Best RV Parks & Resorts near Akron, IA

Lazy H Campground in Akron offers full hookup RV sites with concrete pads and level pull-through spaces. The park provides 50-amp electrical service, water, and sewer connections for motorhomes and travel trailers. "The pull through sites are fully concrete and level. They all have a huge table and stone fire pit. Plenty of room for a second vehicle," noted one visitor. Windmill RV Park Campground in Beresford, approximately 15 miles from Akron, accommodates big rigs with spacious sites featuring 50-amp electrical hookups, water connections, and sewer service. Studio 13 Motel & RV Park provides electric hookups and drinking water but lacks sewer connections, making it suitable for shorter stays.

Several RV parks in the region remain open year-round, including Windmill RV Park Campground which operates throughout all seasons. Dump stations are available at select locations, with Windmill offering on-site sanitary dump facilities. Cell service varies by provider, with one camper reporting excellent speeds at nearby parks: "Sprint/T-mobile data was around 56 Mbps down." Most parks accommodate pets, though specific restrictions may apply. During summer months, particularly on weekends, reservation availability becomes limited at popular locations. RV sites with concrete pads typically provide the most level parking options, while some parks with gravel surfaces may require additional leveling equipment for larger motorhomes.

    Cottonwood Cove Park Campground

    Tiny and QUIET!

Cottonwood Cove Park was the fifth campsite we rolled into in this tri-state area looking for a spot that we actually liked, and boy did we score! This is a little municipal park with only 12 sites, water/electric/cable TV for $22/night. Be aware that there is no dump station here. There's a small bath house that's presently closed for COVID-19 precautions.

Driveways and the road through the campground are crushed white gravel, but there are small concrete pads at each site for the rig and patio area. Large cottonwood trees tower throughout the campground. There are tiny campers and large fifth-wheels here, both. There's a campground host occupying one site, and you pay the host. Spacing between sites is very, very generous -- kudos to Dakota City for not cramming people into this place just to double the revenue.

The campground buts up right against a pretty natural stretch of the west bank of the Missouri River, with a boat launch and interpretive platform discussing Lewis & Clark's expedition that passed through here. The campground itself is tucked right into the middle of a neat, tidy residential neighborhood, such that it almost feels like you're part of the neighborhood.

It's been amazingly quiet during our stay. We've barely seen our neighbors, much less heard them even though the campground is mostly occupied. There are several rigs here that are long-term, presumably they're working at the massive Tyson Foods plant just up the road.

Cell service on Verizon is an impressive 4 bars, 42ms ping/65.6 Mbps down/24.8 Mbps up/3ms jitter.

We'd stay here again in a heartbeat.

    Scenic Park

    Along the Missouri River

Scenic Park Campground is in South Sioux City along the Missouri River. Our campsite had a river view, picnic table, and fire ring. The campground is part of a large park and was full hookups with cable and wifi included. Our site was a pull through. The area was clean and had a nice appearance. There was also 4 unique modern looking cabins and a tent area.

The park also has tennis courts, soccer fields, and baseball fields. There is a swimming pool and playgrounds, along with trails. The trails I loved were along the river. The only con was that There was a major highway on the other side of the river and ambulances would pass by with sirens going. Otherwise a nice campground.

    Scenic Park

    Nice Stopover Spot

We stayed with our class A RV on our way to and from a further destination. First spot was one right along the river. All the spots are spacious...neighbors are not on top of you. This spot had a nice concrete pad with a picnic table (not so nice with peeling paint). Views of the river and city were nice. Full hook-ups with sewer, water, electric, cable, and wi-if. Second spot was not on the river but equally spacious. No concrete pad with this one. Bathhouses were a mixed bag. One was large with numerous stalls and showers and very clean. The other quite small (2 stalls and one shower) and not so clean. Had to step around empty shampoo and conditioner bottles on floor and a used razor on the soap dish.....there in the early evening and still there around 9 the next morning. Many of the sites seemed to be extended stay and not all trailers were well kept.....plastic covering windows, haphazard decks, etc. All-in-all though an Ok stopover in a longer trip.

