York Gulch Road provides dispersed camping opportunities in the mountainous terrain northwest of Central City. At elevations between 8,500-9,500 feet, temperatures can drop significantly at night even in summer months. The area features several designated dispersed camping spots with established fire rings along a dirt road that winds through a mix of forested areas and open spaces.
What to do
Hiking nearby trails: Golden Gate Canyon State Park offers extensive hiking options just 30 minutes from Central City. "The park feels like it's far from the city, but the drive is easy for a weekend camping trip!" notes Steph A. about Golden Gate Canyon State Park.
Fishing access: Gross Reservoir provides fishing opportunities within driving distance. "The Gross Resevoir outside Boulder is a great place for people to go for some recreation just outside the city. People commonly drop in a paddleboard or kayak," explains Daniel B. about Winiger Ridge at Gross Reservoir.
Stargazing: The dark skies at York Gulch Road create excellent stargazing conditions. "Great place dark skies lots of space. Sites weren't marked like other places I've been but I expected it being dispersed," shares Wil L. about York Gulch Road.
Equestrian camping near Central City: Bring horses to certain designated areas for equestrian camping near Central City, Colorado. While not available at York Gulch specifically, Bear Creek Lake Park offers horse-friendly facilities. "Loved the hiking and biking trails. Beautiful lake for swimming and paddle sports. Will definitely be returning for the archery and horseback riding," mentions Joshua H.
What campers like
Privacy and seclusion: The further up York Gulch Road you travel, the more private the camping spots become. "I'm currently here and it's pretty great. Nice campgrounds. Not close to anyone. Road up is 2wd. Keep heading up the small road to get to all the secluded camp grounds," reports Heather P.
Convenient location: York Gulch's proximity to highways makes it accessible for weekend trips. "Close to town easy to get to. I drove here December 16th on a sunny day. Take the exit onto Fall River Road from the highway, a short road. You are then soon connected with forest service road of sorts York gultch," explains Conner from York Gulch Road.
Mountain views: Nearby Guanella Pass offers exceptional mountain scenery. "I would definitely recommend camping here if you're looking to camp somewhat close to Denver. There are a lot of dispersed sites to choose from while driving Guanella Pass that I was able to be picky. I found an excellent spot right along the creek with a mountain view," says Paige S. about Guanella Pass.
What you should know
Road conditions vary: Access roads can be challenging depending on your vehicle. "Definitely have a truck or suv! We have an Audi wagon and it was quite sketchy in some parts and we only made it 2 miles up the road before deciding to not bottom out," advises Alison C. about Kirby Gulch.
Wildlife awareness: The area has active wildlife including moose. "Had great views and nice weather, no water though but there is a lake down the road. 4x4 Required as roads were rough," notes Marco Antonio B. about camping at Kirby Gulch.
Residential areas nearby: Some camping spots on York Gulch Road are close to residential areas. "I didn't actually camp there for the night I went up there and you have to drive through a residential area you there's camping spots prior to a couple of them but they are still really close to where people live," explains Thomas H. about Kirby Gulch.
Tips for camping with families
Choose established campgrounds for facilities: Families may appreciate the amenities at Golden Gate Canyon State Park. "This was a phenomenal state park. Many multiuse trails. Get up early and drive mountain base road...we caught a great view of a moose. Panorama Point had a breath taking view," recommends Diana M. about Reverend's Ridge Campground.
Pack for cold nights: Even summer nights can be cold at higher elevations. "If you're looking for a quick easy weekend camping trip with well maintained trails, you should check this park out. Campsites are a quick walk from the parking lot and vault toilets. Make sure you bring a heater or good sleeping bag because it can get pretty cool at night here in the summer time," advises Doug C. about Staunton State Park.
Plan for no facilities: Dispersed camping areas lack restrooms and water. "York Gulch is free camping with hiking and creek access. There are no bathrooms or picnics tables so please clean up after yourself," explains Hayley K. about Kirby Gulch.
Tips from RVers
Size limitations: Larger RVs may find navigating York Gulch Road challenging. "Positives: The drive is gorgeous, the road is mostly smooth. Negatives: It is a pretty steep ascent. There were a few spots that would have been ideal but we're already taken. We looked a little further ahead and the road got rough. Take away: If you have anything bigger than a sprinter van, I wouldn't try this," advises Melanie S. about York Gulch Road.
Lower elevation sites preferred: For RVers, sites at lower elevations are more accessible. "Campground is very clean. Loop E (electric hookups) is very spacious and well laid out. Every campsite is a pull thru allowing you situate anywhere along the paved area to best suit your needs. Mostly level, fire rings, and very large metal picnic tables. Enormous amount of room," notes Dennis G. about Reverend's Ridge Campground.
Consider seasonal access: Winter camping is possible but requires planning. "Small pull behind campers fit back here but not large RVs. There isn't space to turn around once you get on the road until you get to the end that has a parking area for the trail head," reports Hayley K. about Kirby Gulch.
