Best RV Parks & Resorts near Heeney, CO

Several RV parks surround the Heeney, Colorado area, providing convenient access to mountain recreation. Red Mountain RV Park in Kremmling offers full hookup sites with 50-amp service and is big-rig friendly, with level gravel pads and adequate spacing between sites. Sun Outdoors Rocky Mountain in Granby features premium RV sites with full hookups, concrete pads, and amenities including a general store and sanitary dump station. Tiger Run RV Resort near Breckenridge accommodates larger motorhomes with spacious pull-through sites and complete hookups. Williams Fork Reservoir Campground provides more basic RV camping with no hookups but does offer a dump station for self-contained units. One RV traveler noted, "Our site was a pull-through on concrete pad with ample seating, a table, a fire pit, and a propane grill. Full hook ups were available, though we didn't connect water since temperatures were reaching freezing at night."

Mountain elevation affects RV camping logistics throughout the region. Many parks sit above 8,000 feet, requiring proper vehicle preparation for steep grades and thin air. Cell service varies significantly between locations, with stronger signals at developed RV resorts and spotty coverage at reservoir campgrounds. Most RV parks near Heeney are seasonal, typically operating from May through October, though Middlefork RV Resort and Cottonwood RV Campground remain open year-round. Dump stations are available at most developed RV parks, but reservoir campgrounds may have limited facilities. Navigation to some mountain RV parks involves narrow roads with tight turns that can challenge larger rigs. Advance reservations are strongly recommended during summer and fall foliage seasons when campgrounds frequently reach capacity, especially for premium sites with full hookups and 30/50 amp electrical service.

    Denver West-Central City KOA

    Mountain High

Yes Mountain High!! 8100’ high. 7 miles off I-70 at Idaho Springs. 25 miles into outskirts of Denver. Don’t worry they have oxygen! Not kidding!!

Nice campground, friend staff, laundry, fun little gift shop with some food stuffs, beer and liquor. Pizza cooked there but we didn’t try it.

Our space was a big rig space on concrete pad with ample seating, a table, a fire pit, and a propane grill stove… use you own propane! Full hook ups. It was still reaching freezing at night and so we didn’t hook up our water.

Clean restrooms and showers. Playground and dog friendly. Staff was extremely friendly and helpful. Would definitely stay here again.

Glacier Basin Campground — Rocky Mountain National Park

    Wonderful Stay

I have a 22’ travel trailer I pull behind an F150. Since this campground is inside Rocky Mountain National Park, the roads are all paved.

The campground sites are situated around one-way driving loops, which are quite narrow. Best to pay attention to which side of the loop your site is on so your trailer door doesn’t open up onto the road. I think they error on the side of caution when it comes to the size of trailer fitting into each spot. At least for mine. They said max 26’ (trailer + tow vehicle), but I’m closer to 32’ and I fit fine. That may not be true of all campsites though. There is parking very close by if your tow vehicle can’t squeeze into the site.

My site didn’t have a whole lot of trees, but they planted a bunch of small ones to try and fix this years from now. Sites were level and had lots of space. Each had a fire pit and picnic table.

There were no hookups and no cell service (Verizon). They did have trash drop offs, water for cleaning pans and dishes, and bathrooms. It was very quiet at night. Generators are allowed but only for a couple times a day during short windows.

Glacier Basin campground is just a few miles from the Bear Lake trailhead. It was very nice to stay inside the park. Vehicle passes to get into National Parks were still required when I stayed and the lines to get in were very long and slow.

    Gore Creek Campground

So good, I don’t want to tell you about it.

Gore Creek Campground is a true gem of the National Forest Service. If you are looking for a great boondocking location that is close to great trails and breathtaking views, this just might be the place for you. The entrance to the campground is ~2 miles off of I-70 Exit 180 on Bighorn Road. Only 10 minutes from Vail Village and 25 minutes from Frisco.

