Best Campgrounds near Thiells, NY

Campgrounds near Thiells, New York range from developed facilities to primitive backcountry sites across Harriman State Park and surrounding areas. Beaver Pond Campground, located approximately 7 miles west of Thiells in Harriman State Park, serves as a central camping hub offering tent platforms, RV sites, and traditional camping areas. The region includes several other options like Sebago Cabin Camp with cabin accommodations, Croton Point Park with year-round availability, and West Point FMWR facilities that provide glamping experiences alongside traditional camping.

Access to most campgrounds remains seasonal, with many facilities operating from April through October or early December. Harriman State Park maintains specific rules against alcohol consumption while nearby West Point recreation areas permit it. "Campers should be mindful of putting food and garbage away before sleeping as wildlife roam around campsites," notes one visitor to Beaver Pond. Platforms at several campgrounds provide elevated tent surfaces beneficial during wet conditions. Most developed campgrounds feature amenities like showers, flush toilets, and picnic tables, though primitive backcountry sites along hiking trails require self-sufficiency. Reservation requirements vary by location, with weekends filling quickly during summer months.

The camping experience differs significantly between developed and backcountry sites in the region. Beaver Pond receives mixed reviews regarding privacy, with some campers noting sites can feel "crammed in" while others praise certain sections for their seclusion. A reviewer mentioned, "The biggest positive about Beaver Pond is how spread out it was. You definitely feel like you have your own space and are not camping on top of your neighbor." Backcountry options along the Appalachian Trail offer more solitude but require hiking in with supplies. Proximity to recreational waters represents a consistent highlight, with Lake Welch and Lake Tiorati providing swimming and boating opportunities. Wildlife encounters, particularly black bears, represent a common consideration throughout the area, requiring proper food storage at all campground options.

    Skyline RV Camp - Waterfront

    Waterfront Skyline Views, Clean Bathrooms

A little intimidating driving in to a nondescript gate at the end of a narrow street but the overall experience exceeded expectation. It’s essentially a spacious parking lot with electrical pedestals but the view of the skyline across the water is spectacular and there’s a metro station within a 10-minute walk. The area feels safe and is pedestrian friendly, even at night (we were there Halloween night and we took our kids out trick-or-treating just outside the gate). During the day, I saw another RV patron walking to do their laundry just outside the complex on the next street over (I didn’t ask where exactly). On-site bathrooms were warm and clean. There were portable showers available but beware the broken shower head holders and lack of shelving/hooks for towels & clothing. This was a minor issue considering the convenience of RV accommodations so easily accessible within the NYC region, would definitely recommend. I couldn’t find a map prior to my booking but would suggest requesting the highest number site available for best direct views.

Gunx Camping on a Horse Farm

No Amenities but Great Location for the Gunks

This campground is just mowed spots on a hillside in Kerhonkson. There are no facilities aside from some port-o-sans that the owners didn't recommend using. But the location is great for accessing the Shawamhunks. Given the lack of affordable RV campgrounds (and even the few expensive ones) in the area, this stands out.

Ten Mile River Shelter — Appalachian National Scenic Trail

    Not a public campground!

Ten Mile River Shelter and campsite is not a public campground. Sure, anyone can camp there, but it is designated for folks hiking the A.T., whether thru-hikers, section hikers, or whatever. While there are no rules about who can camp there, during thru-hiking season, consideration should be made for folks who rely on places like this during a long distance hike. It is at least a mile if not a mile and a half from approved parking (on the side of the road off the A.T.) to camp, either from the A.T. or a combo of the A.T. and a blue blaze trail (which is easier, imo). There are also no fires allowed on the CT A.T.

    Osa Trail

    Gorgeous Views

Had a great time here with my wife and 2 little kids and our dog.  One of the most beautiful sunrises we've ever seen!  Very secluded, though Alex is right down the driveway so didn't feel like the middle of nowhere.

    Tri-State RV Park

    Friendly Owners and Reasonable rates

We just stayed the night last minute. We hit unexpected traffic on the way and the owners were kind enough to wait for us to check in. The sites aren’t anything glamorous but the hookups are great and easy to pull through. It is by the highway so it can be loud at times but I don’t mind. Beautiful river on the property. Bathroom and showers were clean and well stocked.

    Mills Norrie State Park Campground

    Great staff but back-to-back campsite

We stayed a coupe of days in Oct. This is a beautiful site to camp out. The staffs are friendly and very attentive.
Bathroom and water pressure was ok. But one shower location for 50 campsites. Three small showers units and three toilet.
I never stayed a state campsite where the sites are so close each other. If you like a “normal” distance to your neighbors, I'd not recommend this place.

    New York City North-Newburgh KOA

    Good amenities and fun experience!

Campsites Great campsites, wooded and cozy, though a little tight for longer rigs as our neighbors found out when they ran over a wooden post backing in. But spaced apart nicely with lots of vegetation between. Nice and level. Amenities Bathrooms are older and need of some repair but let me tell you I was very happy to see a normal shower head with real hot water! So no complaints here. Laundry facilities were clean and open 24/7 with reasonable prices 2.50/2.00 washer/dryer. And the dryers actually worked. Small dog park, communal spaces, and a camp store all made the place feel like a little village. They even have a wine store- cab sav was good. WiFi I work remotely and WiFi is always an issue. We have Starlink but in a wooded campsite, connecting is an issue but luckily their WiFi was great. Had no issues and could stream just fine. Halloween! We visited mid October and folks had sites decorated and the KOA has trick or treating and other activities every weekend in Oct. we were SO bummed to be leaving on a Friday and miss the festivities because it looked really fun. Would definitely go back. Also, staff was super nice.

