What to do
Mountain biking trails: Access numerous trails from Golden Gate Canyon State Park where multiple loops connect through pine forests. "Golden Gate Canyon State Park is enormous. The options for trails are endless. Great for mountain biking or hiking enthusiasts," notes Steph A.
Visit historic sites: Central City was once known as "the richest square mile on earth" during the gold rush. Explore mining ruins and ghost towns within short drives from most campgrounds. "Nederland is close enough to run into town if needed," mentions Nicci M. from Gordon Gulch Dispersed Area.
Fishing opportunities: Several alpine lakes near Central City offer trout fishing with Colorado fishing licenses required. "Chinns Lake is a beautiful spot for dispersed camping with plenty of campsites scattered around the lake and surrounding area. Some are right next to the water, which makes for an incredible view and easy access for fishing," explains Zack L.
Panoramic viewpoints: Drive to lookout points for continental divide views. "We caught a great view of a moose. Panorama Point had a breath taking view," shares Diana M. about her experience in the area.
What campers like
Cooler temperatures: The high elevation camping provides relief from summer heat. "It was nice but the sites we saw were numbered. The only disappointing thing was right before dusk was about an hour of shooting, constant and annoying. After dark, very quiet even though it was close to the road," reports Nicci M.
Wildlife viewing: Columbine Campground offers forested sites where wildlife sightings are common. "The campsites are clean and easy to get to. Great for families with little ones. You are pretty close to your neighbors and it's busy," mentions Meghan H.
Proximity to casinos: For those interested in entertainment, Central City's historic gambling district sits just minutes from most camping areas. "This KOA is perched up in between the most beautiful outlooks. The staff is so kind and welcoming, and the amenities are well kept!" according to Saige M.
Dark night skies: Limited light pollution allows for excellent stargazing. "Killer night skies," reports Fabein D. about the Kelly Dahl Campground.
What you should know
Bear awareness: Bears are active throughout the region, requiring proper food storage. "Moose visitors at dawn and evening, and hungry bears scavenging for food at night is a common occurrence. Luckily my car alarm scared them off pretty easily," warns Amanda V.
Weather preparation: Temperatures can drop below freezing even in summer months. "It snowed on me overnight and the road was still very passable. It was pretty empty in January, one big pile of trash that was unfortunate and a few people seemed to be there long term," reports Catalina H.
Limited services: Most campgrounds have vault toilets only and no shower facilities. Pack extra water and supplies. "When we where there, there were bear in the campground... The sites are not very level so be prepared to use your blocks," notes Rich M.
