    Letchworth State Park Campground

    30+ years of great memories!

We have camped at Letchworth State Park for nearly 30 years. Recent updates to playground equipment and restroom/shower facilities have brought the amenities into the 21st century. The price is reasonable, and the park is a gem. A couple cons to consider: pets only allowed in three loops. Quite often, pet loop reservations are maxed quickly. There is a two dog limit, which excludes many campers. If you are used to private campgrounds, realize that services are limited here. Mediocre camp store and laundry; both get the job done, but leave a lot to be desired.

    Letchworth State Park, NY

Letchworth State Park is known as the Grand Canyon of the East and is located in Mt. Morris New York. My husband and I visited regularly when we lived near Rochester, NY. The park is stunning and is fit for camping whether you’re in a tent, RV or choosing to rent a gorgeous cabin. There are many walking and hiking trails for adventurers of all types. Make sure you bring your camera as the views are all photo worthy. The camping price is right due to the fact that the park is run by the state. A great place to stay especially in the Summer!!

    Shamrock Pines Campground

    Clean and friendly

Called up on Friday afternoon of Labor Day weekend and they accommodated us for two nights.  John and his staff were friendly and welcoming.  Very clean campground with mostly seasonal sites.  Several overnight sites with electric and water.  These sites were mostly gravel and cut into a bank so that there is some separation.  Surrounded by trees but grounds are well kept.  Fully fenced dog park that was great for our pup.  A couple of ponds for kids to fish and what looks like a nice pool.  Quiet hours observed.  On Saturday night there was a band in an outdoor stage that was great.

Close enough to Ellicottville to enjoy the shops, brewery and restaurants there.

Only thing I would mention is the dump station is simply just a pipe off one of the driveways with a water hose.  Not a problem and it works, just not typical of dump stations.

    Letchworth State Park Campground

    Good weekend campsite

Not technically in the Finger Lakes but still one of the most beautiful parts of Western New York State. Splurge and eat at the Glen Iris Inn! Great for cycling and hiking but no swimming. I love taking visitors here in all seasons but in autumn it is exceptional. I’ve stayed in a few tent sites and all are wooded and pretty private with your standard basic amenities. This is a popular park so make reservations.

The Grand Canyon of the East!

I went to college right near Letchworth State Park so I spent many wonderful weekends there! There is a reason why they call it the Grand Canyon of the East. Not only can you check out the beautiful waterfalls, but there are also many awesome trails, rivers, and caves to check out. When I would camp, we would rent a camp site with our tent but, you could camp with your RV or even rent a cabin. Ive gone every month of the year, but these pictures were from my birthday in January. Letchworth is one of the best parks in New York state and a definite must see!

    Letchworth State Park Campground

    Letchworth State Park

My son and I have a new favorite campground.  We absolutely fell in love with this park.  I find it odd that even though I grew up only an hour away, we never camped there.  Big mistake!  There are many trails to hike on and beautiful views of the gorge and river.  You have to drive to many of the places but it's worth it.  There are many souvenir and snack stands as well as a pool (again, you have to drive to them).  The camp store is small but well stocked with a laundry attached. Some loops allow pets and others don't.  If you want to bring your pet, please check to make sure you reserve a pet-friendly loop. Unfortunately for us, it rained the entire time we were there so we never got to walk the trails or use the pool.  Keep an eye out for other activities.  There are balloon rides, craft shows, etc. that happen throughout the summer. With so much to do in the park, you don't really need to leave but nearby is the Arcade and Attica Railroad.  It's a nice little ride through the countryside.  There is also a small dam that you can visit (we missed out this last time).  I highly recommend visiting.

    Nice and quiet

ntmnet. Overall, this is a nice place to go camping. We camp in a tent and our site was wonderful (PT1). We were pretty much alone. The facility was nice and kept up. The bathrooms were clean and well stocked. My only complaint would be that the pet rules are not enforced. I would see five dogs from my site and only one was on a leash all the time. My dog. One dog was free to roam wherever it wanted. Owners would walk with him and let him go. He came to our site several times. We did our best to keep our dog quiet but it was difficult. The dog ended up taking "a dump" on our site. The owners had not intention of cleaning it up till I talked to them when they walked by. They sent a child who didn't clean it toroughly so I had to. Called the office but no answer. Never saw an employee making rounds checking things out. Not going back.