    Gunderson Park

Up to 14 days free camping

CAMPING IS NOW ONLY ALLOWED BETWEEN MEMORIAL DAY THROUGH LABOR DAY. NO WINTER CAMPING IS ALLOWED ANY LONGER.

Gunderson Park is a nice little boondocking location just ½ mile from the downtown area of Centerville. They have 2 fire pit locations, but, after speaking with the official at city hall we found out you can camp pretty much anywhere in the park you would like.

It is free to camp here, you can stay virtually as long as you wish to according to that same official. There are no hook-ups. No bathroom facilities. No picnic tables. No playground for children. You may fish with a South Dakota license in the lazy rolling Vermillion River that skirts the park on 3 sides. They have a cement boat ramp. I will say when we stayed there the river was so low you would have had great difficulties getting a boat launched. On the west side of the park there are park benches at the beginning (or end of the walk depending on your start location) with a cemented walk way along the road to the park and the Vermillion River. It runs close to a quarter mile long with benches about half way through the walk. The city keeps this park mowed during the summer months. This is an old old park dating back to 1800's. The trees are massive and just as old providing beautiful shade. There are remnants of old stone items remaing in the park, grape vine thingy, a stone fireplace and pillars. Our stay favored us with Bald Eagle sightings. 2 hung around the trees on the other side of the river in full view, it was wonderful.

At the city park you can dump your tanks. We didn't need to so we didn't visit this location. At the four way stop sign located at the center of the town, turn west, travel one block and on the south side of the street you will find city hall. There they will tell you how to find the dump site.

This seems to be a favorite location for locals to drive through. Sometimes we found traffic through the park on the heavy side but most of the time very quiet. People are small town friendly. Population is around 900 people. Town has a grocery store, convenience store, bank, medical clinic, pharmacy, restaurant, bowling alley, auto parts store, bakery and other businesses. We noticed 4 churches in our drive around the town. At the city park they have a community swimming pool, Frisbee golf, 2 ball diamonds, tennis courts, playground equipment, volleyball courts, 2 picnic house areas and a location for 4 RV campsites with electrical plug ins [2 50 amp and 2 30 amp) for $10.00 a night with limited stay.

    Scenic Park

    Nice quiet park

Host was very friendly and helpful. They had some spots on the river. We stayed in a pull through that was very spacious with picnic table and fire pit. Spectated by trees so your not on top of your neighbor. Bathrooms and showers were very clean! Although no hand soap so bring your own. Showers were free and they had bikes you could check out to ride around. Park is super close to huge park with Tennis courts and other activities.

    Scenic Park

    Nice Stopover Spot

We stayed with our class A RV on our way to and from a further destination in early July. First spot was one right along the river. All the spots are spacious...neighbors are not on top of you. This spot had a nice concrete slab with a picnic table (not so nice with peeling paint). Views of the river and city were nice. Full hook-ups with sewer, water, electric and (spotty) WiFi. Second spot was not on the river but equally spacious. No concrete patio with this one. Bathhouse’s were a mixed bag. One was large with numerous stalls and showers and very clean. The other quite small (2 stalls and one shower) and not so clean. Had to step around empty shampoo and conditioner bottles on the floor and a used razor on the soap dish...there in the early evening and still around 9 the next morning. Many sites seemed to be extended stay and not all were well kept...plastic covering windows, haphazard decks, etc. All-in-all though an OK one night stopover spot if you’re traveling through.

Guide to Akron

RV parks near Akron, Iowa offer camping options within a largely agricultural landscape at approximately 1,200 feet elevation. The area experiences four distinct seasons with humid summers reaching 80°F and winters dropping below freezing. Local campsites provide access to the Missouri River ecosystem where wildlife viewing and fishing are common activities throughout the warmer months.

What to do

Hiking trails: Ponca State Park features multiple trail systems with varying difficulty levels. "Aside from the river, there are trails and a pool. Friends have said there are many very recent additions including rock climbing walls, archery, horseback riding, etc. The charm of the area is still there: riverfront views, rolling hills, simple trails through nature," notes Dan N.

Fishing opportunities: Both river and lake fishing available in the region. "So much fishing! River and lake. Very peaceful during the spring and fall. Great mushroom hunting in the hills," reports Molly M. about Riverfront Campground.