We stayed in Site #8, which provided plenty of room for our 22’ travel trailer and pickup. The sites each have a large picnic table and fire ring.

Pit toilets are spread through the campground and were very clean and well maintained. The campground hosts do a great job of keeping everything tidy and looking great. They also have bundles of firewood for sale for $7 at their site just inside the entrance to the campground.

I can’t say enough about this place. It’s probably my favorite spot to camp in Colorado. I almost didn’t post this review for fear of the secret getting out.

About 45 minutes from Grand Lake entrance of Rocky Mountain National Park. 9 mile dirt road to get to the campground. Nice level sites each with picnic/tent area. Vault toilets were clean. North Park Campground — State Forest State Park

    Old KOA turned around!

This used to be a KOA campground that the state took back over and has refurbished. Brand new full hook up connection, connections, picnic tables, fire rings, gravel area with decomposed granite, shower house is BRAND NEW. So quiet and easy on and off the highway. Some highway noise but no semis and little traffic. Very little cell service- like 1 bar on Verizon. Would definitely come back. Little services so bring what you need. Walden is 20 miles down the road. We had a great pull through site with only one neighbor backing up to forest.

    FR 48 Dispersed Camping

Awesome spot with beautiful mountain and forest views and close to a lake

We pulled in around 4pm on a Sunday. We went to the 3rd dirt road on the left to find a spot available. Only one other camper was there and the area could easily accommodate 4 without being too close to each others. Very easy to find. To the north Turquoise Lake is 1/2 mile away. There are mountain bike /hiking trails everywhere around the lake. Even though the space we were in was very spacious it felt secluded and we really could not see the other RV. We pulled our 40 feet toy hauler easily. The spot was leveled and clean. A stone fire pit was there and lots of wood had been left by the previous campers.

    Prospector Campground

Amazing! But tight for big rigs!

OMG! What a beautiful campground. I wouldn't necessarily recommend it for big rigs. We have a 38' Class A and it was tight. Got in a out safely, but I think it all depends on the site you pick. Site 39C was awesome, private, secluded, couldn't see any neighbors. We were able to pull the Class A in forward and easily back it out upon exiting. Simple walk to the Reservoir, with hiking & biking all around. We'd love to return, but won't until we downsize!

Guide to Heeney

RV parks near Heeney, Colorado sit at elevations between 8,000-9,500 feet, creating unique high-altitude camping conditions. Situated along the Blue River Valley and surrounded by the White River National Forest, these campgrounds experience significant temperature drops at night, even in summer months. Cell service varies dramatically across the region, with eastern campgrounds typically offering better connectivity than those on the western shores of Green Mountain Reservoir.

What to do

Fishing opportunities: Williams Fork Reservoir Campground offers excellent fishing access with convenient shore access points. "We stayed in one of the pull through sites on the east campground side... Beautiful views, nice breeze that helped with the mosquitoes. Plenty of bathrooms. Good for boaters as well, although we only brought a kayak," notes a camper who visited in July 2025.

Water activities: Sun Outdoors Rocky Mountain in Granby provides multiple water-based recreation options. "Huge place! We loved our 6 nights here. Set up like a Disney property but in the mountains. It's not even 1/3 full & feels great but at full capacity it could feel very overwhelming. Very nice bathroom/shower houses, nice pool area & common grounds," reports a visitor who stayed for nearly a week.

Gold panning: Middlefork RV Resort in Fairplay offers on-site gold panning activities. "Listen this place isn't awesome. It doesn't do much well. This place has on site gold panning! I cant give this place much praise but the gold panning did it for me!" shares an enthusiastic visitor who appreciated this unique activity.

What campers like

Proximity to ski resorts: Tiger Run RV Resort provides year-round access to nearby ski areas. "Looking for a Summit County RV park, there is no better. We stayed in March for some spring skiing. Not only was it one of few if not the only park open during the winter months but is located right in between Breckenridge, Keystone and A Basin. Vail is even less than an hour," explains a winter visitor.

