Red Rock Canyon Adventure Park provides tent sites, RV spots, cabin accommodations, and glamping options that allow pets throughout its unique canyon setting. The park features multiple campground areas within the canyon, including Canyon Campground with shaded sites and Walnut Grove area with gravel camping loops. Tent campers can choose from sites with picnic tables and fire rings, while RV campers have access to electric hookups and water connections. Territory Route 66 RV Park & Campgrounds also welcomes pets at their 18 sites with full hookups. Campers note that dogs particularly enjoy the walking trails through the red rock formations, with the Rough Horsetail Nature Trail being paved for part of its length for easier pet walking. Bathrooms with running water are available throughout these campgrounds, though cleanliness can vary.

Hiking trails throughout Red Rock Canyon provide excellent exercise opportunities for dogs, with the canyon's unique landscape offering protection from prairie winds. The campground sits below striking red canyon walls with a creek running along the canyon bottom, creating a lush green environment that contrasts with the surrounding plains. The park contains a small fishing pond where pets can cool off near the water, though swimming is limited. Sites typically include fire pits, picnic tables, and charcoal grills for comfortable camping with pets. Campers should be aware that bugs can be problematic during warmer months, so appropriate pet protection is recommended. The bathrooms throughout the park are functional but described as outdated, with cleanliness issues noted during busier periods. The Dyrt includes reviews of campgrounds near Hinton, Oklahoma.

A fine place to recharge before embarking on your next journey

We stayed here for one night on our way from Raton, NM to Devil’s Den State Park in AR. The campground was well staffed, clean, and signs clearly marking the entrances to the property and sites by number.

We stayed in pull-in site #59, which is paved. The site was perfectly level left to right and we barely dropped our tongue jack to level front to back. There is a laundry, playground, and dog park where the pups can run free off leash.

The coolest part of the campground is the store / office / bar, called “The Moose Knuckle Tavern” (lol). They have pizza, wings, burgers, a salad, and some apps. Call about 30 minutes ahead so you can place your order and not have to wait for your food. Also, plan your stay around not being here on a Sunday. The campground is in one of only 5 counties in Oklahoma that don’t allow alcohol sales on Sundays...lame.

      Mustang Run RV Park

      Great campground

We were traveling through and stopped for a couple of nights to visit family. It’s a wonderful park that fit our needs because it was close to our family. Concrete pull through and back ins were level and spacious. Small pool and had several areas to walk our dog. Also a small off lead dog park. Laundry room was nice and very clean $2 to wash and $1.50 to dry. We absolutely loved the park. The only exception is the road noise. The interstate is within sight which does make it easy on and off, but also for some road noise. But we would definitely stay again because that’s the only con for us.

      🐃 🐃 🐃

Plenty of spaces with full hookups, cable/wifi, but spaces are close together. No fire ring. We asked to change our site and they accommodated us. Friendly staff with small store. They have small, but nicely maintained dog park. They have live buffalo, too! Pool, jacuzzi, laundry, and bathhouse.

      Wanderlust Crossings RV Park

      Absolutely stunning

We picked this place because of its convenience to route 40 and what a suprise. The grounds are stunning! Each space had cement slabs that are level which made our night stop so easy. The grass is thick and meticulously cared for. The dog park even has lush grass! We had an amazing stay.

      Wanderlust Crossings RV Park

      Nice quiet spot

Only stayed one night but would have stayed longer. Quiet place with nice landscaping. Concrete level pull thru with full hookups. Picnic table and fire pit at each lot. Has dog park, basketball court, playground and laundry facilities. Cellular good plus free wifi up to 800mb but can upgrade for $5. Cost was $45 a night but offered military discount. Gift shop does not have much but there is a gas station down the road that is easy in/out. Would have given it 5 stars if the nice lady who checked us in didn’t lie to me when I asked if there were vending machines in laundry room as we did not have detergent and she said no. Thank goodness we walked down there anyways.

