Best Dog-Friendly Camping near Cordes Junction, AZ

Bloody Basin Road offers multiple free dispersed camping areas that welcome pets in the Agua Fria National Monument near Cordes Junction. The dirt access road is generally well-maintained and passable for most vehicles including camper vans and RVs, with numerous pull-off sites spaced hundreds of yards apart providing privacy. No amenities are available—no water, toilets, or trash service—so campers must pack in and out all supplies including pet waste. Sites feature expansive views of rolling hills and excellent stargazing opportunities. Some areas have inconsistent cellular service depending on location, with sites in valleys having weaker signals than those on higher ground.

Dog owners should note the presence of wildlife in the area, including skunks that have been encountered during daylight hours. The terrain offers good hiking and biking opportunities for active pets, though the area does experience ATV and dirt bike traffic which can create dust and noise. Temperature variations can be significant, making this location cooler than Phoenix while still requiring shade consideration for pets during warmer months. Most campsites are open with little natural shade, which benefits solar setups but requires pet owners to create shade for their animals. The 50s Diner Backseat Bar & Motel RV Park provides a developed alternative with full hookups, showers, and pet-friendly accommodations for those seeking amenities after boondocking.

    Tonto National Forest Riverside Campground

    Cool spot, too much trash

The river was beautiful! The camp spots were close to the river with nice big fire rings. Just like a lot of low desert camping in Arizona it’s dusty and dry with lots of prickly plans. But the trail and the trees near the river were lush. My biggest complaint about the spot was all the garbage everywhere. Come on people, burn your trash or take it home! There’s no need to trip over piles of water bottles & beer cans, cigarette butts, McDonald’s wrappers and plastic bags.

    Thousand Trails Verde Valley

    Our favorite Thousand Trails campground!

This place is huge! Nestled in the red rock country of Arizona, this Thousand Trails campground offers a scenic and tranquil escape. The sites are well-spaced, and the amenities include a pool, hot tub, 2 dog parks, hiking trails, river access and clubhouse. Its proximity to Sedona, Jerome and local wineries makes it an excellent choice for those seeking relaxation and exploration.

    Zane Grey RV Village

BEAUTIFUL campground! Plan at for at least a couple of nights!

This was just a stop along our route, and we were so bummed we only stayed here one night! Shady, lots of trees, pristine condition of all facilities including dog park, walking trail next to the creek, and large enough sites for our 42' rig. There was live music on night! Furthermore, they were generous and understanding of an emergency situation that happened on the day we needed to leave. The owner even brought my kids popsicles while we packed up! Ask him what he used to do for a living... he'll have a fun telling you about it. Beautiful campground I couldn't recommend more.

Verde River RV Resort & Cottages

    Wonderful experience

We went over Thanksgiving and had a splendid time. The staff is super nice and awesome. There was so much to do from mini golf, painting classes, live music, dinners, karaoke, and free breakfast 3 days a week, hot tub and heated piol. There are lots of trees and it’s a great park to walk around. At the back you have the River you can walk around and you are surrounded with mountain views. Very dog friendly and they even have a dog park, and “office” dog. I would rebook here again we had such a lovely experience.

    Lo Lo Mai Springs Resort

Nice oasis in the summer heat

We stayed here in June which is a hot time to camp in Arizona. This campground has Oak Creek running through it which is a great place to cool off. We stayed here while we visited Sedona which is not too far away. Mature trees provide shade at most sites. The mosquitoes were pretty bad which sometimes just a part of camping near water. Clean restrooms and showers.

    Verde Ranch RV Resort

Take a break and relax at this resort!

GREAT RV park for big rigs. Very nice pool, great dog park with dog pee pads of turf all over the park (my dogs appreciated that over peeing on the gravel! Ha). We weren't super thrilled we paid so much for a back-in site to the Verde River when the river wasn't very full or the site very close to it. They nickle-and-dime you, even for an optional picnic table! But the pool and club house were beautiful, so it felt like a really nice break from the typical campgrounds. Truly a resort.

    Distant Drums RV Resort

Upscale & Remote with Desert Scenery

Worth it to stay here even if you are planning to spend a lot of time in Sedona. The drive getting there is beautiful. It’s intentionally remote but off the highway near a large Casino and a Sonic. Lovely hiking trail across from the main entrance. Very smooth pavement, exceptionally landscaped with expensive plants like olive trees, very clean, paved sites, and great amenities. The hot tub, showers, gym, laundry and dog park were clean and well planned. There are desert views in all directions, but I particularly loved my large pull-through site 110. It’s on an interior corner and has the sweetest olive tree and great subset views. What most impressed me was the staff who escort you to your site and do a great job cleaning the sites between guests. The pavement was freshly blown and the gravel was raked in perfect rows upon arrival.

