, but still is a great place.  The facilities are well maintained, all sites have a picnic table, fire pit and two loops have electrical hookups.   The central area has water spigots, a shower house, flush toilets, laundry and a dump station.  The other campgrounds have vault toilets and hand pumps for water.

Just outside the state park boundary is a small convenience store for grocery (limited) and angler/fishing supply.  The lake can get busy in the summer, but it never seems too crowded.  Also, like many state parks they do have an educational program and offer small exhibits at the amphitheater on the weekends.

No shade, picnic table was gross

The best part of this campground is the large lake. There is no shade and it was very windy when we were there (September). The picnic tables were filthy (appeared to be years of accumulated bird poo) and I spent an hour scrubbing ours before I was willing to put my tablecloth on it. The bench was just as bad.

That said, mornings were calm so we went out on the water early.

Awesome Camping!!

I've been camping here for years, it's an incredible place to experience the true outdoors! I've always camped in the backcountry sites because of the isolation and scenic charm. Your closest neighbor is about 100yrds away depending on which site you're at. A short hike down to the river is a great day adventure, playing in the water or fishing. I've never had a bad experience here.

Seclusion

Eleven Mile Canyon is a hidden gem. Water and vault toilets only, no power at the sites. The road in is a long dirt road. There’s lots of fishing all along. There are multiple areas to camp. Lots of trees and shade. We’ve done both tent and camper camping but I’d say not to try to bring in something too long. It’s a short drive to 11 Mile reservoir up above the dam.