Guide to Lancaster

Lancaster area campgrounds offer seasonal camping from May through October in New York's Lake Erie region. With elevations around 700 feet above sea level and average summer temperatures in the mid-70s, camping conditions remain moderate throughout the season. Fall campers experience cooler nights with temperatures dropping into the 40s by late September.

What to do

Disc golf at Darien Lakes: The state park features a complete disc golf course among hiking trails and lakes. "There is a fairly new Frisbee golf course as well. This campground would be a good alternative to paying the high prices to stay at the theme park down the road," notes Jeremy H. from Darien Lakes State Park Campground.

Winter camping options: For off-season adventurers, the Conservation Trail provides lean-to shelters. "We did some winter camping here. We backpacked into the lean to along the Conservation Trail. It was in good condition and we had a large clearing for activities," reports Leah W., who experienced Darien Lakes during colder months.

Niagara Falls day trips: Campsites provide convenient bases for visiting the famous waterfalls. "About 30 minutes from Niagara Falls. Staff inside office were very friendly-gave many trail suggestions and good tips for navigating the city. Comes with state park parking pass to park free and access to town shuttle," shares evan from Four Mile Creek State Park Campground.

What campers like

Lake Ontario sunsets: The northern campgrounds offer impressive evening views. "The sunsets you'll catch on Lake Ontario are some of the best you'll see. You can't swim off the ledges, but this place is worth it," recommends Laura Nicole A. about Four Mile Creek State Park.

Family-friendly amenities: Many Lancaster area campgrounds focus on activities for children. "They have every amenity you could need and the grounds are pristine. Our favorites were the 3 pools and brand new playground. We have little kids and they were just as entertained as all the big kids," explains L.W. about HTR Niagara Campground.

Convenient concert access: Cherry Hill Campground provides shuttle service for Darien Lake events. "We have stayed at Cherry Hill a couple times, mostly for Darien Lake concerts. It's VERY convenient to get to the convert as the campground offers shuttles before the events," mentions Cory W. from Cherry Hill Campground.

What you should know

Dog friendly campgrounds near Lancaster require pets to remain leashed and most have designated exercise areas. "We were in a back in spot but tons of room on our site. All of the sites were roomy. Some are shady," reports Glynnis A. about HTR Niagara Campground.

Limited privacy at some sites: Many campgrounds prioritize accessibility over seclusion. "The site we had was secluded, spacious and perfect for us, farther up the loop it looked like music festival with zero privacy or tree coverage," observes Dakota B. about Darien Lake Campground.

Seasonal limitations: Most facilities close by late October. "We arrived late in the evening. I called at 6 saying that I'd be late but the days just kept piling up. When I arrived the lady was still friendly and asked about my drive and knowing how bad the weather was glad that I arrived safe," explains Jurie V. about arriving at Cherry Hill during the fall season.

Tips for camping with families

Hammock camping options: Several Lancaster pet-friendly campgrounds accommodate alternative sleeping arrangements. "Things I enjoyed about Cherry Hill Campground: The owners are awesome, approachable, and helpful. Many sites are separated by hedges, are drive-in sites yet still close to water, restrooms, and shower even a microwave," shares Dan H., who notes the availability of hammock camping.

Free theme park access: When staying at Six Flags Darien Lake Campground, admission is included. "This is a large campground. Walking distance to the theme park. Campground fees include admission to the theme park. The sites are very nice and well maintained," explains Mary H.

Organized activities: Many campgrounds schedule regular events for children. "Nice campground with 2 swimming pools, playgrounds, fishing ponds, jump pad. Friendly staff," reports Phyllis V. from Niagara Falls/Grand Island KOA Holiday.

Tips from RVers

Site selection strategies: Choose carefully for larger rigs. "We were in #18 which has a tree that made it difficult to get the awning out and our slide out felt intrusive on the neighbor but that's the way it goes," advises Snooz H. about navigating Cinderella Motel & Campsite.

Convenient access routes: Avoid downtown traffic when approaching area campgrounds. "Note: if you are coming in from the southern side, DO NOT GO THROUGH DOWNTOWN BUFFALO like we did! PAY THE TOLLS!" warns Mike H. about reaching Niagara Falls/Grand Island KOA Holiday.

Value considerations: Price points vary significantly between basic and premium sites. "KOA and Branches CGs are nicer but they are also triple the price which for us did not seem worth it. We were in a back in gravel site that backed up to the motel which may not seem that nice but the electric, water and sewer worked perfectly," shares Jeff C. about Cinderella Motel & Campsite.
