Red Rock Canyon Adventure Park sits 1,585 feet above sea level in a box canyon surrounded by distinctive red sandstone cliffs near Hinton, Oklahoma. The cabin accommodations in this area provide a unique camping experience with canyon walls rising dramatically above the campsites. Winter temperatures typically range from 25-45°F, while summer temperatures can reach 90-100°F with high humidity.
What to do
Hiking trails: Red Rock Canyon Adventure Park offers several trails where campers can explore the red sandstone formations. "Fun and relaxing, always have a good experience here!" says Sarah W. about her camping experience at Red Rock Canyon Adventure Park.
Fishing opportunities: Fort Cobb State Park Campground provides excellent fishing spots near its cabin accommodations. One camper noted, "We stayed at Fort Cobb State Park more than once. Always a great experience, quiet park, marina, golf course, and you can't come to this park without visiting the Ski-Boy, a classic burger joint in Fort Cobb right on the way to the lake." The lake is stocked regularly and fishing licenses are required.
Climbing and rappelling: The sandstone walls at Red Rock Canyon provide various climbing opportunities for different skill levels. "The box canyon is set for climbing or repelling, no matter what your experience level. I am a little old lady in my 60's and had the opportunity to climb one of the smaller bluff walls (about 10' high) and was absolutely awed by the scenery once I topped the wall," shares Lyn B.
What campers like
Canyon views: The unique landscape creates a striking setting for cabin stays. "This park was saved by a local who has leased it for the next 50 years! Oklahoma was going to close it down! Great RV and tent sites! Very family friendly, pool, camp store, playgrounds and numerous rappelling sites," says Jenny F. about Roman Nose State Park.
Wildlife watching: Many cabins provide opportunities to observe local wildlife. "Full of wildlife, rabbits, deer, squirrels and armadillos abound. I am sure that there are more diverse animals in the area, but these were the ones we saw," reports a visitor at Red Rock Canyon Adventure Park.
Seasonal activities: Roman Nose State Park offers seasonal attractions near its cabin accommodations. "During the Fall and Winter months the lake provides great Trout Fishing that is stocked every 2 weeks. The Park itself also offers horsebacking, Canoes, Paddleboats, Swimming pool, Miniature Golf, and a full 18 hole Golf course," writes William A.
What you should know
Site selection: Some cabin areas provide more privacy than others. A visitor to Fort Cobb State Park Campground advises, "We stayed in the Whites Catfish Cove campground at site #16 during Father's Day Weekend. This site was located on both sides of the roadway and was at the end of the road. It was hard to back into given the many vehicles parked on the street. I would not recommended this site for longer rv's or travel trailers."
Weather considerations: The canyon location affects local weather patterns. "Camped here in June and the canyon provided a nice break from the heat. Worth the stop," notes Nate C. about Red Rock Canyon.
Noise levels: Some cabin areas have more day visitors than others. "I don't know that I would be back to this campsite again unless on a weekday. It has day use visitors, and unfortunately the ones with the loud music next to my spot did not leave until close to midnight. It is a small canyon so noise travels very well," shares Kathy K.
Tips for camping with families
Pool access: El Reno West KOA offers family-friendly amenities near its cabins. "Pool, pedal carts, jumping pillow, and a playground for the kids! Super friendly staff. If you need full hook ups, those are basically a parking lot. However, there's some really nice shaded electric/water sites for RVs and tent sites," says Brittany J.
Wildlife encounters: Cabins at Rockwell RV Park provide unique wildlife viewing. "The kids loved the 7 baby Buffalo on the property," writes lauren W. about her stay at Rockwell RV Park.
Budget-friendly options: Some cabin properties offer additional perks. "They have free coffee and muffins every morning. Bathouses were very clean and well kept. Didnt look at them but there are Buffalo there in a pen," notes Richard about Rockwell RV Park.
Tips from RVers
Site spacing: Space between cabins and RV sites varies considerably. At Foss State Park Campground, "Sites are pull through and big enough to fit a 40' fifth wheel. Electric/water and sewer hook ups are available as well as restrooms and showers," according to Janette M.
Camp store options: Not all cabin locations have equal amenities. "We camped in China Berry campground, but had China berries all over everything when we left. The marina has a restaurant that has decent food and is reasonably priced," shares Jo A. about Foss State Park.
Laundry considerations: For extended cabin stays, laundry facilities may be important. "The showers and bathrooms do take quarters to operate. I think a 7 min shower is $1.50 but well worth the hot shower," notes William A. about Fort Cobb State Park.
