Camping options near Bennington, New Hampshire range from rustic state parks to developed camping resorts. The area sits in the Monadnock Region at elevations between 800-1,000 feet, creating cooler summer nights than nearby lowlands. Many campsites experience temperature drops of 15-20 degrees after sunset, making campfires practical even in summer months.
What to do
Hiking to Mount Monadnock: The Gilson Pond Area Campground provides direct trail access to Mount Monadnock, just 25 minutes from Bennington. "The White Dot Trail starts off flat, but that's very short-lived. The trail begins to climb steeply pretty early on. The second half of the trail is very steep with lots of rock scrambles," reports Tara S. at Gilson Pond Area Campground.
Fishing opportunities: Multiple ponds and lakes offer diverse fishing experiences. "We were right on the pond on site 69. There was a family with several smaller children who were fishing the pond. It was so cute to hear them squeal with glee when they caught a fish," notes David G. from Oxbow Campground.
Water activities: Kayaking and canoeing are popular at several nearby campgrounds. "We spent one night at Site 11. Our site was waterfront and shared a small beach/kayak launch with the neighboring site. Kayaking on May Pond and discovering little islands and coves was a highlight," shares Jessica N. about Pillsbury State Park Campground.
What campers like
Private campsites: Many campgrounds offer sites with good separation from neighbors. "Large park. Good sized sites with plenty of shade and decent privacy. Bathrooms are sufficient and there are enough to cover the wide expanse of the park," writes Ali B. about Greenfield State Park Campground.
Clean facilities: Well-maintained bathrooms and showers are frequently mentioned. "The bathhouses are probably the best maintained of any campground I've stayed at. They're cleaned multiple time a day," reports Daniel J. from Autumn Hills Campground.
Multiple swimming options: Several campgrounds feature pools and swimming areas. "So many amenities, you just couldn't get bored if you tried to. Beautiful, extremely clean bathrooms, reasonably priced little cafe, big camp store, very friendly staff, 4 outdoor pools & pretty big campground that has a gated entry/exit that needs a key card pass you get upon registering," says Sara D. about Cold Springs Camp Resort.
What you should know
Ticks are common: Be prepared for ticks, especially during spring and early summer. "We have only one con about the grounds, there were a ton of ticks on the edge of the site. Staff was friendly, pool was nice & sites were fairly spacious," warns Sara D. about Autumn Hills Campground.
Site size variations: Some campgrounds have tight sites while others are more spacious. "The sites were on the small side, but it worked just fine. We stayed at site 14 needed a very long sewer hose," explains Allura B. about her experience at Autumn Hills Campground.