Swimming activities: Lazy H Campground offers a swimming beach with floating platforms. "The beach has giant floating lily pads that the kids loved. There are showers on the beach to wash off feet after you're done swimming," according to Angela W.

Horseback riding: Some parks offer trail rides for visitors. "Ponca is awesome. It's set at the edge of rolling wheat fields over looking the Missouri river. The woods are lush and full of deer, turkeys and other critters (also ticks...)," shares Luke L.

What campers like

Clean facilities: Union Grove State Park Campground maintains well-kept bathrooms. "Definitely one of the cleanest most well kept campgrounds I've seen in a while. Shower rooms/bathrooms are immaculate, and smell so nice," says Austin and Natasha S.

Wooded sites: Shaded camping spots provide relief from summer heat. "Small, cozy, shady campground, awesome camp hosts, private restrooms/showers, nice playground for kids. 30& 50 amp service, dump station," shares Riding with S.

Wildlife viewing: Newton Hills Campground offers opportunities to observe local fauna. "This beautiful park set just 9 miles south of Canton, SD has something for everyone. If you enjoy water activities, spend some time at Lake Lakota swimming, kayaking, fishing, or just relaxing!" writes Lisa H.

Accessible water recreation: Several campgrounds feature lakes or river access. "We camped in the Riverfront campground. No one else there on a Thursday night so we had the whole river to ourselves. Very peaceful. Good-sized grassy sites. Table, fire ring, water, pit toilet," notes Janet K.

What you should know

Reservation timing: Summer weekends fill quickly at popular RV parks in Akron, Iowa. Advance booking recommended, especially for holiday periods. "We pulled in after office hours and easily found several primitive walk up sites to choose from," states Joe R.

Seasonal variations: Parker RV Campground offers year-round access with varying amenities by site. "This is a very nice stop over. Sites 1 - 4 have water, electric (50, 30, 15 amp) and sewer. Those sites go for $25.00 per day. Sites 5 - 6 are electric only and are in full sun," reports Bibs O.

Highway noise: Some campgrounds experience road noise from nearby interstates. "Convenient to the interstate, but that also means some highway noise if you are not in a hard sided camper," mentions Leslie B. about Union Grove State Park.

Site privacy considerations: Campsite spacing varies significantly between parks. "Beautiful, quiet, shaded, level sites with plenty of space between. Great trails and a short scenic road, plus some nice open spaces," notes Victor E. about Newton Hills.

Tips for camping with families

Playground access: Multiple campgrounds offer play areas for children. "Great park with multiple trails and great playgrounds. Great woods with trails," says Isaac E. about Newton Hills State Park.

Educational opportunities: Ryken's RV Park provides family-friendly facilities. "We were showed around the park, which has a large building (club house) with large TV and play room. There are washers/dryers available as well," explains Ron B.

Water activities for kids: Several parks feature swimming areas with kid-friendly amenities. "Lazy H was the best experience for our family during our summer RV travels. We hiked, picked sweet corn, spent time on the water & enjoyed the beach, relaxed with a wonderful view!" shares Steven D.

Spacious camping areas: Look for sites that accommodate family gatherings. "If you want a nice place to camp in NE Nebraska, this is it. Lots of shade, hiking, trail rides, campsites are pretty and easily usable. Enough space for 6 people easily," recommends Mark H.

Tips from RVers

Site leveling: Most RV parks near Akron provide relatively level spaces but preparation is still recommended. "The sites are spaced out, concrete pads and pull thru! We took a nice stroll through the woods also! Can't wait to go back this year!" shares Toneca S. about Lazy H Campground.

Hookup availability: Electric service ranges from 30-50 amp depending on location. "The park itself is well maintained and the pads are even. We have a small Class C motorhome. There are sewer, water and electrical 30/50 amp hook ups," notes Ron B.

Storage options: Some RV parks offer seasonal or winter storage. "We also stored our RV for the winter at the park and the fees are very cheap to do that. The overall cost of the seasonal spot is the lowest of all the other parks," mentions a visitor to Ryken's.

Internet connectivity: Cell service varies by provider and location. "There is free WiFi which covers the park well. The cellular service with Verizon has full bars at our location," reports Ron B.