Clean facilities: Idaho Springs RV Resort maintains exceptionally clean shower and bathroom facilities. "This is a great spot! We stayed at site 39 and it was perfectly level with beautiful surroundings. Great view of the mountains right outside our window. Facilities are clean and the showers are nice and large with plenty of room to shower and get dressed," mentions a satisfied camper.

River access: River Dance RV Resort offers direct river access for cooling off during summer travels. "Driving through the Vail valley and we needed a place to camp... Reasonable price. Kids loved playing frisbee in the field and swimming in the river. Just had some construction and sewers aren't hooked up at sites but there is a dump station. Showers are clean as are the bathrooms," reports a family who made an unplanned stop.

What you should know

Seasonal operations: Many RV parks near Heeney operate only during warmer months, though some remain open year-round. "This campground is in a great location, close to Grand Lake and the other lakes surrounding it, and RMNP. The people there are very friendly and welcoming. They have a variety of sites for small and large trailers and some of them seem hard to get into, but they come help you get backed in," notes a visitor to Grand Lake / Rocky Mountain National Park KOA Journey.

Elevation considerations: High elevation affects propane usage, water systems, and vehicle performance. "We arrived and were warmly greeted by a very friendly and enthusiastic young man. Check in was easy, we had a great spot (RV33) which had privacy due to being surrounded by bushes on the sides between the abutting sites, and just a grassy lawn behind us," shares a camper who appreciated the privacy of their site.

Reservation requirements: Most campgrounds near Heeney require advance reservations during peak season from June through September. "This RV resort is a fantastic location & open year-round. The park is clean and has lots of shade. The price is a little steep but you get lots of amenities. There is an indoor pool, two spas & men's and women's shower and dressing rooms," explains a visitor to Tiger Run RV Resort.

Tips for camping with families

Entertainment options: Sun Outdoors Rocky Mountain offers extensive family-friendly amenities. "I'm a mountain girl! Like grab your back pack and hike in! Then we had kids and splurged on a camper... and now this place has me over here laying pool side... drink in hand, head over heels about glamping. Seriously I loved this so much. They have an amazing pool! Bowling alley, arcade, restaurant, bars (yes more than one!)," raves a parent who visited.

Swimming locations: Several RV parks around Heeney have designated swimming areas for children. "Beautiful campsite with pool, arcade, bowling, kayak rentals, awesome gym…so much more! The kids will be entertained here, and it's a short drive to Rocky Mountain National park," reports a family who visited Sun Outdoors Rocky Mountain.

Bug preparation: Mosquitoes can be intense, especially at dusk near water. "This was a great place to stop for the night. Plenty of campsites, fire rings, bathrooms, not to mention the beautiful view of the reservoir. At dusk it was mosquito city!! 🦟 swarms of the lil punks. But some bug spray and a citronella candle and I was good," advises a visitor to Williams Fork Reservoir Campground.

Tips from RVers

Site selection: At Peak to Peak RV Park in Nederland, sites vary significantly in size and levelness. "Kind of a weird 'campground'. Never actually saw or met the owner/grounds keeper/anyone but reserved online. Was overpriced for the lot that it was but it was a minute walk from knotted root brewery and the rest of the town. Only has 50 amp plugs," notes an RV camper who stayed there.

Dump station availability: Not all rv parks in Heeney, Colorado area offer full hookups. "We weren't planning on staying in Fairplay, but it was getting late so we tried Middlefork RV Resort. The sites are all gravel, ours was nice and level. You can get either full hookups or water/electric only. There is a dump station on site," explains an RVer who made an unplanned stop.

Navigation challenges: Some RV parks have difficult access roads requiring careful navigation. "It was a bit confusing trying to navigate the access roads in the campground as it was extremely large. However it had several amenities including a pool, free showers (that campers from outside of town can come use for a small fee), full hook-ups, access to the many off highway trails," reports a visitor to Red Mountain RV Park.
