Camping opportunities near Yelm, Washington span diverse terrain around Joint Base Lewis-McChord and the Nisqually River watershed. Sites typically sit at 300-500 feet elevation with mild temperatures ranging from 35°F in winter to 78°F in summer. Summer drought conditions often trigger campfire restrictions from July through September at most campgrounds.
What to do
Lakeside recreation: Alder Lake Park offers excellent water activities with a designated swimming area and boat access. "The water is that beautiful blue/green glacier water color. The campground we stayed at did not have designated fire rings, but did have a metal BBQ that we used for the kids to make s'mores on," notes Nicole P.
Hiking trails: Millersylvania State Park Campground features old-growth forest trails extending around Deep Lake. "There are ample trails throughout the park including a lovely trail along the lake, which is not far from the campground," according to Christina F., who visited during the winter season.
Wildlife viewing: Forested campgrounds around Yelm provide habitat for local wildlife including deer, raccoons, and various bird species. "My kids enjoyed playing in the sand and watching deer from our campsite," shares Ashley Y. about her family's experience at Alder Lake.
What campers like
Privacy between sites: Dash Point State Park Campground earns high marks for site separation. "This campground is remarkable in the privacy between each of the camping spots, the bird life, the wild and deep forest vibes, and the walking trails," writes Brittany D.
Waterfront access: The riverfront camping at Riverbend Campground allows direct water access. "We stayed there on a Thursday right on the river. Super peaceful, great fire pit location, water at the site entrance, portable restrooms away (but close), and best of all right at the river's edge," shares J.
Clean facilities: Campers consistently mention well-maintained bathrooms and shower facilities. "Elkamp was very clean with the nicest campground bathrooms we have ever experienced. The shower is coin-operated so bring quarters if you wish to use," notes Shannon H. about Elkamp Eastcreek.
What you should know
Reservation requirements: Most campgrounds fill quickly, especially during summer months. "We had a great time. Restrooms were clean, the sites were clean when we got there. Over all we had a great time," says Kait P. about her stay at Penrose Point State Park Campground.
Seasonal water levels: Lake levels can fluctuate significantly, affecting beach access. "The biggest downfall is that this year was the dam in Tacoma was partially drained causing a 'low tide' which exposed the dirt and poor beach area... usually when water is at normal level the beach is all sand and water is clean and clear," explains Natashinka C. about Alder Lake.
Noise considerations: Some campgrounds experience occasional noise from nearby facilities. "We enjoyed our stay at Millersylvania. It's a beautiful place. The only downside for us is that it is really crowded, and a few dogs and some very rude people kept us up until about 1 am," reports Carrie S.
Tips for camping with families
Playground access: American Heritage Campground offers designated play areas for children. "They have ice and wood available for purchase as well as a small general store. At the main lodge, there is also laundry available. One great aspect of this campground is it has a fenced in pool," notes Mary C.
Safe swimming areas: Several campgrounds feature protected swim zones with gradual entry points. "The beach is the main attraction and it is hopping. We went early in the morning and staked a claim and were happy all day. There is a nice shallow area and two large swimming areas as well as a fishing dock," shares Ellen T. about Millersylvania State Park.
Kid-friendly activities: Many campgrounds offer junior ranger programs or guided nature walks. "This was a beautiful pet friendly camp site showers water to play in animal friendly all around beautiful and amazing," writes Anna E. about her experience at Camp Murray Beach.
Tips for RVers
Site access considerations: Ike Kinswa State Park Campground offers full hookup sites but requires navigation through forested areas. "The campground is heavily wooded which is really nice for shade, though it can make it tricky to get into a spot if you have slide outs," explains Christina F.
Hookup availability: Several pet-friendly campgrounds near Yelm offer full hookups, but reservation timing matters. "The sites are far enough apart that they feel relatively private, and most appear completely level. Trees abound. Dogs are welcome!" shares William B. about Elkamp Eastcreek.
Dump station locations: Not all campgrounds with hookups have dump stations on-site. "What would improve Elkamp? It would be great to have a dump station. Sewer hookups would be even better. But that's a small inconvenience in exchange for staying at a gorgeous campground just a short drive from the Seattle metro area," notes William B.
