Sundance Road cuts off Senator Highway into forested terrain in Prescott National Forest, offering free dispersed camping across a handful of numbered sites spread along a dirt road that gets noticeably bumpy once pavement ends. The sites vary considerably in size and character. Site 6 has room for large groups with multiple tents or small campers, while site 5 sits tucked between two hills with limited maneuvering space, requiring trailers to pull forward to site 6 and back in. A dry creek runs along one side of site 5, which makes that location a poor choice during or after rain.
Shade coverage is heavy throughout. Campers report cell service at the site, which is not always a given at free dispersed spots in the region. Some sites sit close enough to the road above to pick up passing traffic noise, though it tends to be manageable during the week. Weekend use brings a different dynamic: ATV traffic increases noticeably, and Gregg R. noted that monsoon-season weekdays are the sweet spot for quieter stays. Insects can be a nuisance after dark in summer.
Trash left by previous campers has come up in multiple reviews. No water or restrooms are available on site. Nearby Senator Hwy Dispersed Camp Site occupies similar terrain just to the south, and the boundaries between the two areas can be hard to distinguish on arrival. Bring water, a trash bag, and plan arrivals for a weekday if possible, particularly during monsoon season in July and August.
Description
This spot is located in the Prescott Basin. The Prescott Basin is an area immediately south and west of Prescott, Arizona and encompasses approximately 59,000 acres (about 4% of the Prescott National Forest). Dispersed camping is camping outside of developed campgrounds. In contrast to camping in developed campsites, dispersed camping is more primitive, and generally has no amenities such as trash collection, water or toilets.
