Best Dog-Friendly Camping near Petersburg, VA

Americamps RV Resort's dog park stands out among Petersburg-area campgrounds with its dedicated pet amenities. The park welcomes pets with an on-site dog walker service and maintains a jar of dog treats at the office where two small dogs often greet arriving campers. Picture Lake Campground and South Forty RV Resort & Campground both offer full hookup sites where pets are permitted, with level paved spots that require minimal leveling. Most campgrounds in the area maintain standard leash requirements, though specific pet policies vary by location. The bathhouses at these facilities are generally well-maintained and clean, with Pocahontas State Park's facilities described as slightly dated but functional. Williamsburg KOA enforces breed restrictions, specifically prohibiting pit bulls, which is unusual as most area campgrounds have no breed-specific limitations.

Trails throughout Pocahontas State Park provide excellent dog walking opportunities with over 25 miles of paths through Virginia's largest state park. Dogs must remain leashed on these trails to protect local wildlife and other visitors. The Capital Bike Trail near Chickahominy Riverfront Park offers another excellent option for exercising dogs on leash. Summer temperatures in Petersburg can reach uncomfortable levels for pets, making early morning or evening walks advisable during hot months. Several campgrounds feature small but functional dog parks where pets can run off-leash within enclosed areas. Campers should be prepared with waste bags as availability of pet waste stations varies between facilities. Local veterinary services can be found within 15-20 minutes of most Petersburg-area campgrounds, with emergency services available in Richmond for after-hours care.

    Americamps RV Resort

    Most Dog-Friendly

Enjoyed my corner pull-through site F2 even though it was gravel with some muddy spots. There are some paved spots near the entrance (7-10 and 15-19 plus VIP 1 & 2). Fire pits and wood for $6 upon request. Nice office with two small dogs to greet you and a jar of dog treats. Was decked out for Halloween during my stay, and the flower beds, pond, playground, basketball court and dog park were among the nicest. There is even an on-site dog walker, so dog people will really appreciate staying here. I noticed one side of the park (around site 22) is very noisy during the work day as there is a big lumber yard there. The proximity to the Great Outdoors and a couple of cute pub houses was a nice surprise. Recycling dumpster on site.

    Williamsburg Campground

    Very nice campground

The cabin we stayed in was very nice. It had a very large back deck with a picnic table. We chose one without a bathroom, and the bathhouse was a very short walk. They have plenty of recreational activities for the kids. The staff was friendly and helpful. The playgrounds and pool were very clean, and the store had everything we needed. It is a very short drive off the highway and an easy commute to all of Williamsburg’s attractions. My only complaint is that my dogs typically travel everywhere with me, but I was not allowed to bring them on this trip because pit bulls are the ONLY breed they don’t allow on the campgrounds. However, if you have other breeds there is a very small dog park for them to run around and play. Other than that we really enjoyed our stay and will definitely stay at other KOAs when the dogs are not with us.

    Cloverdale Farms

    Camping at Cloverdale

We’ve got a little 20 acre hobby farm. This historic property has gently rolling hills, with a little creek amidst a couple acres of cleared, open, secluded woodland perfect for pitching a tent and listening to nature. Fields in the back lend a great view for star gazing and looking up at the Milky Way. If the peace and quiet isn’t enough for you, there are pet goats, cats, a dog, and chickens that all love attention. Guests are more than welcome to help in the garden, pick flowers, and enjoy fresh produce and eggs while they’re here. Located 5 minutes from the James River, guests can hop over to the boat landing for fishing, swimming and boating or check out Blanton and Pleasants, a community staple. If you’re a hiker, there’s a state forest and state park just a short 15 minute drive west.

    Williamsburg Campground

    Great Choice in Williamsburg

One of the best campgrounds we’ve stayed at. It’s our first experience with a KOA, and so far impressed. The whole campground is shady, and while some sites appear pretty on top of one another most, including ours, are are standard. Great amenities, including a pool and a small splash pad. The jumping pillows are awesome for the kids. The only criticisms are that the dog park is very small, and the sewer hook up for our site is nearly above the outlet (although this seems site specific). We are in Williamsburg a lot and will definitely be back.

Richmond North - Kings Dominion KOA

    Good campground

We stayed during the covid pandemic when things were just starting to open back up, so the play grounds weren’t available. The bathrooms are clean and the laundry facility is a plus. They also have a dog park which we used a ton. Most spots are shaded and there are paved and gravel roads. The spaces are very snug so forget privacy when they’re busy, but at the time we were the only ones on our little road. The store is super pricey, but overall a good campground.

    Isle of Wight Family Campground

    Nice and Very Quiet!

