    SUMMARY PRESENTED BYT-Mobile

San Marcos, California provides access to a mix of coastal and inland camping destinations within a 30-mile radius. Dixon Lake Campground in Escondido offers tent, RV, and cabin options just 10 miles northeast of San Marcos, while coastal sites like South Carlsbad State Beach and San Elijo State Beach Campgrounds provide oceanfront camping experiences about 15 miles west. The region includes a combination of state parks, county facilities, and private RV resorts with varying levels of development and amenities, from primitive sites to full-hookup locations.

Reservations are essential for most developed campgrounds in the area, particularly during summer months and holiday weekends when coastal sites fill months in advance. Inland campgrounds experience extreme heat during summer, with temperatures regularly exceeding 90°F, while coastal locations maintain moderate temperatures year-round but may experience morning fog and evening winds. Most established campgrounds provide water, restrooms, and fire rings, though fire restrictions are common during dry seasons. Parking and campsite size can be limited at popular locations, especially for larger RVs. As one camper noted, "California beach camping can be very hard to come by. Unlike some other campgrounds in Southern California this one gives you ample room to move around and set up camp."

The proximity to both beaches and mountains creates diverse camping experiences within a relatively small geographic area. San Marcos campers can choose between popular coastal campgrounds with excellent beach access or inland sites like Dos Picos County Park and Guajome Regional Park that are praised for shade coverage and hiking opportunities. Several visitors mentioned the convenience of being close to urban amenities while still enjoying natural surroundings. "This site is great if you like hiking, biking, MTB, and running. It is very clean, and the showers are free and clean as well," shared one review of O'Neill Regional Park. Noise levels vary significantly, with beachfront locations experiencing more crowds and activity, while canyon and mountain sites tend to be quieter despite occasional road noise.

Idyllwild Campground — Mount San Jacinto State Park

      Showers not working

This site is close to the retreat camp, so loud basketball games start early in the morning. Additionally, most showers are out of order, and the working ones require specific tokens

      Sun Outdoors San Diego Bay

It's good for what it is

It's a really nice facility, which is good because there isn't much around it. Sites are large with good spacing, the place has everything; pool and spa, arcade, restaurant, bar, private showers (some have a toilet), playground , dog parks, and a great laundry facility. On site store has a lot of things you need, including some basic RV stuff. No rig, they have bungalows for rent as well. Staff is really nice, fire pits work on lpg 20 pound tank only which we rented full for 26 bucks since we couldn't connect it to our rig, you can use your own though. Downside is your pretty much driving anywhere for anything but the living coast is definitely worth the trip which is behind the park. Side note, this was definitely one of the buggier places I have been to, mosquitoes, flies, spiders, roaches, you name it, you'll see it.

      Silver Strand State Beach Campground

      100 series is amazing

Was able to score a 100 series spot which you back right up to the sand. Sites are tight but it felt huge in our 24½ foot rig. Power (standard, 30, 50) and water at site, one dump station that is 10 bucks at the south end or a truck comes around in the morning for 20. It's basically a giant parking lot with rigs stacked in, I would only want 100-200 sites. Bathrooms are fine on the south side, never found inside showers, just the outside beach style. Mix of folks but everyone was pleasant, enforcement of rules seems lax. Beautiful spot, short bike or Uber into IB or Coronado. Beach was mellow, uncrowded for how packed the campground was, clean and beautiful.

      Sweetwater Summit Regional Park

      Well Kept

Sweetwater is very nice. Only complaint is the airplane noise from being in a flight path and the highway noise from the bordering highway.

We stayed in the South Loop which is older, so has more developed trees.

The pull through spots are piggybacked, which does make privacy a bit harder.

Staff and rangers are very nice, helpful, and personable.

Lake Cuyamaca Recreation and Park District

Lone Pine: Great for Gatherings Not hot for silence

Pretty lake views, good plots with easy access to restrooms. However, if you want to enjoy peace and quiet this place isn't for you. The 3 closest had large groups gathering so don't expect the limit of 6 to be honored. Ditto goes for quiet hours. Gave it a 3 b because I was using a truck tent (couldn't actually connect to my spot) and hoped for p&c. But the folks around me were having a great time.

Tucalota Springs RV Resort & Campground

      Mature shade, quiet and FRIENDLY

This RV park is quite lovely! I called to make my reservation with Dawn, because the campground map didn’t show facility locations for the washroom, pool, office/store or shade. My site (B-17) had electric and water only with a huge oak tree providing lots of shade. The gravel RV spots are nearly level, picnic tables and fire pits. This is a well maintained park with a laundry, small “zoo”, fishing pond and a sparkling swimming pool. I highly recommend this RV park, and I will plan to stay here again.

Culp Valley Primitive Campground — Anza-Borrego Desert State Park

      Nice and quiet

Lovely little place just off the road but not bothered by it. Clean pit toilets and the sites were far enough away from each other that we didn’t notice the two other campers.

Reasonably level site, truck was able to self level no issues.

105f during the day but it was July and it is the desert so plan accordingly.

      Tool Box Springs Campground

      Will do this again

Sitting at 6kft about 40 minutes from the main road up a reasonably rough road. Although there was a guy in the first campsite in a mini.

This site was reached by going a little further than the first few campsites and then taking a leap of faith that the road to the right going down hill that wasn’t on the map lead somewhere.

It has amazing views, minimal amenities, and a washed out rough road. I wouldn’t attempt this site except in something with ground clearance and Awd. We had a Rivian.

