    Ike Kinswa State Park Campground

    Camping amongst the tall trees

This campground is on Mayfield Lake where the Cowlitz River flows into the lake. We were in loop D, which was the only open loop along with the cabins (cabins are loop C and attached to loop D). This is a partial hook-up loop. Full hook-ups are in loop A. The campground is heavily wooded which is really nice for shade, though it can make it tricky to get into a spot if you have slide outs. As we were on the outer part of the loop in a pull-through site, we had a view of the woods and quite a bit of space between neighboring sites. We could not see either of the neighboring sites while sitting by our campfire. There was a trail to the trash compactor next to our site, but it did not seem to be heavily used. The trash compactor is probably a good 1/4 mile down this trail by the dump station. It was very quiet at night, which was fantastic! Very good Verizon cell service. The day use area is out of the campground and across the main road. There is a playground and beach area. It would have been nice if there was a playground on the campground side of the park.

    Toutle River RV Resort

    I5 access

We stayed 3 nights at Toutle River RV Resort now owned by RV Inn Style chain. Quiet and respectful campers with paroling friendly staff. I5 access is perfect, although road and train noise could be bothersome for some campers as the campground is nestled in between. The camp store and pool were open. The playground, disk golf and basketball hoops accessible but the pickle ball courts had been removed since we last visited. Sites range from open to treed with many of the pick nick tables needing refurbished. Full hookups with gravel pads for 70+$$ per night. WiFi isn’t free, must be purchased. We had spotty cell service with Verizon though we were directly off I5 corridor. The public restrooms were clean, but mostly under construction while we were camping. Many full timers w/park models and trailer/RV’s sprinkled throughout the park. All-in-all we will stay here again in the future and happy to do so.

Cougar Rock Campground — Mount Rainier National Park

    Nice place

Nice campground on the SW corner of Mt Rainier NP. We were here in the off season, meaning that reservations are not taken and everything is FCFS. You stop at the ranger office at the campground entrance and you’re given a campsite. $20/night. Zero cell service in this whole area (but there was good cell reception and wifi at Paradise, and free wifi at the museum 2 miles down at Longmire).

There are water spigots at this campground, flush toilets, no showers, trash dumpsters, and glass, plastic, and aluminum recycling. Each site has a picnic table, bear box, and fire pit. The dump station has been non operational for several years and the ranger said she doesn’t think it’ll ever be fixed.

The length limit here is 35 ft for a motorhome, and us at 28 ft head to toe felt very big here. The Wonderland Trail hike can be accessed from this campground, just across the road. Lots of trees in this campground, and we struggled to keep our batteries charged via solar, though there looked to be enough open sky for starlink (we don’t have starlink so I can’t say). All the loops here in this campground are pretty similar in layout and landscape.

    Lake Sylvia State Park Campground

    Hidden Gem

Set in a former logging camp above the town of Montesano, park life revolves around a large swimming and fishing lake. This site is super family friendly and pet friendly too.

There is a playground on site and TONS of old logging roses turned bike trails.

There are plenty of tent and RV sites and s few primitive sites for campers. There are showers a flushing toilets.

    Riverbend Campground

    Nice campground with friendly staff

Interesting the other review was for a first time out with their travel trailer!  Same for us!

We got site 106 which was the furthest one out, it was right along the river.  The site has a concrete slab and fit our Jayco 174BH perfectly.

This site does is a back in, but the slab is at a 90 degree angle from the drive.  So you will have to back your trailer around a corner if you plan to park it on the slab.  Didn't see other sites like this.

The campground did have a very small selection of items to buy, but mainly snacks.  They do fill propane tanks, but only during week days.

The site had water and electrical, but no sewer connections.  they do have a nice dump station.

The camp ground itself did have at least 2 pet areas neither are fenced so a leash is required, along with a playground for the kids.

We have Verizon and had no issues with cell signal at this campground.

Also, this is a private campground, so they have a guy that stands at the gate to open it when guests come arrive.