      Mustang Run RV Park

      Excellent RV Park

This RV Park is very very nice. It sits right beside the highway, so there is quite a bit of traffic noise, but other than that, This RV park is top of the line. I generally prefer a more rural setting, but we came to OKC to visit friends and found this gem. The parking spaces are wide and easy to get in and out of. Of course full hook ups with 50 amp service. There was cable TV, with lots of channels (a luxury we have not experienced on our three month journey). The cell service was good here (AT&T), and the park wifi worked better here than any other place we’ve stayed. It is Springtime here in Oklahoma City, so that means tornado season. Not my favorite thing - torrential rains, hail, wind, thunder, lightening, and every bodies favorite - tornadoes! We stayed here for a week, and nearly every night we had buckets of rain. We were glued to the news channels a couple of nights in fear of golfball sized hail, or worse - the dreaded tornado! This Was V park has 4 or 5 underground shelters, which is somewhat of a comfort. The dog park here is good. They have trash pick up service everyday- you just put your bag out by your camper and they come pick it up. While here, we went to the Bombing Memorial. I would definitely come back - just not in the Spring!

      Rockwell RV Park

      Ok

Staff was friendly but the wifi is so unstable I couldn't stay connected. Spaces are very close and gravel. Not in the best part of town and a little sketchy. It was ok overall, but overpriced for what you get. Half the washers and dryers weren't working and the machines were dirty. The little dog park was nice but not well kept, and the playground area seemed more like junk storage. No buffalo, but I think that's a good thing because the pen they were kept in seemed really small. I'd stay there again in a pinch, but not proactively. I hope they improve on some things so I can change my mind.

      Red Rock Canyon Adventure Park

      Beautiful and well kept

I came here with my dog and cat in April and I would say it is one of the most beautiful well kept campgrounds I’ve ever been in as I make my way cross country from Florida to California that wasn’t all booked up and in fact, I was the only tenter there.

I picked a spot that had a red rock wall cove because I knew it would protect us from the coyotes. And I was right — by dusk you can hear them howl and yelp in the bushes so definitely watch your pets especially at night.

The camping spots are big enough, so you have ample room. I could’ve probably fit 3 to 4 tents easily in my spot with room to spare.

The only thing is, there’s no water at the tent site so I borrowed some from the recreational spigot across the way.

The bathrooms are semi-rustic but I’m sure you’ll survive.

There were a lot of old trees and moss on the ground so the ecology is really healthy and I don’t know if it’s because I was there in the spring.

I also like that they have ice and firewood delivery. Their café and snack bar was also a nice touch.

I saw mostly RVs. But they’re mostly in the back of the park.

They also have other amenities like a swimming pool, volleyball courts, playgrounds etc. It would be a perfect place for a family event.

      Red Rock Canyon Adventure Park

A Magical Place Tucked Away in Oklahoma

My dog, Ava, and I joined a group of fellow teardrop campers in a surprisingly unique and fascinating campground in Oklahoma. This campground, formally known as Red Rock Canyon State Park, has now become simply Red Rock Canyon Campground. The state park was slated for closure when a local family from the nearby town of Hinton negotiated to lease this lovely place from the state in order to keep this local gem open for both day use and camping.

WOW, what a great service they have done for camper travelers. After checking in at the friendly office, we found ourselves driving down a somewhat steep and winding road into the canyon. Now I'm pulling a 2300 pound teardrop, but plenty of big rigs have also made it down with no problems. The place really is enchanting. The tent sites are tucked right into the canyon walls, and full hook ups, while not tucked in are right inside the canyon as well. With kids in mind, there are many playgrounds as well as repelling and trails for adult types, but you must bring your own climbing equipment.

The one downside for me was the pay showers. It was 75 cents for a six minute shower, and change machines were right there, but hey, I want free showers.

    Guide to Hinton

Red Rock Canyon Adventure Park sits in a distinctive box canyon with striking red sandstone bluffs that drop below the surrounding plains. The canyon walls rise 80-100 feet above the canyon floor, creating a protected microclimate that shields campers from Oklahoma's prairie winds. This unique geological feature contains natural springs and small waterfalls that feed the vegetation along the canyon floor, supporting wildlife including rabbits, deer, squirrels, and armadillos.

    What to do

Trail hiking with elevation changes: The Inspiration Point Trail at Roman Nose State Park offers moderate hiking with some steep grades. "Trails led off in all directions and the view from on top of the bluff was extraordinary. I traversed several trails on the top of the bluff and am still in awe at the view," notes Lyn B. The Spring Loop Trail with the Spring Pavilion is also recommended.

Fishing for specific catches: Fort Cobb Lake provides excellent fishing opportunities with distinct seasonal patterns. "During the Fall and Winter months the lake provides great Trout Fishing that is stocked every 2 weeks," shares William A. about Roman Nose State Park. The small fishing ponds at various campgrounds contain crappie and other warm-water species.