This is a really nice campground. They have on-site bathrooms/showers as well as laundry. It's mostly RV spots but they also allow tent camping and have a couple cabins available for rent. They have a dog park area, playground and pool. The store has items for purchase and a gathering room. They do potlucks and get togethers often for the campers. The staff is very friendly and super helpful. You can purchase firewood and propane on-site. Each spot has a concrete padded area with a picnic table and fire pit. It is a little ways out of town in any direction bit it's very nice and quiet out here as you're surrounded by woods. They also have a fishing pond and trails on-site. This really is one of the best campgrounds I've ever been to! Definitely recommend.

Guide to Petersburg

Camping options near Petersburg span a mix of county, state, and private facilities within 30 minutes of the city. Most Petersburg area campgrounds remain open year-round with limited seasonal closures from December through March at select locations. Summer humidity creates challenging camping conditions with nighttime temperatures rarely dropping below 70°F during July and August, while spring and fall offer more moderate conditions for tent campers.

What to Do

Kayaking and fishing opportunities: Chickahominy Riverfront Park provides direct water access for anglers and paddlers. "There's a dock down by the boat ramp. It says no fishing. Wait until dark and ignore the sign. There's a light down there that draws the insects. The fish are everywhere," notes Patrick R. about this spot that sits 45 minutes from Petersburg.

Biking on the Virginia Capital Trail: The paved bike path near Chickahominy Riverfront Park offers excellent cycling opportunities. "A great paved biking path that goes for a number of miles," mentions John in his review, making this an ideal base camp for cyclists wanting to explore the historic corridor between Williamsburg and Richmond.

Historical plantation tours: The working farm at Chippokes State Park Campground provides a living history experience. "This hidden gem is just a short distance from Williamsburg but yet so remote! The still working farm and homes are a treasure of how life and farms ran back in the day," reports Rose H. The park sits about 45 minutes east of Petersburg.

What Campers Like

Convenient highway access: South Forty RV Resort offers easy access for travelers using I-95. "Perfect location right off of I-95. Spot we had was spacious and easy to get in and out of," shares Katie G. This campground provides a convenient stopover for those traveling the East Coast corridor.

Swimming and water features: Many Petersburg area campgrounds maintain seasonal pools to combat summer heat. "The pool is very clean," notes Danielle H. about Chippokes State Park, while Pocahontas State Park Campground receives praise for its additional water features: "Lots of trails, nature center, pool, and creek for kayaking and fishing. You can also rent water equipment while you're there," according to Samantha G.

Shaded, private sites: Wooded camping areas provide relief from summer temperatures. "Some of the campsites are surrounded with forest. Very quiet and peaceful," explains Gregg S. about the sites at Pocahontas State Park, while Johnathan M. notes the "nice wooded campsites" at Chippokes State Park.

What You Should Know

Train noise affects some campgrounds: Light sleepers should consider train proximity when booking. "Nice, clean campsite. Only issue is you are right next to the train tracks so if you are a light sleeper you will hear those trains throughout the night," warns Alexas H. about Ed Allen's Campground and Cottages.

Seasonal operation variations: Some facilities close during winter months. Chippokes State Park operates from "last Friday in March to first Monday in December," while other campgrounds like South Forty RV Resort remain open year-round for winter camping needs.

Weekend boat traffic impacts water access: Fishing conditions change dramatically on weekends at river-adjacent campgrounds. "The place is overrun with fishermen launching boats before dawn. And I mean 25-50 trucks/trailers/boats each morning," reports John about weekend activity at Chickahominy Riverfront Park.

Tips for Camping with Families

Kid-friendly amenities: Williamsburg Campground offers numerous activities specifically designed for children. "Lots to do with kids... planned activities like petting zoo, hayrides, and movie night, and campground amenities like a pool, bounce pillows, bikes, short hiking trails, and ice cream shop," explains Courtney O.

Family-sized campsites: Some campgrounds provide extra space for families. "The campsites were spacious and we had no immediate neighbors, so we spread out," reports Katie B. about Chickahominy Riverfront Park, making this option suitable for families needing room for multiple tents or play areas.

Educational opportunities: History-focused camping trips can combine outdoor recreation with learning. "We took 6 teenagers camping and they had a blast! Especially the pool!" says Virginia B. about Chippokes State Park, which balances historical interpretation with recreational amenities teens enjoy.

Tips from RVers

Leveling requirements vary by campground: Picture Lake Campground offers paved sites that minimize setup time. "The front spots are fully paved and require minimal leveling," reports Kim O., noting the convenience for larger rigs at this dog-friendly campground near Petersburg.

Hookup configurations: Pocahontas State Park provides partial hookups for RVs. "No sewer hookups (they do have 30/50amp). Lots of hiking, fantastic mountain bike trails, lots of history," explains Ashley I., adding that the park sits "20 mins from every store you can imagine, but super quiet at night."

Extended-stay options: Several campgrounds accommodate longer visits for travelers. "We've stayed a couple weekends here and liked it so much we decided to stay a month at a time!" shares Pam W. about Ed Allen's Campground, while Picture Lake and South Forty both accommodate work travelers with extended-stay options at dog friendly campgrounds near Petersburg.