    Kemp Olson Memorial Park

    Good for a quick overnight

Quaint and quiet town. Small quiet park with electric and water and a dump station. Site two is a pull through that is not set up right to have your awning on the correct side (see photo). Other pull through was too small for our 33’ tt. Sites adequately spaced for some privacy. Nice playground for kids and horseshoe courts. Dog friendly. Nice drive over white pass from Yakima.

    Elkamp Eastcreek

    Best place in Washington state

This is the cleanest, most cared for camping site I have ever been to. The owners Tom and Brian, make your stay very enjoyable. They care about you having a great experience, whether you’re a first time camper or a seasoned camper. They have a great store with snacks, wine, beer, and local sourced goods. They have games you can use while you are there, like corn hole and board and card games, free of charge. Sites are large for travel trailers and motor homes, they also have tent and group sites. Trailer and motor home sites have power and water, there is a dump station you can use on your way home free of charge. The bathrooms are large and very clean, the shower is 4 quarters for 6 minutes, those of us who try to take a 3 minute shower in our rigs so we don’t run through all the hot water so our partner can have a shower without waiting for the water to get hot again it’s a blessing. In the evening Tom or Brian drive through the park seeing if anyone needs ice or firewood, if there’s not a burn ban, bring a propane fire pit for your camping experience. They also sell propane so no fears on running out. The best thing is you are under a large canopy of trees which helps to keep you cool even on the hottest days. There is a small creek to put your chair in and put your feet in the water. Our first year there we brought 4 other people, this year it was 28. We make Elkcamp our yearly get together. Family friendly and a great place to unwind. You’re only a few miles from mineral lake, bring your trunks, inner tube, or your paddle boards. I’d give it a solid 10 out of 10.

    Kemp Olson Memorial Park

Nice, small and largely undiscovered CG

We are full-timers in a 36 ft Class A with a Cherokee Trailhawk tow, were meeting friends in the area and visiting Mt. Rainier. The CG has seen some recent improvements, including graveling of the 12 campsite pads. Some of the sites have picnic tables, none of them have fire pits, and only one, site 12, has a grill. We were in site 2 for 4 days in early September. Ours was one of 2 pull-throughs, but ours was on the inside of the loop, which put the utilities on the correct side, but the awing side was close to the road and a large tree, so we had to setup chairs and such on the utility side. Most of the sites are pretty well spaced. There were only a handful of campers here when we arrived on the Friday before the Labor Day weekend and come Saturday, there were only two left besides us. Unfortunately, one of the two remaining was a long-timer, maybe the grounds keeper(?), who often let his little dog run loose in the CG, and though friendly enough, it barked at those who passed near it. The park has a playground and a coin operated water fountain for the kids. There is an elementary school next door, so it can get a little raucous when the kids are outside. There were quite a few low hanging branches throughout the CG, but most were fairly small. I did mention this to the Toledo City Hall, who said they would put it on the list. Although there is a faded“Free WiFi Zone” as you enter the park, we were not able to detect one. AT&T coverage good, ranging from 3-4 Bars of LTE with speeds up to 15 MB/s. We were able to get DISH coverage on some of

    Kanaskat-Palmer State Park

Nice & quick camping option from Seattle

We stayed 1 night here for the maiden voyage of our recently purchased travel trailer, which was nice since it's only about an hour away from our place near Seattle. Arrived Friday early evening and it wasn't busy at all.

The check-in process was easy, even though their reservation system was down at the time. Filled up w/ some fresh water at the dump station, which was clean and well maintained.

Campsites in the RV loop were spaced out enough with vegetation between them so as to provide some privacy. Our site had a pull-through driveway, 30amp hookup, a fire ring and picnic table. Bathrooms in that loop were pretty nice... heated and very clean.

Took a walk down to the day use area by the river, which was easy for us, but some portions of the trails closer to the river were slightly overgrown w/ a few obstacles, which could be problematic for some. Didn't see any kids play structures down there, which would be nice to have for families.

We heard a couple trains while there, but the noise wasn't too loud. Never heard the fire siren that they warned us about. Overall, it was a good camping experience for a quick trip and would return!