    Taconic Hereford Multiple Use Park

    Convenient pit stop

This spot is easy to find and access, and had decent ATT service. There's only a few spots, and the road is narrow with not much turnaround room, I wouldn't recommend for trailers or RVs.

Dingmans Campground — Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area

    Beautiful, wooded, campsites

I’m stopping through for the night and so grateful that I did. This campground is lovely. The spots are wooded so you have a bit of privacy. And you are so close to activities throughout the park. I’m changing my schedule to enjoy the campground and park a bit tomorrow.

Guide to Thiells

Camping options near Thiells, New York span both Rockland and Westchester counties, with elevation ranging from 500 to 1,300 feet throughout the region. Most sites operate from April through October, though select locations like Croton Point Park remain open year-round. Weekend reservations typically require booking 3-6 months in advance during peak summer season due to proximity to New York City.

What to do

Swimming at Welch Lake: During summer months, Beaver Pond Campground offers access to nearby Welch Lake where lifeguards monitor a sandy beach. "Great location and quick to get to from NYC. 45 minute drive and location has a lot of amenities... Hike trails are all over the place and the lake is nearby," notes Kelvin in a review.

Historic hiking: The area around Ward Pound Ridge Reservation contains over 40 miles of trails through varying terrain. One camper explains, "There is elevation gain, creeks, and open fields for stargazing. You have the options of a lean to here." Revolutionary War-era sites dot the landscape throughout the region.

Rock scrambling: For experienced hikers, Suffern-Bear Mountain from Gate Hill Road Primitive offers challenging terrain leading to primitive campsites. "At one point of the trail is a very difficult, but doable, rock scramble up the side of the mountain. At the top of the scramble is a primitive camping site with amazing views," reports Ethan K.

What campers like

Platform camping: Many sites at The Stephen & Betsy Corman AMC Harriman Outdoor Center feature elevated tent platforms. "I camped on one of the platforms, which was very nice and did not feel crowded even with other people on neighboring platforms," reports Ilya F. Platforms keep tents dry during wet weather.

Seasonal quietness: Mid-week and off-season camping provides more solitude. At Fahnestock State Park, one reviewer noted: "We stayed here on a Thursday night in September prior to taking off backpacking. The campground was clean and quiet... Ranger said that during summer weekends the grounds fill up and can be quite noisy, but mid-week during the off-season it was great."

Proximity to NYC: Most campsites in the region sit within 30-60 minutes of the city limits. "About 30 minutes from sleepy hollow and tarrytown NY and only an hour to central park!! Deer running everywhere and surprisingly beautiful and quaint," writes Megan B. about Beaver Pond Campground.

What you should know

Bear activity: Wildlife management is a priority throughout the region. "The wildlife do roam around your campsite so be mindful of putting food and garbage away before sleeping," advises Kelvin about Beaver Pond Campground. Several parks require use of provided bear boxes.

Accessibility options: Croton Point Park provides a mix of camping accommodations with varying accessibility. "They have cabins and RV sites and now that the Tapan Zee bridge work is done most of them are now open again as the bridge workers have moved out," explains Andrew A.

Variable site privacy: Campsite layout varies significantly between parks and within individual campgrounds. "The camping sites are very different so it's useful to go in person and select the area. Parking is close, but some of the sites are also pretty close to each other so there is less privacy," writes Susana M. about Ward Pound Ridge Reservation.

Tips for camping with families

Kid-friendly amenities: Several locations feature dedicated family facilities. At Croton Point Park, "It's a good park/camp for groups. They have cabins and RV sites... There is a model airplane air field and a decent playground for young kids."

Educational options: Camp Glen Gray offers structured experiences for children. "Great Camp!!! One rustic place with many hiking trails to choose from. Camp also provides trucking of gear weather permitting... Trading Post for treats and other items," notes Jose N.

Swimming safety: Designated swimming areas with lifeguards operate at multiple locations. "The new docks around the swimming area create a safer swimming experience for even the most inexperienced swimmers, allowing them safe and obvious perimeters," explains one reviewer about Lake Frederick.

Tips from RVers

Limited hookup options: Full-hookup RV sites remain scarce in the immediate Thiells area. One exception is Sebago Cabin Camp which offers electric options, though no water hookups. A reviewer notes: "Sebago has a huge lake and great beach area. It was perfect for lounging and swimming in during a hot summer day."

Size restrictions: Most campgrounds in the region have limited space for larger rigs. "This camp is run by AMC (The Appalachian Mountain Club), you don't have to be a member to use the facility but you get better rates... No RV and campers allowed," explains Thomas M. about one Harriman State Park location.

Generator policies: Noise regulations affect generator use throughout the area. At Beaver Pond, generators are prohibited entirely, while some other locations allow limited daytime operation. "You can use your generator at certain hours," notes one camper about a nearby park.