Guide to Cordes Junction

Bloody Basin Road dispersed camping areas provide multiple free sites approximately 15 miles southeast of Cordes Junction in the Agua Fria National Monument. The area sits at elevations between 3,000-4,000 feet, creating a transitional zone between desert and grassland ecosystems. Several turnoffs and side roads branch from the main access road, with camping spots typically spaced 100-300 yards apart depending on terrain features.

What to do

Hiking from camp: Several campers have reported good hiking directly from dispersed sites. "The area was fairly busy when I was there so had to drive in a couple miles more than I wanted. Sites are nicely spaced though so it's not like some areas where everyone is in a big lot," notes Greg C. at Bloody Basin Rd / Agua Fria NM Dispersed Camping.

Lake activities: Watson Lake near Prescott offers kayaking and fishing approximately 45 minutes from Cordes Junction. "Watson lake is a 10 min hike. I would stay here again," reports Numan Y. from Point of Rocks RV Campground.

Stargazing: The minimal light pollution makes this area excellent for night sky viewing. "The stars are bright and this is worth the drive. Other sites can be seen, however, the distance apart is great enough that you cannot hear them," writes Sadie P. about camping in the area.

What campers like

Temperature differences: Camping at higher elevations provides relief from Phoenix heat. "So many sites and gorgeous sunsets. Near enough to Phoenix without the intense heat," mentions Ethan B. about Bloody Basin Rd / Agua Fria NM Dispersed Camping.

Cell service: Many sites offer workable connectivity. "I had great couple nights here. I pulled off the road short of the Dyrt directions and found a cute little place with a fire ring. Great ATT and Verizon service," reports Kelda C. about Flower Pot USFS Dispersed.

Diverse camping options: The region offers both developed and primitive camping. "Spent 3 nights had an amazing time with easy access to town. Water, bathrooms, fire pit, tables, great views and trees," writes Kitten G. about White Spar Campground near Prescott.

What you should know

Road conditions: Access roads vary significantly throughout the year. "Dirt road is a bit washboard but very manageable by any vehicle. Spots line the road to the left & right as you travel down the road," notes Jeremy W.

Wind exposure: Open camping areas can experience significant wind. "It is very open space so wind will attack you really rough. Even roof top tent felt the impact," warns kailey about Bloody Basin Road Camp.

Litter issues: Some sites have trash problems. "The biggest bummer was the amount of trash and empty beer cans strewn around the site. Real bummer," reports RGR D.

Wildlife awareness: Beyond skunks, campers should be aware of other wildlife. "Keep in mind there are known bears in the area, and the camp host did warn us about a mountain lion as well," cautions Ethan B. about Lynx Campground.

Tips for camping with families

Site spacing: For families wanting privacy, seek sites farther from main roads. "Sites are spread out enough that there is plenty of privacy between the spots. Running water from a pump and the out house style toilets were clean," shares Sam B. about Lynx Campground.

Timing considerations: Family visits work best in spring and fall for moderate temperatures. "We stayed here in mid December and there were only a handful of others," mentions Jeremy W. about winter camping.

Road access with children: Some roads require planning with kids. "The drive is easy but becomes unmaintained a couple of miles down the road," notes Sadie P., which may impact family travel plans.

Tips from RVers

Site selection for RVs: Look for pull-off areas with adequate space and reasonable leveling. "The Bloody Bath access road was an easy drive (F250 SD with a truck camper). Washboards were easy to navigate but watch your speed on the downhill turns," advises RGR D.

Hookup options: For RVers needing facilities after boondocking, nearby developed campgrounds provide alternatives. "This park is absolutely beautiful! It's so clean and the staff is so nice and friendly. The pool and hot tubs were very clean and well maintained," reports Shannon L. about Verde Ranch RV Resort.

Road navigation: Many dispersed camping access roads are navigable for most RVs and trailers but require care. "Road is in pretty decent shape for my camper van. The area was fairly busy when I was there so had to drive in a couple miles more than I wanted," explains Greg C.

Campsite spacing: Many dog friendly campgrounds near Cordes Junction offer good separation between sites. "Each spot is clean and private. There are trees between the spots," notes Numan Y. about Point of Rocks RV Campground.
