Best Campgrounds near Forest Junction, WI

The eastern Wisconsin landscape surrounding Forest Junction features a mix of state parks, county campgrounds, and private facilities within a 30-mile radius. High Cliff State Park, located 15 miles northeast in Sherwood, stands as one of the region's premier destinations with limestone cliff formations overlooking Lake Winnebago. Calumet County Park near Hilbert provides boat-in access and lakeside camping, while Devils River Campground in Maribel offers a quieter experience with access to nearby cave systems. The Kettle Moraine State Forest's Northern Unit, though slightly farther at 45 miles south, provides extensive camping options amid glacial terrain. Most campgrounds accommodate both tent and RV camping, with varying levels of hookups and amenities.

Wisconsin state park camping requires both campsite fees and vehicle admission stickers, with non-residents paying higher rates than Wisconsin residents. Reservations become essential during summer weekends and fall color season, particularly for electric sites. As one camper noted about High Cliff State Park, "Our site backed up to a trail along the cliff which was awesome for a family that loves to hike. Most of the sites were spacious." Spring camping can bring challenges with standing water and mud, especially in low-lying areas. Mosquitoes become prevalent in summer months, particularly in wooded sites near water. Cell service varies significantly across the region, with better coverage near larger towns like Appleton and Oshkosh.

Waterfront sites at Lake Winnebago and other area lakes consistently receive the highest ratings from campers but fill quickly during peak season. The Ice Age Trail passes through several nearby camping areas, providing hiking opportunities directly from campsites. Many campgrounds feature clean shower facilities, though quality varies by location. A visitor to Kettle Moraine noted, "The Lake to Lake bike trail connects Long Lake Campground and Mauthe Lake Campground, about an 8-mile trip one way through different landscapes." Wildlife encounters commonly include raccoons, deer, and various bird species. Fall camping offers spectacular foliage viewing, while winter camping is limited to a few year-round facilities. Several campgrounds host seasonal events, with High Cliff's Halloween weekend being particularly popular among families.

    Brown County Reforestation Campground

    Road to Mackinac

Only spent 1 night but this is a beautiful campground. LOTS of birds (that's our thing!), forested, so many trails for hiking and mountain biking. Bathrooms and showers were clean, site was spacious. Hookups are available but we chose dry camping.

Fon du Lac County Waupun Park

    Oak/hickory forest

The campground is in a beautiful oak/hickory forest with many birds, chipmunks and skeeters(pack protection). We stayed on site 22 which was a nine minute walk from the toilet and had a street light. There are water spigots throughout. Site 21 or 23 would be better. The sites are large and the ones on the outside of the loop are very private. The campground was quiet, especially after dark! There is a train horn occasionally, but it’s distant. The showers were hot and clean. The playground was fun. There is a pickle ball court, so bring paddles. There is also a walking trail.

Fon du Lac County Waupun Park

    Peaceful wooded camping

Quiet level throughout. Spots for a couple tents and a camper at each site. Disc golf and a small fishing area. Golf course right next-door so close you could walk to. Most of the sites were in a wooded area, which gives you some privacy. Only downfall for us was distance to the restroom as there’s only one so if you’re in the back of the campground, you gotta walk all the way upfront.

    Waupun Park Campground

Waupun County Park WI - Campground

Family friendly campground, playgrounds, pickle ball court, showers, clean bathrooms, fire rings, shared water spigots & power at camp site. There is an outdoor pavilion for groups, firewood for sale at host. Lamp posts light camp road but not overwhelming. Nice shaded sites with mature white oak trees. Enjoyed and recommend if looking for full service campsite.

    Big Lake Campground

Great Family and Dog friendly RV resort

Clean bathrooms. Not overly fancy, but lots of sites and the two families that run this resort are super nice and accommodating. We felt welcomed like family and had multiple interactions with them. Within a minute of Lake Michigan.

    Scheffel's Hideaway Campground

    Rude Owner

My wife and I were looking for a nice campground in this area so we could visit family and my cousin mentioned Scheffel's. I did not read all of the reviews but instead balanced out bad reviews with good ones. Unfortunately, the bad were not exagerrating. Reservation process was ok though not automated. Reserved in January and female owner stated they dont man the phones much while closed. Ok, she seemed nice. Little reaponse from them on followup emails. We checked in on a Thursday. Husband owner guided us to our site and advised us to be aware of crown. Husband was very pleasant. No issues there. Friday morning my wife and I, both seniors, were walking our dogs. We were walking across the playground, dogs had not done anything yet, when the female owner came charging out of her office screaming at us that we cannot walk the dogs there. She stated there were signs. The one sign on the side we entered was fully obscured by a short tree. We started moving in the direction she pointed and my wife said we always pick up after our dogs. She yelled again. She must have stated 3 times she was the owner. I quietly muttered"wow" as I was amazed at her rudeness. She turned and yelled again and I explained we were moving as directed. She started heading back to the office when my wife stated"God Bless You". She was not being sarcastic. We take our faith seriously. The lady turned around and told us to pack up and leave. No reconciling, no working it out. If we were not out by noon she was calling the police. She refused to give us a refund for the 8 days remaining. She has not returned phone messages or emails. We were 800 miles from home and at the beginning of our family visit, I was born in the area. We were very fortunate to find a suitable campground. I have never in my life ever been treated as rudely by someone in the"hospitality" industry. Sorry for the long review. Dont discount the negative on this one.
