    Magnolia City Campground

    Convenient to I90

Very basic sites. Town park. Dated and feels strange when no one else if here. But, $20 a night for full hook ups can’t be beat.

Big Sioux Recreation Area — Big Sioux

    Beautiful but pricey.

The park is on the outskirts of a little town just east of Sioux Falls. I made my reservations online ($30 for the reservation, $1.26 tax, $0.45 for more tax, and $10 for the non-resident reservation fee). The campsites are clean, spacious, and beautiful. Absolutely loved it there. I had no sooner settled in, and a woman knocked on my van asking that I pay a city tax, an additional $15. I really don't mind paying the fees as that's what supports the park...What I didn't like was that it wasn't mentioned when making the reservations. Other than that little "gotcha" it was a wonderful experience. Would definitely visit again.

Big Sioux Recreation Area — Big Sioux

    Nice for occasional family camping.

This SD State Recreation site is next to Sioux Falls. Make reservations early. It will get filled on weekends and holidays. Not a bad park for a family, first timers, or those who want to just get outside. This park may be in the city limits of Brandon SD. Grocery store, restaurants, and gas stations within about two miles. This is a very good park if you are visiting someone in the area or a traveler.

    Lake Vermillion Recreation Area

    Very nice state park

During the off-season, sep thru mid May (when the kids are in school) is the perfect time to stay at this state park. I do not stay during the high occupancy times since I don't like crowded camping, and this park is close to Sioux Falls and right off I90, which can make this place busy. There is a very nice sand beach, playgrounds, fishing, star gazing, and four campgrounds. I would not camp at the west side north area since it is very new and has very few trees. Great park if you're just passing through. Residents of South Dakota love their camping, so book a site as early as allowable. I would recommend the east campground. Very pretty. There are four very nice tent only sites in one area. I would give it five stars but to many people during the season.

Big Sioux Recreation Area — Big Sioux

    Another overnight stop.

Just another overnight stop on my drive to Iowa. I spent the night in a non-electric tent site so I can't really comment on the other parts of the campground. It does have nice bathrooms with running water and showers. The non-e tent sites are in a forested section, all shaded. Sites include picnic tables and fire rings. Sites are located a very short walk from the designated parking. I had a great night's sleep as it was relatively quiet. I didn't partake but they do have a Frisbee golf course. Took a short walk on their trail system to the suspension walking bridge. My complaint would be the fees. I thought i was paying one fee for the non-e tent site but then there was an additional fee for non-res and another fee for park day use fee or permit. This fee was confusing whether I was supposed to pay this or not. So what looked like a small fee to spend the night turned into much more.

    River Road Campground

    Convenient stop over

Super easy to access and right near Blue Mount State Park. There is a playground which is great for kids and awesome bike trails right to the sight that leads to town, river and a huge playground.

Has all hookups for 35$ a night.

I wouldn’t stay more than the night due to RVs being really close together - not so much room to open space or have privacy , but if you’re looking for a stop over it’s perfect.

    Union Grove State Park Campground

    Great overnight spot

Right off the interstate, great access. On hill, treed sites. Large sites, with power. Some back in and some pull through. Great restrooms with showers. Campground host. Make reservations on line. Limited number of sites. Dump station. You can hear the interstate, but small nice campground

What you should know

Reservation requirements: Campground booking policies vary significantly near Larchwood. At Island Park - Rock Rapids, "You need not a reservation. Come and drive in," reports one camper, while Newton Hills State Park typically requires advance booking, especially during peak summer weekends.

Fee structures: Cost variations can be significant and sometimes unexpected. One camper at Palisades State Park reported, "We made a reservation using the phone number provided. On short notice, we were charged 80+ dollars for two nights after requesting a tent site without electricity. On arrival, we were charged 30 dollars for entrance passes."

Water quality issues: Some campgrounds have specific water concerns. A Blue Mounds State Park visitor noted, "The only downside is that their water is contaminated. They provide directions to a city site where you can fill your camper tank, and they give out a gallon of drinking/cooking water when you check in."

Weather considerations: The region experiences wide temperature fluctuations. A Newton Hills camper advised, "Many campsites are almost full sun—so have your shade structure ready."

Noise factors: Both natural and human-made noise can impact camping experiences. One visitor to Island Park warned, "The night we stayed, there was racing going on at Rapid Speedway that lasted well into the evening. Extremely LOUD. Make sure to check the race schedule the night you want to stay."

Tips for camping with families

Playground access: Sioux Falls KOA offers strategic site selection for families with young children. "We requested a specific site and they were very accommodating. We got a spot right in front of the playground which was perfect for our toddler," shares a parent who appreciated the convenience.

Educational opportunities: Several campgrounds offer learning experiences integrated with recreation. At Lake Pahoja, "educational signs to help you learn about the area" complement the hiking trails, making it ideal for school-age children.

Activity planning: Look for campgrounds with scheduled events. At Sioux Falls Yogi Bear, a visitor reports, "Our family spent a long weekend here enjoying all of the activities they had to offer. Everything from laser tag to chocolate milk chugging contests. Saturday night was the yogi bear parade and it was the highlight of our entire stay."

Site selection for privacy: Consider how site layout affects family camping. One Big Sioux Recreation Area camper noted, "They had only a few tentsites available amid all the RV sites, but they were right on the edge of the playground, so the families had to walk right through my campsite to get to the play area."

Spacing between sites: Some campgrounds offer better separation for families needing space. A Lake Pahoja visitor mentioned the "Good distance from others, yet close enough for group," making it suitable for family reunions or multi-family trips.

Tips from RVers

Hookup availability: Grand Falls Casino offers both paid and free options for RVers. "They offer free dry parking in their main parking lot. FHU 30/50 available. $30 during week, $40 weekend, $50 holiday weekend," notes a visitor who used the location during Sturgis motorcycle rally travel.

Leveling considerations: Site grading varies across campgrounds. At Big Sioux Recreation Area, "Site was level. Trees surrounding area. Electric hook up but no water," reports a camper, highlighting the importance of checking specific amenities.

Access routes: Some campgrounds have challenging approaches. A Tower Campground visitor warned, "Coming off the exit, GPS wants you to make a u-turn to get to the property on the other side of the road. Not easy with toad!"

Winter camping options: Year-round RV camping is available at selected sites. At Tower Campground, "This park is open year round and well set up for cold weather, the water spigot is heated so if you invest in a heated water line and have an insulated camper you should be good for the cold."

Cell service considerations: Connectivity varies significantly. A visitor to Palisades State Park noted, "King also offers free Wi-Fi with a download speed of 22 Mbps, while Queen has no T-Mobile service.