Site is super peaceful, reasonably flat, you should expect firepit bans at this time of year, also the wind is fairly constant but not terrible. Over night temp is ~78f

There were a reasonable amount of flies nothing biting though, they were replaced by moths at dark.

The occasional plane was the most annoying thing. Other than that bliss.

The region sits at the intersection of coastal and inland microclimates, with elevations ranging from sea level to 2,000 feet in nearby foothills. Summer temperatures can reach triple digits at inland sites during July and August, while winter nights drop to the 40s even at coastal campgrounds.

    What to do

Fishing at Dixon Lake: Dixon Lake Campground offers year-round fishing opportunities with no California fishing license required. "Big fish in this lake. Warning: Beware the Poison Oak. If you're hitting the trails or fishing the bank, there's a lot of it," notes Dad & B R. The lake rents motor boats, paddle boats, and peddle boats.

Mountain biking trails: Guajome Regional Park features well-maintained trails for mountain biking enthusiasts. "This site is great if you like hiking, biking, MTB, and running. It is very clean, and the showers are free and clean as well," according to one visitor. A bike trail extends from the campground all the way to the beach, approximately 10 miles away.

Beach access from San Elijo: San Elijo State Beach Campground provides direct beach access and excellent surfing spots. "It's classic California beach camping. Spots are fairly close together, and it's more like a parking lot than a campground. That said, the beach is great, and the river mouth is great for surfing," explains Jonathan G.

Hiking at Dos Picos: Dos Picos County Park offers several hiking trails through oak woodlands. "The campground itself is nestled within a beautiful park, offering a tranquil and scenic backdrop," shares Colleen D. The park also has a small fishing pond where families can try their luck.

    What campers like

Clean facilities: Dixon Lake Campground maintains exceptionally clean bathrooms and showers. "Super clean showers that are FREE! Leave your quarters at home! The water pressure is fantastic and it takes no time for the water to get HOT," notes Chanel C.

Privacy between sites: Woods Valley Kampground offers spacious sites with good separation. "Plenty of space between campgrounds. No issues with hook-ups or amenities," reports David T. The campground's forested setting creates natural barriers between sites.

Beach views: South Carlsbad State Beach Campground provides oceanfront camping with unbeatable views. "Beautiful ocean views! Next to Coast Hwy which is busy but not totally annoying. Stores down the road for any necessities. Beach is accessible by stairs--nothing at beach level," explains cynthia S.

Family-friendly amenities: Paradise By The Sea RV Resort includes numerous recreational options. "They had an indoor rec room with billiards, shuffle board and more. Outdoor rec area with corn hole, picnic area and more. Pool and hot tub well maintained," shares David T.

    What you should know

Train noise at beach locations: Several coastal campgrounds sit near train tracks. "Campground is situated next to the highway and train tracks. No shade. Friendly beach crowd," notes Tim J. about San Elijo. Most reviewers mention the noise is manageable with proper expectations.

Reservation timing: Campsites at popular locations fill quickly, especially during summer. "The worst part is trying to get a spot secured," mentions Jonathan G. about San Elijo State Beach Campground. Many campgrounds open reservations 3-6 months in advance.

Fire restrictions: Fire policies vary significantly between campgrounds. Dixon Lake prohibits open fires, while others allow them in designated rings. "I've camped here only once in the last few years because not being able to have a camp fire really takes away from camping to me," shares Kristian B. about Dixon Lake.

Wildlife awareness: Inland campgrounds require vigilance regarding wildlife. "Critters heard roaming around campsite at night (either a raccoon or coyote came within 5 feet of our tent while we were sleeping)," warns Justin T. about Dixon Lake. Some campgrounds also have seasonal yellow jacket issues during summer.

    Tips for camping with families

Choose campgrounds with playgrounds: Guajome Regional Park features a large modern playground adjacent to camping areas. "There is a playground for the kids. There is a fire pit at every house," notes Jacob S. This provides built-in entertainment for younger campers.

Consider cabin options: Dixon Lake Campground offers cabin rentals for families wanting more comfort. "They have spots for tents and lodges. I can't wait to go back actually," shares luisa J. Cabins provide shelter during unpredictable weather and can make family trips more manageable.

Look for fishing ponds: Dos Picos County Park has a small fishing pond perfect for introducing children to fishing. "My kids caught their first fish in the little pond," shares Dave L. These controlled fishing environments are ideal for beginners.

Select shaded sites: Summer temperatures can be extreme at inland locations. "They have done a great job making it feel like you were out in nature. Great walking around the trails and lake," notes Heather L. about Woods Valley Kampground's shaded environment.

    Tips from RVers

Full hookup availability: Most campgrounds near San Marcos offer full hookup sites, but amenities vary. "Full hook ups are available for RV's but you need a surge protector and a water filter is advised if you want to drink the water," advises Nicole H. about Del Mar Beach Cottages.

Site size considerations: Paradise By The Sea RV Resort has limited space between sites. "The spots are teeny tiny driveways with no room between them at all," warns Corinna B. Request specific sites when making reservations if your RV is larger.

Dump station access: Many campgrounds have dump stations, but procedures vary. "You have to drive to the RV dump to dump. It's close but you don't have the convenience to dump at your site," explains Linda R. about Dos Picos County Park.

Reserve well ahead: RV spots at popular coastal campgrounds book months in advance. "Active duty can book 12 weeks out and others 10 weeks," notes John S. regarding Del Mar Beach Cottages. Off-season camping offers more availability and lower rates.
