Best Campgrounds near Valhalla, NY

Campgrounds near Valhalla, New York range from county-managed parks to state-operated recreation areas, with several options within a 30-mile radius. Harriman State Park's Beaver Pond Campground offers tent and RV sites amid forested settings, while Croton Point Park provides waterfront camping along the Hudson River with tent, RV, and cabin accommodations. The region includes both established facilities with electrical hookups and more primitive options like the hiking-access sites along the Suffern-Bear Mountain Trail. Most campgrounds feature fire rings and picnic tables, with several offering shower facilities and water access.

Access to many campgrounds requires advance reservations, particularly during peak summer months when sites fill quickly. "Only 45 minutes from Sleepy Hollow and Tarrytown, beautiful park with deer running through it," noted one visitor to Beaver Pond Campground. Winter camping is limited to select locations like Ward Pound Ridge Reservation and Croton Point Park, which remain open year-round. The terrain varies significantly between campgrounds, with some offering relatively flat, developed sites and others requiring moderate hikes to reach primitive camping areas. Many parks enforce quiet hours starting at 10 PM, with staff regularly monitoring compliance. Cell service can be spotty in more remote areas of Harriman State Park and along hiking trails.

The camping experience near Valhalla varies dramatically between weekdays and weekends. One camper wrote about Harriman State Park: "This is a great campground during the week. Very few people. There are a few secluded campgrounds and lots of forest to explore. The weekends get a bit busy with families coming upstate." Mixed-use campgrounds like Mountain Lakes Park and Ward Pound Ridge Reservation offer hiking trails, swimming areas, and recreational fields adjacent to camping areas. Several campgrounds feature shelters or lean-tos as alternatives to traditional tent camping, particularly appealing during unpredictable weather. Proximity to New York City makes these camping areas popular weekend destinations, with Ward Pound Ridge Reservation receiving praise for feeling secluded despite being close to urban areas. Wildlife sightings, including deer and small mammals, are commonly reported across multiple camping areas.

    Skyline RV Camp - Waterfront

    Waterfront Skyline Views, Clean Bathrooms

A little intimidating driving in to a nondescript gate at the end of a narrow street but the overall experience exceeded expectation. It’s essentially a spacious parking lot with electrical pedestals but the view of the skyline across the water is spectacular and there’s a metro station within a 10-minute walk. The area feels safe and is pedestrian friendly, even at night (we were there Halloween night and we took our kids out trick-or-treating just outside the gate). During the day, I saw another RV patron walking to do their laundry just outside the complex on the next street over (I didn’t ask where exactly). On-site bathrooms were warm and clean. There were portable showers available but beware the broken shower head holders and lack of shelving/hooks for towels & clothing. This was a minor issue considering the convenience of RV accommodations so easily accessible within the NYC region, would definitely recommend. I couldn’t find a map prior to my booking but would suggest requesting the highest number site available for best direct views.

Ten Mile River Shelter — Appalachian National Scenic Trail

    Not a public campground!

Ten Mile River Shelter and campsite is not a public campground. Sure, anyone can camp there, but it is designated for folks hiking the A.T., whether thru-hikers, section hikers, or whatever. While there are no rules about who can camp there, during thru-hiking season, consideration should be made for folks who rely on places like this during a long distance hike. It is at least a mile if not a mile and a half from approved parking (on the side of the road off the A.T.) to camp, either from the A.T. or a combo of the A.T. and a blue blaze trail (which is easier, imo). There are also no fires allowed on the CT A.T.

    New York City North-Newburgh KOA

    Good amenities and fun experience!

Campsites Great campsites, wooded and cozy, though a little tight for longer rigs as our neighbors found out when they ran over a wooden post backing in. But spaced apart nicely with lots of vegetation between. Nice and level. Amenities Bathrooms are older and need of some repair but let me tell you I was very happy to see a normal shower head with real hot water! So no complaints here. Laundry facilities were clean and open 24/7 with reasonable prices 2.50/2.00 washer/dryer. And the dryers actually worked. Small dog park, communal spaces, and a camp store all made the place feel like a little village. They even have a wine store- cab sav was good. WiFi I work remotely and WiFi is always an issue. We have Starlink but in a wooded campsite, connecting is an issue but luckily their WiFi was great. Had no issues and could stream just fine. Halloween! We visited mid October and folks had sites decorated and the KOA has trick or treating and other activities every weekend in Oct. we were SO bummed to be leaving on a Friday and miss the festivities because it looked really fun. Would definitely go back. Also, staff was super nice.

    Taconic Hereford Multiple Use Park

    Convenient pit stop

This spot is easy to find and access, and had decent ATT service. There's only a few spots, and the road is narrow with not much turnaround room, I wouldn't recommend for trailers or RVs.

    Sylvan Lake Beach Park

Great Beach Lake for summer swimming and Boating

This is an old campground, but is quite quaint. Reminds me of lake camping that I grew up with. Hosts are very nice and helpful. This is more of a seasonal camping site. Do not follow your GPS directions. Get directions from the campground staff.

    High Point State Park Campground

    Relaxing and Well-Maintained

Stayed 2 nights and it was really nice. Camping for summer is pretty limited to Sawmill Lake, as the other locations are for groups or winter camping. Camps are secluded from each other and most if not all have an elevated space to put tents or chairs. Each place comes with a lamp hang, a fire pit, and a picnic table. Bathrooms are spaced out. No running water except for pump founded outside of the bathrooms. Toilets are pump flushed. Showers are only located INSIDE High Point State Park, not throughout the campsites, but entry is free for campers. One hiking trail is accessible in Sawmill campground, 3 others are accessible on the road outside of the campground and the rest are located inside the park. When you arrive you have to check in with the park office for your campsite tag. Hours are 8-4. Park officials come through the campsites pretty regularly, a few times a day which is nice. Areas are clean and well maintained.