Water recreation options: Beyond basic swimming, several parks offer expanded water activities. "The park contains a small fishing lake and a paved hiking trail with handicap access," mentions Lyn B. about Red Rock Canyon. At Foss State Park, "This campground offers an area sectioned off for swimmers. A lot of room is available for boating fun whether it be fishing, skiing, tubing, etc," says Colton K.

Historical exploration: The region contains significant historical sites. At Territory Route 66 RV Park & Campgrounds, you can experience "Historic Route 66 with easy off and on Historic Route 66 and I-40," while being "Within 5 miles of restaurants, laundromat, groceries, fuel, historic sites, tourist attractions."

    What campers like

Climate-controlled facilities: Unlike many rustic campgrounds, several parks offer air conditioning in common areas. At Foss State Park Campground, Amy H. mentions, "Unfortunately, it was a very hot and humid day but we were pleasantly surprised by the air-conditioned bathrooms. I've been camping a lot, but that was a first!"

Canyon-based protection: The terrain creates natural shelter from Oklahoma's notoriously windy conditions. "It's interesting upon driving across flat plains and arriving at a canyon in the middle of it all!" explains Cheryl M. about Red Rock Canyon. Dana H. adds about Roman Nose: "The map said it was there, but we couldn't see it. That's because it's in a canyon. Gorgeous valley with abundant forest."

Dog friendly campgrounds near Hinton: Most campgrounds welcome pets with dedicated exercise areas. At Wanderlust Crossings RV Park, Drew S. notes, "The sites are huge and well spaced out. The landscaping is freshly maintained," while Sommer J. adds, "Has dog park, basketball court, playground and laundry facilities."

Full hookup availability: Territory Route 66 RV Park provides "Full hookups, easy in and out of park, literally on Route 66 with easy off and on Historic Route 66 and I-40; 20' x 70' level slips." Debbie J. confirms, "There are several long term sites, with very nice, well kept RV's. The short term sites are out in the open and all but one are large pull throughs."

    What you should know

Seasonal bug concerns: Insects can be problematic during warmer months, requiring preparation. "Bugs were bad, thermacell worked great for the mosquitoes. Lots of flies," reports Cheryl M. about Red Rock Canyon. At Lake El Reno RV Park, travelers should note that bathrooms "are closed at night. Bathrooms and showers within campground, but are closed at night," according to Susan B.

Shower payment systems: Many Oklahoma state parks require payment for showers. Jo A. explains at Foss State Park, "Rv sites have great bath houses with toilets, a paved parking lot, and the showers are coin operated." Similarly, William A. notes about Roman Nose, "bring quarters for the hot showers."

Limited tent facilities: The amenities for tent campers can differ significantly from RV areas. Jo A. notes, "Tent campers have unpaved roads along with a permanent building for the toilet provided (basically a huge hole under the toilet like a porta potty and no showers). However, every tent site has a water spigot."

Overnight noise factors: Several dog friendly campgrounds near Hinton experience noise issues. Kathy K. warns about Red Rock Canyon: "It has day use visitors, and unfortunately the ones with the loud music next to my spot did not leave until close to midnight. It is a small canyon so noise travels very well."

    Tips for camping with families

Playground amenities: El Reno West KOA offers extensive children's facilities. Sarah S. reports, "Paved roads were great for bike riding, beautiful lake along the back side of the grounds, nice large dog run, clean and plenty of machines in the laundry area, super cool playground with outdoor workout equipment too."

Seasonal events for kids: Certain parks host family-oriented activities throughout the year. Colton K. shares that Foss State Park Rangers "do special events during the year like fireworks on the lake for the 4th of July, haunted trails and trick or treating for Halloween, some other events here and there year round."

Kid-friendly water areas: Look for designated swimming zones with gradual entry. Brittany J. recommends El Reno West KOA: "Pool, pedal carts, jumping pillow, and a playground for the kids! Super friendly staff." For water activities, Kassi S. notes about Fort Cobb's Whites Catfish Cove campground: "Walking distance to lake beach swim area and playground directly across from this site (great if you have kids)."

Wildlife viewing opportunities: Many children enjoy animal sightings at pet friendly campgrounds. Sarah S. mentions, "Plus the kids got a big kick out of the two Buffalo on the grounds!" at El Reno West KOA. Similarly, Myron C. notes, "We were fascinated by the long mural, the teepee, and the bison in the pen."