Guide to Yelm

RV camping near Yelm, Washington typically requires navigating a mix of forested and open sites, with elevation changes affecting both access and weather conditions. Camping options range from spacious pull-through sites to more compact back-in spots, creating varying experiences depending on RV size and configuration. Most campgrounds in the region experience significant seasonal crowding during summer weekends, requiring advance planning.

What to do

Fishing at stocked ponds: Thousand Trails Paradise provides two stocked fishing ponds that keep families entertained. "My grandson loves coming here with us the two ponds they stock with fish," notes one visitor at Thousand Trails Paradise RV Campground, though they mentioned "some of the vegetation is overgrown and could use some trimming."

Swimming in multi-depth pools: Access varied swimming facilities with options for different ages and abilities. "This campgrounds has an awesome swimming area with three pools, one 8ft deep, on 6ft, and one wading pool. Also has a large spa," writes a camper about Thousand Trails Paradise.

Indoor recreation during rain: Many parks offer indoor alternatives when weather turns wet. At Thousand Trails Chehalis, visitors enjoy "billiards, two lodges, and two pools" with organized activities like "Bingo was being played in one of the lodges."

What campers like

Clean, well-maintained facilities: Campers consistently note facility upkeep as a priority. At Sun Outdoors Gig Harbor, a visitor writes, "Lovely RV park in Gig Harbor. Very clean. Friendly and helpful staff. I've stayed here numerous times over the past few years and this place is consistently amazing."

Organized activities for children: Parks with structured activities earn praise from families. One Thousand Trails Chehalis visitor reported: "Kids are helping review campgrounds we visited this summer. They loved that there was scavenger hunts for pigs in morning, tractor rides in afternoon, face painting, slushees, movie in lodge, crafts."

Natural separation between sites: Tree coverage creates privacy at select locations. A camper at Harmony Lakeside RV Park observed, "Campsite has lots of trees and shade (unless you are in lot across the road). Water is clean and the power is consistent."

What you should know

Water system issues: Several campgrounds experience water challenges. At Thousand Trails Paradise, visitors reported having to "boil water" due to system problems, while another noted "some sort of water issue and the restrooms had to be closed, forcing the use of very few port-a-potties."

Variable power quality: Electrical systems can be unreliable at certain locations. One visitor at Little Creek Casino Resort RV Park appreciated "Full hookups for the RVer. Sites to 70 ft. No firepits is a downside but the upside is the best seafood bar in the area."

Limited privacy at some parks: Site spacing varies significantly. "The spaces are very close together, but there are a lot of trees and it's very well kept," noted one Sun Outdoors Gig Harbor camper, who added, "I stayed for almost three weeks and it was quiet and relaxing, despite how close together the sites are."

Tips for camping with families

Fishing gear requirement: If planning to fish the stocked ponds, bring appropriate tackle. "Here is an update. There is a security issue at this park. We had a grill stolen. The park provides no security at all," warned a Thousand Trails Paradise camper, suggesting secure storage for equipment.

Pack for pool activities: Swimming facilities require appropriate gear. "Pool area there was a deteriorating ledge under one of the pool filter caps that I feel needs to be replaced," noted one visitor, emphasizing the need for water shoes and careful supervision.

Research site layout beforehand: Understanding the physical layout prevents disappointment. "We really enjoyed our time in this RV park it was easy to find and finding a camping spot was easy backing in was easy it was not hard to negotiate at all," shared a Thousand Trails Chehalis visitor.

Tips from RVers

Extend utility connections: Hookup placement varies by park and requires planning. "All sites are back in. All connections are in the back so imagine hooking up at a parking lot at the concrete stoppers. Sewer and electric, make sure you got enough tubes and extensions," advised a Washington Land Yacht Harbor visitor.

Size-appropriate site selection: Larger RVs need careful site selection. "Make sure you get a site that is large enough for both the RV and your vehicle as there is no extra parking. We picked a 50 ft site which allowed us to park the RV and still have room for our towed car," recommended a Little Creek Casino Resort RV Park camper.

Be prepared for leveling challenges: Many sites require significant leveling effort. At Majestic Mobile Manor & RV Park, a camper noted, "It took a long time to get set up because of the ridiculously small amount of space I had to maneuver my 33ft RV and my 8ft extended cab truck."
