Hikers with an interest in canyon overlooks and wildlife watching will find FS 609 a functional base in the ponderosa pines above Strawberry, Arizona. The road runs directly off the highway, making the turnoff easy to reach but easy to miss since there is no signage. From there, the dispersed sites spread out along a network of rough dirt roads inside Coconino National Forest, with fire rings at most spots and enough space between sites that neighboring campers rarely feel close. Cattle share the area around a water hole near the entrance, and elk are commonly reported along the highway after dark.
Road conditions are the single most important factor for planning a trip here. The first few sites within a few hundred yards of the highway are accessible to most high-clearance vehicles, including large trucks and some RVs. Farther in, the road becomes rutted and uneven enough that long wheelbases risk high-centering on the dips. The most recommended destination is the half-loop reached by taking the first left turn past a horse corral, where sites overlook a canyon rim. "True dispersed camping, very quiet," notes Tammy G., who made it to the cliff-side spots in a high-clearance 2WD.
No reservations are needed and there is no fee. Cell coverage is reported as variable, with at least one visitor getting full 5G bars on T-Mobile while others found service spotty. Campfires are allowed subject to Coconino National Forest fire restrictions, which can change seasonally. The Mogollon Rim Dispersed -- Coconino NF near Strawberry and Coconino NF Dispersed off FR 9387P near Mogollon Rim offer comparable free dispersed options if this area is full.
The Clear Creek trailhead is roughly 30 minutes away by car, and the towns of Pine and Strawberry are about 15 minutes out for resupply. Google Maps navigates to the site reliably; Apple Maps does not. The area tends to stay quieter than its proximity to Phoenix might suggest, partly because there is no roadside signage drawing in casual passersby. This site works best for campers in high-clearance trucks or SUVs who are comfortable with unmarked dispersed camping and want canyon access without a campground fee.
