Best Pet-Friendly Camping near Central City, CO

Denver West-Central City KOA accepts pets with a dedicated exercise area for dogs. This campground includes full hookup sites, both pull-through and back-in, along with tent sites, cabins, and glamping accommodations. While the dog area consists of a small square of astroturf, the surrounding mountains provide excellent hiking opportunities where leashed pets can join their owners. Located just 2-3 miles from Central City and Black Hawk, this pet-friendly campground offers clean restrooms, showers, a playground, and a camp store with camping essentials. The campground sits at approximately 9,000 feet elevation and features spectacular mountain views, though the terrain is primarily gravel with few trees except along the edges.

Columbine Campground provides another dog-friendly camping option near Central City with access to forested areas where dogs can explore while leashed. The campground is accessed via bumpy roads but accommodates both tent campers and RVs. Sites are relatively close together, though the surrounding trees offer decent privacy. Visitors should be aware of nearby ATV traffic and a shooting range that can create occasional noise. Dog owners should pack extra water for pets as the mountain elevation can cause quicker dehydration. Wildlife is abundant in this area, so keeping pets leashed and supervised is essential for their safety. The proximity to Central City/Black Hawk (less than 3 miles) makes this an ideal base camp for exploring historic mining towns while camping with dogs.

    Spruce Lake RV Park

    Great location for RMNL

The selling point of this campground is location. It’s as close to Rocky Mountain National Park as you can get without actually camping on NPS property. You are completely surrounded by the mountains and the views are amazing. There’s a beautiful river flowing nearby. Easy access to Estes Park. I biked into downtown and back easily. Close to a great little market and several restaurants. Sites are very tight with no privacy unless you are along the edges of the park. Nice laundry facilities, mini golf, and a small pond. There’s a small dog park but I’d recommend taking your dog to the city’s dog park about 10 minutes away. It’s worth the drive and your dog can go swimming on a beach.

    Denver West-Central City KOA

    Feel let down

    The good:

The staff is pleasant and the view from sites 1-10 is good.

    Showers are clean.

    Everything else:

After viewing the website, we thought this would be a good place to stop after Estes Park. We expected trees and a quick drive into Denver.

This place is NOT near Denver. I don’t think they should call it Denver West, it should just be Central City.

Unfortunately, the campground only has a few trees along the edge of the campground. The rv sites were on a big gravel lot, cleared of trees. It felt like a giant parking lot. It was dusty and hot.

They are dog friendly, but other than a very small square of astroturf, there’s nothing but gravel. No place to walk a dog.

Not KOAs fault —As for Central City, we did not know it was mainly casinos. It felt as though the campground was full of people there to visit the casinos.

Other campers had loud TVs going and that made it difficult for the kids to sleep.

Ultimately, we decided to check out early and lose the money.

Columbine Campground - Outside of Denver

    Last Minute Getaway to Columbine

Great campground ! Easy to access from Black Hawk/Central City. Tons of forests to explore nearby. It was very busy- sign said campground full but after a drive around all the sites we found one that was open! A little noisy with many off-road dunebuggys driving around. It was a great time though, would definitely visit again because of the easy access from Denver.

Cold Springs - Arapaho Roosevelt Nf (CO)

Base Camp for Blackhawk, Central City, and Golden Gate Canyon State Park

This campground is a great central location to Golden Gate Canyon State Park and Black Hawk/Central City area. The sites are super secluded and you really feel like you are in the forest.  The only downside is the highway noise.  Try to pick a site as far away from the highway as possible.

    Chatfield State Park Campground

Popular and large campground near the lake

As it is very close to the city, the temperature stays consistent with Denver temps. So in the summer, it will not be as cool as some mountain spots. That being said, it is very easy to get to and you’ll have the lake right there to cool off!

Entrance into the state park is about $7/day. There is a dog park within the state park that allows off leash and has some ponds the dogs can swim in. Entrance to the dog park is $2.

    Denver West-Central City KOA

    Denver West is a stretch..

This location is about 39 miles from Downtown Denver or about 45-60 mins (with traffic). They should just say Central City KOA in the title. Central city is a cool mining town and you would never know it was there without the KOA #1 and the Casinos #2, its like a mini Las Vegas...if you don't like the gambling thing then I recommend Idaho Springs which is real close by, and if you have a high ground clearance vehicle, you can take the mountain road option to get to, saw a lot of old mining relics and wildlife. The rv site was extremely clean and maintained. They even escort you to your spot when you arrive. I'm new to the RV site camping thing, but this was one of the nicest sites we've stayed at. With my rig (roof top tent) I don't have a bathroom and count on the bathroom at the park, my site was a fair distance from the facilities, would have been nice to be a little closer. However we enjoyed our stay and will stay here again.

Guide to Central City

Camping near Central City, Colorado puts you at elevations above 8,000 feet where summer temperatures average 10-15 degrees cooler than Denver. The area sits within the Arapaho National Forest with mixed pine and aspen stands, particularly vibrant during fall color changes in mid-September. Most campgrounds in this region remain open from late May through early October, closing during winter months due to heavy snowfall.

What to do

Mountain biking trails: Access numerous trails from Golden Gate Canyon State Park where multiple loops connect through pine forests. "Golden Gate Canyon State Park is enormous. The options for trails are endless. Great for mountain biking or hiking enthusiasts," notes Steph A.

Visit historic sites: Central City was once known as "the richest square mile on earth" during the gold rush. Explore mining ruins and ghost towns within short drives from most campgrounds. "Nederland is close enough to run into town if needed," mentions Nicci M. from Gordon Gulch Dispersed Area.

Fishing opportunities: Several alpine lakes near Central City offer trout fishing with Colorado fishing licenses required. "Chinns Lake is a beautiful spot for dispersed camping with plenty of campsites scattered around the lake and surrounding area. Some are right next to the water, which makes for an incredible view and easy access for fishing," explains Zack L.

Panoramic viewpoints: Drive to lookout points for continental divide views. "We caught a great view of a moose. Panorama Point had a breath taking view," shares Diana M. about her experience in the area.

What campers like

Cooler temperatures: The high elevation camping provides relief from summer heat. "It was nice but the sites we saw were numbered. The only disappointing thing was right before dusk was about an hour of shooting, constant and annoying. After dark, very quiet even though it was close to the road," reports Nicci M.

Wildlife viewing: Columbine Campground offers forested sites where wildlife sightings are common. "The campsites are clean and easy to get to. Great for families with little ones. You are pretty close to your neighbors and it's busy," mentions Meghan H.

Proximity to casinos: For those interested in entertainment, Central City's historic gambling district sits just minutes from most camping areas. "This KOA is perched up in between the most beautiful outlooks. The staff is so kind and welcoming, and the amenities are well kept!" according to Saige M.

Dark night skies: Limited light pollution allows for excellent stargazing. "Killer night skies," reports Fabein D. about the Kelly Dahl Campground.

What you should know

Bear awareness: Bears are active throughout the region, requiring proper food storage. "Moose visitors at dawn and evening, and hungry bears scavenging for food at night is a common occurrence. Luckily my car alarm scared them off pretty easily," warns Amanda V.

Weather preparation: Temperatures can drop below freezing even in summer months. "It snowed on me overnight and the road was still very passable. It was pretty empty in January, one big pile of trash that was unfortunate and a few people seemed to be there long term," reports Catalina H.

Limited services: Most campgrounds have vault toilets only and no shower facilities. Pack extra water and supplies. "When we where there, there were bear in the campground... The sites are not very level so be prepared to use your blocks," notes Rich M.
